Three mass shootings this year began with a hateful screed on 8chan. Its founder calls it a terrorist refuge in plain sight.

The El Paso shooting, some terrorism experts said, could ratchet up pressure on federal law enforcement and governmental authorities seeking to combat a site that calls itself "the darkest reaches of the Internet."

The site has survived, extremism experts said, in part due to a reluctance from some law-enforcement and intelligence officials to categorize white-supremacist and far-right movements as terrorism threats. The site has for years been shielded by U.S. laws that limit websites' legal liability for what their users post and has been further protected by an Internet infrastructure that makes it difficult to take sites down.

On first blush (and second and third), terminating service for 8chan seems like a smart move. The only possible concern is that it may scatter some of these scoundrels so that law enforcement has a harder time tracking them (and in theory a harder time preventing future terrorist plots).

But then again, scattering them will make it more harder for said scoundrels to coordinate their hate campaigns, spread their manifestos, radicalize each other and lionize their fellow murderers. So, it's probably still for the best to just shut down that horrible place. And man, what a horrible place it must be if it's where GamerGate and the outcasts from 4chan go...

I've forgiven THQ N about this a while ago (the company not the AMA guy)

Also I'm glad Cloud Flare won't be assisting 8chan

It's awfully telling that one of 8chan's biggest detractors is the site's damn founder. That he's one of the first to call out the place as a breeding ground for terrorists makes THQ's actions all the worse.

So that's like at least 71 people killed in 3 separate events this year by 8chan posters so far? THQN staying silent.

is there a list somewhere of products associated with this publisher? I don't wish to buy anything of theirs by accident in the future

also their parent company handles the distrubution of games from capcom, bethesda, microsoft, koei tecmo, sega and square enix in europe, so if you live in europe you might want to avoid physical copies of those as well.

Lame and I don't get the reasoning, especially given Geoff's history.

No the reasoning was correct. He probably had very little to do with organising the interview or had much idea about all the 8chan stuff (Especially this particular person being involved).

He was just doing his job and it's not right to attack him over it. That's coming from someone who isn't a Geoff fan.

I guess, I am however convinced that he wouldn't give a fuck if he was made aware of the fact that Reinhardt helped signal boost a site where neo-nazis and pedophiles gather.

I understood their reasoning but it was kinda like "everything is shit but lets not single out this one guy for it". Keighly could maybe have made a stand about promoting THQ stuff but he didn't and he won't most likely if given the chance.

Happy to see 8chan is at least temporarily down. Hopefully they find a way to permanently get it shut down, best way would be for everyone to deny them hosting services instead of some invasive new laws to get it shut down. I'm a little confused though, are we holding THQ responsible for things that have happened on 8chan since their AMA? Seems a little weird to me.

Considering there were basically no repercussions for anyone and it barely spent more than a day or two in the news cycle, I can see why people are still upset.

It would be hilarious if THQ Nordic's terrible pr move actually ended up being the beginning of the end for 8chan, and good riddance.

With 8ch and violent gaming being blamed for these shootings, how long (and in which alternate reality) until someone in the media or the government shows a THQ game as an example when talking about violent games?

Beyond that, it's my understanding that hate-based movements have a natural tendency to descend into infighting because they're being encouraged to hate anyone in the outgroup, so by undermining efforts to keep them connected and splintering them feeds that tendency.

As for how bad of a place 8chan is, it was explicitly created because 4chan's was too restrictive on the content it allowed. Since 4chan allowed illegal torrent download and tried containing its Nazi presence in /pol/ instead of banning them, the only big restrictive they had was child pornography. That's also something demands a network.

Yeah, I'm not gonna hold my breath for gamers to not be shit.
I mean, the main problem is not only on the gamer side but also on the media side. Media is supposed to act as a middle man that hold power on onto the production side, pushing them to be more honest and more truthful. In the end, the 8chan notice barely reached the mainstream gamer (and probably has been forgotten by now sadly).

However, I dont blame the media for that. The relation of power between gaming companies and media is clearly slated against the media, with the gaming companies being able to easily prohibit access to their goods (see Bethesda and Kotaku). The fact that even after months of asking for what has happened with the 8chan situation by Imran, THQN hasnt even made a statement saying they fired the PR guy is quite telling.

Never.

There are people correctly noting that 8chan are a factor in these shootings because of the open racism and white supremacist postings and because by its nature it is where the shit of the internet goes when it gets flushed, so it's populated with the kind of scum who encourage this line of thought and take pleasure at these shootings.

There's another completely different set of people windmilling about trying to find something to blame for the shootings to divert attention from the big flashing red arrows pointing their own heads. Those are the people blaming video games.

The people blaming 8chan are mostly okay with video games and aren't going to try to blame these shootings on THQ games.

The people blaming video games are mostly white supremacist dogshit people who are okay with 8chan.

It was surreal seeing the news go into detail about what 8chan is, but I'm glad they actually acknowledged it.

I would tend to agree with you if this was the only case but Geoff has a LONG history of promoting and signal boosting fucking awful people including Boogie, Dr Disrespect and others...

This is just the last one of a long trend... He doesn't get the benefit of the doubt anymore imo
