Three Canadian social media celebrities died Tuesday after they were swept over a 100-foot waterfall at Shannon Falls, near Squamish, British Columbia, the CBC reports. Two of the three, Ryker Gamble and Alexey Lyakh, who were two of the creators behind the popular travel YouTube channel High On Life, dove into the pool above the falls in an attempt to save Megan “Mindy” Scraper, Lyakh’s longtime partner, who’d slipped into the water. None survived. Scraper was 29, Lyakh was 30, and Gamble was 30.
Dang. RIP.

These are the falls

There is a waterfall in central New York I visit a lot and it feels like we've had a couple similar deaths with people walking out to the very edge where everything is slippery and might not be firmly in place and go for a selfie or something only to trip or slip and that's all it takes.

That's really sad RIP.

I expected it to be a story of idiots jumping in for the video highlights to get views or something like that.

Well two of them had been arrested for going into prohibited off-trail areas in Yellowstone, so you might say they have a history of doing reckless things for the likes/views.

I hope cautionary tales like this will encourage people to respect the power of nature so they can live the long, full lives they deserve.

Yeah left out of OP is that their channel specializes in doing stunts in exotic locales but it sounds like this was just an unfortunate situation and the loss of life is awful.

Didn't know anything about these guys...it's a real loss.

Positive outlook and just a yearning to travel and enjoy their youth. RIP

My wife and I were at the bottom of the falls when it happened. The falls are so tall and loud that we didn't hear anything. Only saw some emergency vehicles pulling up as we were leaving.

People shouldn't be playing around with dangerous environments like that. The current is really fast and you should be nowhere near it.

Sad to hear they didn't survive. We were watching for updates on this.

Damn props to them. I would stretch and reach my hand out but there’s no way I would go down the waterfall trying to rescue someone.

These guys have a sordid history of breaking regulations and doing risky things simply for social media brownie points. A good example of why chasing "influencer" status is a cancer.

Tragic end to an ultimately pointless pursuit of fleeting fame. You don't fuck with mother nature, she always wins, and you most definitely NEVER swim upstream of a waterfall.

If they had shown a minimum amount of training and respect for nature, they would still be here.

It's tragic, but you're right. They have a history of taking risks to get that perfect photo op. This time it caught up to them. This wasn't some random accident, it was completely avoidable.

Damn that waterfall is terrifying. Crazy that they jumped in after her. But I have to say, this may be a case of a desire for social media points gone too far.

Yeah, what the two guys did for their friend in their last moments was undoubtedly brave and noble, but this entire situation could have been completely avoided altogether which makes it all the more tragic.

As Spielberg put it back then, “No movie is worth dying for.” In this case, an Instagram post.

Wow, they gave their life’s trying to rescue the person that fell. I don’t think I would’ve been brave enough to do what they did.

RIP

Jesus. I’ve actually been to Shannon Falls before, and it’s the type of waterfall you take pictures of from afar, but do not approach under any circumstances.

Bloody hell. I've been here a few times and as others have said to be at the bottom is awe inspiring.

That said I really hope they weren't ignoring warnings. Nature is scary and unforgiving.

Have you not ever stepped on a wet/mossy rock?
Stepping on these types of rocks is extremely dangerous. I can only compare it to stepping on an oily tile.

I was in the woods with a pack full of gear and I had to cross a river. I got off a log, took a step and I was nearly swept off my feet and was almost submerged in the water. I would have been stopped by rocks on the way down to the river if I were to fall, but it was still a scary point and time.

Yeah, friend of mine slipped on wet mossy rocks and cracked his head one time.

Damn, that's terrifying and tragic. Really hope this was a freak accident and not something that was preventable and unnecessarily risky.

I was on a wedding shoot recently at the top of a mountain. I was a part of a crew shooting a music video of the wedding and there was a separate guy handling the actual wedding video. We got to the top/cliff and got our shots. Then, the wedding videographer asked the groom to twirl the bride and dip her right near the edge.

It was oddly tense and kinda fucked up. He wants to get this beautiful shot and also says "if y'all don't want to do it, then let's not do it" but that puts the bride and groom in an awkward position. They ended up getting the shot, no harm done, but it would have taken one misstep, trip, slip, etc. and that would be it. Not worth it to me.

I mean, it’s still kinda a freak accident, but was it preventable? Hell yeah. I think most people’s reaction to seeing this 100 foot monster in person is to stand back as far as possible, not directly above it.
