End credits rolling now and as I've said few times already, the game is great. The ending was bit lackluster admittedly. I was left wondering what happened to most of my party companions. Would have loved to have some info about them too, especially Rayla.

Edit: Oh yeah, that exclamation mark bug was driving me insane. I checked all my cards so many times that I don't have any new ones, started to craft them just to get rid of it. Nothing worked.

Exclamation mark is just when you have enough materials to craft an upgrade for your camp I think. If you have low wood/gold it won't show, but as soon as you hit say high gold+500-750wood or whatever the lowest thing you have you can build, it'll show.

Okay, so I'm in
The Swamps
now, but an "!" in the middle is prompting me like Chapter's End? How do I get to the other side of the map to finish up?

Edit: Ah, found out that it is a partial, you just can't go back afterwards. 7/7 it is!

Just got to Rivia. Disappointed with how they handled the Battle of the Bridge. I thought they would have had more scenes with Geralt, considering how much they feature him on the key art. I think that other Witcher, Ivo, had more dialogue.

At least they sort of nailed the part where Meve knights him after she got hit in the face and can't talk properly. Admittedly, it's funnier in the books.

In general, not a fan of Angren. It's where the lack of dev time when it comes to rebuilding the gameplay mechanics really shows. Mahakam was such a refresher, definitely the high point. Angren takes all that momentum and kills it. There's also far too many standard battles in there, which just aren't fun as they're way too easy.

Also, what happened to the scenes in this trailer. The ones with young Villem, the one with Meve in prison, and the one with Geralt. Highly doubt they were made just for the trailer. Cutting that scene with Geralt is really odd. In game, you never actually see what he does to earn being knighted.

Just started this! The world is really pretty and the images don't do it justice. Environment sounds and subtle movements really add a lot to the atmosphere.

I like how the text speed follows the speed that characters speak at (slowing and speeding up as necessary). Really nice way of doing it. Secondly, I like they have DS4 controller icons that got picked up automatically.
No way to hide the HUD tho, which is annoying.

One thing I must say is that music is really good so far, and the world is really relaxing. The voice acting is also really good!
It's the perfect game to just chill out. Loving it!

I wish they had kept all the introduction originally planned with Geralt who accompanied a baron (Falibor, I think), with a whole story to tell.

Same for Ivo, it makes a nice reference but nothing more. He would have deserved more scenes. Towards Riv, we feel that mechanics are becoming a problem, in addition to the ridiculous difficulty of the fight against Aep Dahy. What were they sincerely thinking? Managing the economy is also a problem: I finished the game with too much money, I wasn't even going to get the loot back.
Well, overall it's still a good game, a captivating story, etc., and it's well worth the price. Hopefully, the next titles will be more elaborate.

The story with Geralt, Falibor, Milaen and Torina wasn't part of Thronebreaker. It was going to be a 1-2 hour single player tutorial for Gwent, showing people what the Thronebreaker mechanics would be like (gathering an army, constructing a deck ect). Falibor wasn't a baron, he was a vassal to the Baron of Tridam, who had been betrayed and murdered. The little girl, Torina, he was escorting was likely the Baron's daughter. Milaen was their elven guide and a common poacher in the forest they were going through. Geralt comes to their aid after they get attacked by arachi.

There's a chance they finish it for a future update. They had most of it done by the look of it, but when they moved to the new gameplay systems with HC, it got cut as all resources were needed for TB and HC.

100% agree with the other things you mentioned. I'm really interested in how the game looked and played before HC forced them to redesign.

Played a little more and reached the point
where Nilfgard start their attack.

The puzzles are excellent! The starting set of cards are also very nice, as they give enough strategy to keep the players thinking during the start of the game. The rate of getting new cards is also great so far. The fact that Leaders can take multiple actions per match is a very nice change to Gwent (both gameplay wise and thematically). Simplifying to 2 rows also seems good.

The character movement isn't very responsive though. When you move the stick in a direction, then character will take a couple of steps in that direction and then stop a second later. CDPR needs to stop making the movement like this, and change it to be responsive so the character stops immediately when the stick is let go. No momentum based movement please. Still, it matters less in this game I guess.

Story-telling is great so far though! Really enjoying it!

Beat the game a few days ago. I hope they can use this format of game to tell more Witcher Tales.

For book readers, I have some questions about the ending of Act 4 where
Geralt joins the fray in the Battle of the Bridge

Mostly,
was is really that random? He seems simply thrust into the honor from Queen Meve. Was his desertion afterwards simply from indifference? Did Meve put out the bounty on him?

As a fan of the game trilogy, I could see that being a possibility, but see.

If this is all explained later in the game, you can just tell me that as well.

No, it's not explained. The fucked up the portrayal. It's one of the best scenes in Baptism of Fire. I don't know how they screwed it up so badly, considering how prominently they feature Geralt on the key art. You can check my post above, it seems they even made a cutscene for it that didn't make it into the game, but is in the trailer.
Off the top of my head, Meve's army captures a barge to sail her to the other side of the Yaruga, to escape the Nilfgaardians, because the Nilfs are trailing them from behind. (This wouldn't have worked anyway as the Nilfs were already waiting on the other side). Geralt's Hanse (Dandelion, Cahir, Milva, Regis) steal the barge, and take it to the other side of the river. They see the Nilfgaardians are there, so they come back to the side the Lyrians are on. The Lyrians want their barge back, and Nilfgaardians are shooting them with arrows. Milva kills their commander, which pisses them off even more. They sail back and forth, both armies literally chasing it, until Geralt goes YOLO, and says that they sail the barge into the bank by the bridge.

Milva, who is pregnant, miscarries, Regis helps her, and later Dandelion and Regis gets her to the left bank, away from the fighting. The Lyrians are fleeing the bridge, but if they flee, the Nilfgaardians will for sure kill everyone, including the Hanse. Milva obviously can't move, so Cahir tells Geralt that they can repel the Nilfs long enough to devise an escape. Cahir was an officer and knows how to calm terrified soldiers, so he and Geralt end up leading the Lyrian army to total victory, albeit a costly one, earning him and knighthood from Meve. Cahir is forced to fight his own countrymen, being a Nilfgaardian himself, earning him more respect from Geralt (although in his own words, as he says repeatedly, "I am no Nilfgaardian"). The battle ends for Geralt when he gets hit by a mace in his back and is unconscious. He wakes up in the medic tent. Confused, he didn't even know who he was fighting for. The surgeon tells him everything that happened.

Geralt, although actually from Kaedwen, had been calling himself Geralt of Rivia for years. He says that it makes his clients more trustworthy of him. He finds it absolutely hilarious that he's now officially "of Rivia".

At the start of the next book, Geralt and co desert because they have their own motivations, finding Ciri, not fighting someone else's war. Meve regrets knighting him, and later strips his title IIRC. In TW2, if you talk to Stennis, he says that Mve curses Geralt's name everytime she hears later. In Blood and Wine, in the Tourney quest, Meve's son chastises Geralt for deserting the army.

How on earth the dev team screwed this up I'll never understand. Go read Baptism of Fire, The entire scene with the battle, with Meve and her broken teeth, it's absolutely hilarious and brilliant. It's one of the highlights. They didn't portray any of that in the game. It should have been one of the best parts in the game, instead it makes little sense and felt like they literally shoved Geralt in there for a quick, 4 lines worth of dialogue, cameo.

Wooooow, that sounds awesome! I really really need to read the books. As many gamers, I have a rough time sitting down with something, but this sounds so good and just the extra dose of Witcher I'd love experiencing. It seems like they really did botch the details. Obviously, even if they couldn't have touched on everything, the execution now has me rather disgruntled.

A shame. Thanks for the thorough rundown!

The books are cheap, you should read them. The first two are short story collections, which might help you if you struggle to sit down and read. Although I always find it funny when people say that, what are you doing when you play a game or watch a TV show? Sitting down and paying attention. :P

I've yet to find someone who likes the games but dislikes the books. Even if you do, the amount of references you'll understand from reading the books will greatly enhance your enjoyment of the games. Although you might be disappointed when you realise that TW3 is basically a rip off version of the novels, except everyone is 12 years older.

I like how the sound volume decreases as you move away from a person that is talking. It's a nice little touch.

Finally finished after about 35-36 hours. Man, that was a cool structure for a card game and a great way to get me back into Gwent. I didn't like how some of the overworld choices were drawn directly to new card pieces, without alternative methods to get them (therefore affecting my choices), but I had a good time.
I really like how my Meve turned out over the choices. I made soldiers angry many times with my mercy, but I learned to not pay them too much mind rather quickly.

I wonder how many potential partners I missed. Most notably (Full Game Spoilers)
Black Rayla, who I didn't care for anyways as she's a full-on racist. I don't want a piece of shit like that in my army.
,
Gabor Zigrin, I liked until the final twist created perfectly to make me not like him anymore. I turned him in and he got hanged immediately. I wouldn't have done it personally, but he can't suddenly fall back from his "Appeal to the Elder" shtick after that whole map. Sad to have him go like that.
and
the man in the swamps that offered us food. I never accept terms that aren't laid out, so his "Rules of Hospitality" made him a No-Go as far as I was concerned
.

While I've had enough Gwent for a good long bit, I'm looking forward to the next Witcher Tales! Honestly, I'm curious if that universe has a more "epic" tale than this one in stow.

Finished, overall I'd say it was kinda meh. Big downside was how incredibly easy it was even on the highest difficulty. The puzzles were fine, although as the game went on, they became dumber and dumber(with some where you'd just have to play your hand to win, weird stuff) as it seems like the lategame didn't have nearly as much polish, and on top of that most encounters in the last 2 acts were just standard fights.

And standard fights were terrible, the only fight I lost was the last big story fight because of the overpowered power of the enemy hero and some bad draws, lost once then beat it. The entire game I only crafted 2 cards, 2 drummers. I just played with the cards I got by default and it was still super easy. There was little strategy, mostly just draw and play out my whole deck of 25cards over the 2 rounds while doing a lot of damage to everything. The last 2 acts were a slog as a result because of how boring and how common the standard battles were in there.

There was little incentive to build a deck or tweak it as the default cards were good anyway and in fact a lot of the additional cards I unlocked felt worse than the basic stuff.

There's quite a few bugs, a bunch of cards especially would randomly break at times, weakening the deck a lot. Specifically the Strengthen mechanic seemed to not work if you discarded one of the card during the drawing phase, or sometimes it'd only work when the card was played but not from hand(when it's supposed to). The dog also seemed to be broken for half of the game, or maybe some items can't be eaten not sure. Once in a while a card I'd play would display as something else on the board entirely.

The story and art were good however, so it was still ok overall, but if it had been a full price game I'd be pretty disapointed. It's alright for a 30bucks game I guess.

Fuck CDP. Seriously, fuck them. "Exclusive to GOG." The Steam version costs R175. The GOG version cost me R480 because there's no regional pricing, and our randelas are worth nothing to the dollar at the moment.

Really enjoying my deck right now. Got great destructive power with a couple of machines (ones that deal 2 dmg to anything that comes on that row) that I put in range row, then I put fire on that row and use Meve to send anything in the melee row to the range row. With a couple of those Nilf soldiers that deal 2 dmg every time Meve takes action, it gives even more fire power. All this while those Loyal units keep getting buffed. And if I ever need points, that mega combo of Rayla + Xavier + Decoy + Reynard can pretty much pull your whole deck out, lol. And of course there is always that Knickers gaining high numbers randomly, and the Alchemist to buff up other units.

Also, I'm loving meeting new characters. Knickers was a charming surprise, and Isbel is a really cool design. Love the tough Rayla too. I also like how we get to talk to the characters in the tent which helps develop them more.

I'm really having a great time with this. I honestly didn't expect I'd like a single player Gwent game this much. Devs have done an excellent job!

P.S. - Love the animations!

Just too bad that you don't need to bother with your deck, even on the highest difficulty, because every fight is so easy.

I would suggest people to play on the easiest difficulty and just skip all the regular fights until they fix the balancing tbh.

If they do another Witcher Tales, I do hope they address some of the problems. I don't expect next month's patch to change much, probably just twisting the number dials here and there, so it'll probably be the next game for any big changes.

Some problems I have/changes I would to see:
- Less standard battles if they aren't going to offering an interesting objective or event or difficulty. The puzzles are generally always fun and interesting (imo), but the standard battles just get monotonous
- Make optional objectives in battles be worth doing, either for story reasons or just for some rewards. Like beating Lippy or Vreemde in the first map, if you do the optional objective it changes nothing, it's the same as if you win normally.
- The minor decisions/events that crop up all over the maps should no longer tell you the reward/cost before you make it. "Lose this/these and gain this" or "Do nothing" is the current set up, which trivializes any decision making there is. The story choices are good though, they don't tell you what those choices will affect which can make them tough to decide in the moment.
- Resources are too common, by the end you have so many and there is nothing to use them on (I think people wouldn't have as many if the aforementioned minor decisions didn't tell you the end result first too)
- Should feel like there is more consequences or risk to battles. Having Reynard tell Meve that Nilfgaard outnumbers them on massive scale and losses will be huge is just ridiculous when you always win hundreds of points ahead and losing doesn't cost you anything anyway
- More reasons to tweak or change your deck. This ties into overall difficulty, but it can also be anything from losing bronze units and having to recruit them again (making resources more important) or having more enemy cards that outright nullify certain strategies/abilities
- Maybe not everything can be unlocked in the camp upgrade tree at the same time. Like you have to decide to take the camp and its training/recruitment in one direction, you can't go in another at the same time.
- Limit some of the powerful card's effects on the harder difficulty. Cards like Isbel and Eyck often get hundreds of points alone respectively, give them a cap or something.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the game and I think it has a good base for future Tales. There's just a lot of things I think they could improve on.

P.S. - Love the animations!

I don't know if you play Gwent, but one of the best things about it is the premium cards.

Some of them have easter eggs if you watch them long enough too. Like Reinforcements premium, eventually a big green Hulk guy will march past among the soldiers. Or if you let Priscilla dance about for a while, she'll go all party rocker with disco lighting. And Birna Bran gets hit in the face with a newspaper after a few minutes!

Yeah, I definitely agree with most of these. Overworld choices were trivialized by showing the cost/benefit openly (some tied directly to the free multiplayer Gwent goodies, meaning you effectively had to choose them to receive these). Some of the cards were certainly bugged for me, so the polish in that department could have done better.

I honestly got more tired of Puzzles due to the sheer amount (while this was my fault as I decided to complete them all, as they're fairly optional) over standard battles, but once you tackle the last two real maps I did find it cumbersome to do two rounds over-and-over again. The reason they used Shortened battles at the start could go double for those that reach the latter portion of the game, it saves time and makes battles, for me anyhow, more fun to accomplish back-to-back.

Encouraged deck swapping I'm more open with for higher difficulties. As a Normal player, I was happy with not having to swap decks a lot. Plus when I did have to, it meant more when I did. I certainly understand that the game is not very difficult (even on Hard from what I'm hearing).

Now I wish I insisted Eyck! I didn't know he was broken. I respected the man's initial wishes and let him be on his way.

Like you, while having enjoyed it, I hope it's simply a base from which to build upon with Witcher Tales as it certainly has multiple spaces to improve.

I guess I like the puzzles because the rules were always changing, which keeps you on your toes while playing. The regular battles just felt like they played out almost the same way every time.

You are right though, some of these changes should be reserved for a higher difficulty level or mode. That way they can keep the audience wider, so those who don't want to micro-manage their deck every two minutes don't have to.

Eyck isn't broken in the same way as Isbel is, but he very easily strengthens to a high amount, especially if you are using the Manticore Trophy. And if you are facing Monsters his value doubles (in theory - generally opponent never plays anything high enough for his value to be double), because he gets an extra effect where he damages an enemy by his power when played.

I replayed Thronebreaker over the last week and the highest I had him get to was 171. Extreme occurence, but him getting to 70-90 wasn't uncommon.

I should mention that shortened battles are the way to go. The standard battles take too long and just slow down the whole pacing. Good thing that there haven't been many standard battles so far. Also agree with seeing what choices will increase/decrease your squad's morale is not a good idea and they should have left them hidden.

The difficulty doesn't bother me coz I love breaking games and feeling overpowered in RPGs. It keeps the game moving. I can imagine if people had to restart the battles a lot (esp standard battles), it could annoy them to consider dropping the game.

Wow, that's really cool that there are these neat easter eggs! And yeah, I played Gwent when it initially launched and was still in closed beta. The animations then were pretty barebornes and basic. They're really turned it around.

Edit: I also missed Eyck, damn it! That card would fit so well in my deck! Is there a way to get him again? =/

The Stussining
Picked this game up on Steam even though the Autumn sale is happening haha. Really like Gwent and finding out how much this version has changed since the game in Witcher 3 is a rather fun activity. Curious how deck building works though. As I can't figure out how to get more cards.

As I can't figure out how to get more cards.

You can craft new cards by right clicking on the card, there's a "craft" button at the bottom. You get the option to craft additional new cards by upgrading your workshop.

I love the game to bits, the story and artwork alone is amazing.

Unlocked for me, it's on version 1.0.1
It's constantly crashing on my PS4 Pro, it's unplayable at the moment. I hope they address the issue as soon as possible.

So, with all versions released, and crashing aside, any reason to choose console versions over PC or vice-versa? Can't seem to find any console specific reviews.

Just started playing this and it seems ok. I am not a card guy by any means and so far I've been having an ok time.

I've had to skip some of the puzzle battles but moving along the main quest beat has been fun. I'm interested to see where it goes.

I kindaaaa want to play main gwent after this. Not sure. I never touched it on three outside of one game.

Picked this up on Steam recently. Anyone encounter an issue where the game is stuck forever loading on the first loading screen after you start a new game?

Edit: nvm, a restart fixed it

This game is really captivating and the story is surprisingly enticing. I am really digging it so far.

Is there any way to disable the UI or HUD to take screenshots? Like the press of a button or a command or something?

What a great game, truly one of the best of 2018
