Tim Sweeney: Android is a fake open system, and iOS is worse

Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, called on the game industry to be more open and liberate it from the monopolistic practices of platform owners

Epic Games Boss Says All Politics Should Be Removed From Game Companies [Update] - IGN

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has argued to keep politics out of gaming altogether and keep game companies "neutral" avenues where developers can sell games.

"The world is really screwed up right now. Right now our political orientations determine which fast-food chicken restaurant you go to [alluding to Chik Fil-A's political affiliations and the cultural response to it]? And that's really dumb," said Sweeney. "There's no reason to drag divisive topics like that into gaming at all."

Thats also the same guy, that, after Alex Jones was banned from Twitter, that companies should not decide such things (something like that).

Yeah....no.

What an awful take in general but especially considering the politics inherent in the lore/premise of the games that Epic has made in the past.

His talk started out great with this

And then somehow he fucking turned the car around and drove it off the fucking planet by saying game companies should divorce from politics.

Holy. Fucking. Lord.

My favourite parts:

He's positioned himself as a champion of "gamer rights and freedoms".

He's said it's critical the industry moves away from "adversarial models.

"[we need to] give up our attempts to create our own private wall guarden or private monopoly".

Etc.

He's right on the inherent restrictions on the mobile device front but hearing dudes with billions of dollars say it's not appropriate to get political are pretty transparent in that it's all just to protect their self-interest.

His earlier statement about lootboxes is right, but his statement about politics is such nonsense (that's a political statement in itself).

Honestly, I may dislike the man, but he got a fair point. I wish we could go back to that time last generation of apolitical games which weren't bringing bs political topics such as BioShock or Metal Gear Solid.

Games should be no more divorced from Politics than books or movies.

I get it, making political statements can negatively affect a companies standing and financials. It's smart for a lot of developers to avoid politics, but inaction says just as much sometimes. Remaining quiet, such as the case with Blizzard, can mean you are enabling and supporting severe oppression, such as with Hong Kong. There are times when people need to be Brave and speak out. It can be irresponsible to be in the position to make a difference, make a statement, but instead bury your head in the sand.

When Twitter rants start bleeding into your actual public statements it's time to get off the internet for a while.

Thank you rich white man for telling us how it should be.

Is it wrong that this just feels like a blatant attempt to pander to the most toxic areas of the gaming community?

Ok, Android is a fake open system, and iOS is worse?

Lmao.

...I never knew iOS was supposed to be an open system.....learn something new every day? lol

And divorcing from politics? Yeah let's see how that works out. That alone would stifle story telling.
