Overview

About:

"TINY METAL is a turn-based strategy game. The player builds up his force consisting of several units and completes the mission on isometric grids. Each unit has it's own speed which determines the order of movement. The game ends when the player meets their primary objective criteria like "destroy all opposing forces" or "capture enemy headquarters" or fails when the player has no means to complete his/her objective i.e. All of his/her forces had been destroyed." -
Kickstarter Description

Story:

"The tenuous peace between the two nations of Artemisia and Zipang is suddenly brought to a head when the Artemisian king and his escort go missing after his transport mysteriously explodes.

ae4fde41f8ffc273dec418ea12e8d08d_original.jpg

Among the presumed dead is Col. Luja Lindberg, mentor to Lt. Nathan Gries. Nathan, a young but fierce and patriotic officer, is shocked and saddened with the loss of his commander and father-figure and patiently awaits orders for mobilization.

Given their long history of conflict, Artemisia wastes no time in deploying Nathan and his small strike force to launch a counter-offensive against Zipang.

En route to his objective, Nathan receives orders to coordinate efforts with the mercurial White Fangs, led by the infamously cold hearted yet beautiful, Wolfram.

As Nathan and Wolfram's forces make their way deeper into enemy territory, Zipang's defenses fall easily under the combined assault of Artemisian forces and the White Fangs.

ba6a1cc61789ed96945d849f0f9000f6_original.jpg

Lord Commander Tsukumo of the Zipang forces contemplates courses of action knowing that while his forces vastly outnumber the Artemisian strike-force he must be wary of their skill and not hastily expose any weaknesses. His experience has taught him that not everything is as it first seems... He also must navigate the politics of the other Zipang warlords."

Characters:

zHTAH9b.png

- Nathan Gries
Lieutenant Nathan Gries hails from a family of military lineage. His father died in last war when Nathan was still young. Col. Lindberg was a friend of Nathan's father and came to offer guidance to Nathan.

Nathan is well regarded by his superiors and peers alike with a promising future and noble intentions... Although Nathan is a model officer, his lack of experience may lead to situations where he could be exploited.

CcFpe3M.png

- Wolfram
Commander Wolfram, a fierce, strategic, independent, business minded soldier, and leader of the White Fangs. She lost her brother in the previous Artemisia/Zipang war. He fought, foolishly, for a nation that cared little for him. Which is irrelevant. He died believing he was fighting for a greater cause. She vowed never to make the same mistake.

Wolfram will take any job that is profitable but one never knows what she might have up her sleeve...

JOCA2Zy.png

- Isoroku Tsukumo
Lord Isoroku Tsukumo ("of 3 million stones"), the leading vassal of the Zipang shogunate. His title is a measure of his greatness, how much he owns, and how many people he supports with his rule.

Tsukumo has an extreme obligation to duty and honor. He takes care of his people first and foremost but is always strict and lawful, especially to himself.

M13qPnD.png

- Dante Carver
He is fast friends with Nathan from back in their time in the Academy, and like him he is filled with strong beliefs and a sense of justice, that is able to transpire over the differences in their and rank.

He is not only respected by his superiors and contemporaries, but also those who serve under him-who know him as a man who is worth of their trust.

He is a genius in command of a Metal unit, and his skill is renowned not only within the borders of Artemisia, but far and wide in other countries.

h7TTyWH.png

- Luja Lindberg
The Hero of the Battle of Zeltzer winning victory from a battle that deemed a lost cause by all. However Lindberg paid a terrible price for his victory with the loss of wife and children at the battle's end.

Being a war comrade of Nathan's father, Luja would upon Nathan as his own son when he succeeded his father as a soldier in the Artemisian military.

He vanished mysteriously and his current whereabouts are unknown.

cwnXSLp.png

- The Arms Dealer Orzio
An arms dealer that provides not only weapons, but all manners of military support.

He roves from country to country, negotiating with various leaders to stoke the flames of war for his own profit. As such, though he has a peerless military record he has made many enemies along the way.

M95YQh7.png

- Tatara

Tatara of the 1 million stones is a great vassal of Zipang Shogunate . It is with great pride that he has supported the office of the Shogun, and he feels that his rival Tsukumo is a great thorn in his side due to him having the full trust of the Shogun.

Tatara is obsessed with power, and will use whatever means necessary to increase his sphere of influence.

Wait, Sony published a game on Switch?!
- It's true. UNTIES is an initiative from Sony Music Entertainment, to publish "unique and innovative titles" on Switch, PS4, and PC "in order to penetrate the ever-expanding video game market with indie games." (Article.)

Who is Area 35?
- They call themselves grizzled and experienced Japanese developers but ehhhh... Some key staff include: Hiroaki Yura, Hiroki Kikuta, Hiro Inaba, Mutsumi Oda, and Tomoki Miyoshi.

Yoko Taro Endorsed this?
- Sort of.

First OT, bear with me. Helpful feedback welcome. Noticed a few people were asking about an OT for this but none ever volunteered, figured this would be good practice. Enjoy all. :)

I've been really looking forward to buying this game on the Switch.

Just two questions though, how is it? I mean, I've heard great things but I'd like to know your opinion. Also, why is the ps4 version almost half the size of the Switch and PC in terms of download?

EDIT: OH, great job on the OT btw, for your first time it's great.

Sadly I can't say just yet. I wasn't able to buy it until Yesterday since I'm saving the Yen on my JP-PSN account for a pre-order. Last night I was drunk and playing R6 Siege, Tonight I was making this OT. Hopefully I can play more than 5 minutes soon!

Users like Robin Phife Dawg ryushe Strings zenspider and many more have had the chance to play some hours. General impressions seemed that it does scratch the Advance Wars itch, but lacks polish you'd expect from a true AW. The difference between a full-on first party effort and an indie trying to imitate. Personally my expectations are quite low, my natural reaction to Kickstarter games these days, but I do hope it makes me miss AW a little less?

As for the size difference, I honestly have no clue. I pulled the sizes from their respective store/db pages.

I really, really enjoy this game. It's biggest flaw IMO is it is not AW, but the actual gameplay and tactics are tight, and it does enough different to warrant a go for any AW fan. First, fog of war is always on. I didn't love FoW in AW, but here it is an essential part and really affects your strategy. Secondly, there is a lock-on/assault mode that let's you gang up on a unit. It is often enough to defeat most units, but even still, you can choose which of your units faces retaliation. You can also forgo initiative in a fight ("assault") and move an enemy unit back a space, if you survive the contact. Lastly, there are no, as far as I can tell, OP units like APCs and Neotanks. I know Days of Ruin rolled this back, but Tiny Metal goes even further.

Cons? The story is garbage and the dialogue before fights is way to long. Even OK moments are just way too long to retain impact. I will probably start skipping it soon.
Also - and this is an issue that pops up in Wars as well - maps with factories can be won by pure attrition - but the AI seems particularly bad at dealing with making units relevant to the situation.

Ten plus hours in, I'm really happy to have it on my Switch. I will be plugging away at it for a long time, at least until Wargroove.

Yeah. Honestly I can't really give it a recommendation, at least not on Switch. The gameplay is pretty on par with what you'd expect from an Advance Wars game but it's just kind of a big mess of issues that sound nit-picky, but at least to me just add up to bad experience, to name a few really quickly:

  • poor and irregular frame rate as well as a sluggish cursor
  • poor graphic fidelity (blurry models) as well as questionable graphical choices such as expended units not contrasting enough from active units, HP bars are a struggle to read and interpret quickly
  • text so small it's unreadable
  • all maps are fog of war (although I will say, it builds upon fog of war in a more entertaining way than Advance Wars, such as units specifically built to target enemies behind fog)
  • strange unfinished qualities such as a lack of transition between screens (things feel like they "blink" onto the screen, such as going from narrative to map)
It wouldn't surprise me if some or all of these issues are with the Switch port, but at least on Switch I'm less than impressed. For what it's worth a good friend of mine also picked up the Switch port and thinks I'm far too critical,. I'm usually pretty lenient on indie games, but IDK dudes. Hopefully Wargroove is more in tune with what I'm looking for.

XEI0Sn3.jpg

this illustrates the issue with information visibility pretty well imo. It's really difficult to read those health bars and takes longer than it should to understand which of those two units has more health.

This is a well put together OT though, great job!

Wow, this looks excellent.

Haven't played AW in donkeys and it's on PS4 to boot.

Sounds like there's some gossip around the game. I know you said not to discuss it but can you point me to where I can find out more?

Thanks for the impressions so far everyone. :)

It's too bad there aren't any PS4 players yet, I've downloaded the game now and still see it's Ver. 1.0 even on NA PSN, so now I am worried that it is still broken. Yikes. As I recall, Strings was playing the AUS-PSN version and was annoyed to the point of requesting a refund? :(

There is a link at the end of the 3rd OT rule to a Resetera thread which discusses embezzlement allegations. It's in a state of "he said, she said" though, just finger pointing and no proof on either side, I don't want this games OT to become a just another avenue of discussing that though.

i had little to no problems (played switch undocked)

- framerate doesnt concern me that much as this is a turnbased game and unlike fire emblem the unit animations were never that good to begin with in AW. the animations are pretty neat though. dont expect GBA Fireemblem level animations but its definately just as good as GBA/DS AW animations or even better.
- the graphics really look like AW HD which is a great thing for me. expended units will turn black and then get destroyed/fall down
- it can be small when you make units in the factory and want to read details and stuff.. other than that i had no problems
- as you pointed out fog of war is a gameplay mechanic an i think in this case its a very good one.
- this can happen when you for example finish a mission and suddenly you are back out in the overworld map... i didnt think it was a problem per se but can be a bit off putting.

EDIT: Ignore, didn't read OP rules. Apologies.

Honestly would be more interested in this if they perhaps gave me a code or something for this being a backer of Project Phoenix for god knows how long. Glad to know the money I put into that Kickstarter was put into another game that I'll have to pay for again.

Just got through the first three missions on PS4 and so far so good. Looks nice, no FPS drops that I can see but I am playing with boost mode on my Pro. That said I have noticed some oddities in the English TL... seems like the script could have used an extra pass by an editor. The story is told in a very Japanese kinda way lol, lots of talking, VN Segments, dropping in-universe terminology left and right.

The music is nice and fitting.

Wolfram's seiyuu is Mikako Komatsu, omg, I noticed right off the bat and she is damn good!

And so I've beat it. 13 Hours, with a few extra missions here and there. I didn't get all the intel/labs in the main story either.

To be blunt, I don't think this is worth $25. It doesn't feel like it anyway. There is a distinct lack of variety and so many of the missions start to feel all the same. Oh it's a shame. The game isn't bad by any means, I don't think so, and on PS4 Pro with "boost mode" on I didn't experience any technical faults or crashes. With the additional Skirmish mode having like 40+ missions, and the Multiplayer soon to come, there does seem to be a lot of content overall but I suppose it would really depend how much you end up liking this game.

It the closest we're gonna get to an Advance Wars until some other Kickstarter wannabe shows up or Nintendo decides to try again. This is a 6/10 for me. Good enough for me to see it through to the end, but I won't be coming back to it or pushing myself through NG+.

Does anyone have any tips for the last the last mission, m14? The difficulty was increased after the patch and I keep loosing. I'm able to destroy the megametal and both fortresses, but I still get overwhelmed by a large number of enemies.

Mhm, I've deleted it from my PS4 since last posting but from what I recall, after defeating the megametal I just sat around building my forces playing the long game lol. Attrition works quite well for many of the tougher spots in TM, at least from what I found. The best thing you can do is work on conquering buildings even if just one at a time. One less for the enemy = less resources for them. Also you should use the towers to summon Elite units strategically. They can be summoned to any square you have found. Hopefully you have been unlocking and ranking them up?

I didn't know they were upping the difficulty with patches though. That seems... not nice? Some of the missions were way too long as it is. :x

Honestly, i'd say this game is around a 7-7.5/10 game for me. It has enough content to get a few hours of enjoyment from me, but there are a few annoyances that prevent me from giving it a higher score.

Thanks for the tips. I finally beat it. I then replayed the mission with my own mega and it was really fun to wreak havoc and destruction. Overall I enjoyed the game a lot.
