Tip: Cut your fingernails when playing video games on any platforms

  • For PC players, your fingernails will click against the keys on the keyboard, especially gaming keyboards where the plastic will feel more sleek and rigid to handle smoothness and precise input feedback against the mechanisms underneath. It just sounds... awkwardly disturbing, and you can feel the weird sensation of your fingertips clicking against your keyboard keys.
  • For console players, be it Xbox, PS4, or Switch, if you press down on a button on the controller, your fingernails would click against the chassis of the controller.
  • Same as above, some of the times, when moving rapidly with the Joystick, your fingers will slip, and your fingernails will end up scratching against the rubber membrane coating. Despite it doesn't really harm anything, who knows if it will end up scratching off parts of the Joystick.

  • Of course, no one here would have problems with fingernails. Moderate cutting and trimming the fingernails is the ideal way to maintain healthy fingernails. But this is just me.
That is all.

That title is so confusing I thought you were trying to clip your nails WITH the controllers. Took half way through the op before I knew what you meant.

While I do cut my nails regularly I’ve never used that part of my finger for analog sticks.
It's the left corners of your thumb's fingernails. If left untrimmed, it gets sharper as it turns 60 degrees towards the tips and as it curve towards the fingertip's endpoint extremity. It's the corners that would make your fingernails feel a bit sharp.

This doesn't seem like a real life problem that needs to be discussed. I am sure many people play just fine with longer fingernails considering there are a large population of female gamers out there and I've seen plenty of men with longer than average nails.

Guys for many of us keeping our fingernails trimmed may be second nature but gaming has a culture of people so filthy that some conventions need to remind people to use deodorant and/or shower lest they're asked to leave. So whatever, trim those nails and shit!

No like I use the joint of the bottom side of my thumb. A remnant of the SNES days where the tip would be on the x and y button and the joint on a and b. Goes both ways for my hands. Definitely a factor for others to look out for for sure.

I haven’t cut my nails since 2009.

They get so long they just start to fall off by themselves.

Do you think the first humans cut their nails or even had the technology to do so?

No.

It’s unnatural.

Just like vaccines.

To correct you, this has nothing to do with nails, and more to do with original dualshock 4 having cheap rubber for sticks. Garbage production.

I've gone a few weeks without cutting nails and this is really a non issue unless you literally don't cut them at all.

This thread reminds me of a friend I had in middle school that refused to trim his nails because he wanted to be Inuyasha. Made me shudder when I had to pass papers back to him.

Having moderately long finger nails are needed for games like Severed. Helps with shaping the finger and applying pressure on the screen.

The parts of the stick you're showing as scratched and torn are parts that I'm usually pushing around with the very base of my thumb, not the nail. What the hell is going on

Big Pro Tip: Cut your nails in general. 99% of people don't wash under their nails so it becomes a hot bed for bacteria and infections. Just keep them short.
