I'm thinking mostly biopic, with the fantasy/dreamscape elements via flashbacks at key moments in the narrative.
The shot at 0:38 is fantastic. The implications and the parallel between his life during WW1 and the worlds he created... incredibly rendered. My gosh, it looks beautiful. Hoult is a great actor too.
The shot I reacted the strongest towards, too, but because I hate it so much.
This makes Tolkien look like a Battlefield 1 character.
Especially poignant considering Tolkien's fascination with The Kalevala and the influence it had on his work.
You reading it literally? It's obviously a visual flourish. I didn't play battlefield 1 so I'll take your word for it. I personally want more people to see this so I'll deal with stylized bits. It is a matter of taste.
Wonder if it's gonna go into his religion cause that influenced the books quite a bit as well.

I wasn't talking about the costume you can barely see, I was talking about the framing of the shot, making Tolkien look like a superhuman action hero about to face off with Doomsday. This is a Biopic. I'd expect the WW1 portion to look more like "They Shall Not Grow Old" and not like Batman V Superman or the cover art for "Badass Male Power Fantasy 235"
It's definitely going for more of a connection with the LOTR franchise.

That isn't a superhero, that's a person facing death on a battlefield. That's what people without superpowers do. When you recount your fleeting mortality, you don't remember the discussions at a table. Alright, I'm unsure how to respond because that post sounds a lot like you actually think that Battlefield 1 is what actual war looks/is like. Really do check out They Shall Not Grow Old, fittingly it's directed by Peter Jackson!

...2:05 and 2:15 look an awfully lot like what you're trying to describe isn't realistic. Flames, explosions, troops in the foreground. Furthermore, that's a restoration of real footage where cameramen where filming. This movie is depicting the traumatic elements witnessed by a soldier first hand through his subjective viewpoint. It's a movie about the author of some of the most grandiose fantasy written, affected by gruesome trench warfare he witnessed.
