Not too surprising I think. Happy seeing VIII as high as it is. III not being on there annoys me the most.

No XII in sight, as god intended.

(It should have at least been above XV though)

Breaking News: Current game with large, loud, very online fanbase wins online fan poll of favorite game... (not to disparage XIV just we know why it won)

I assume this is kept to original mainline titles only? So nothing like VII Remake, XIII-2, or Tactics?

In that case, here's mine (today, anyway, this shifts constantly)
1. VII
2. VI
3. VIII
4. XIV
5. X
6. XIII
7. IX
8. V
9. XV
10. XI

I legitimately like the whole series. I don't think there's been a "bad" mainline FF.

Those are my top 5 as well.

Honestly people get too obsessed with x being over y. They're all such different games it's shouldn't surprise anyone that other games resonate with different people more or less. The mainline games are all pretty amazing in their own way.

You'll still consistently see FFX outsell FFXII on sale on Switch. I think some people on Era like to think XII has become more popular than X now, but it really hasn't.

Yeah, and I remember that wave of people at the old place who said XII was going to take its place as the rightful top-popularity contender once Zodiac Age came out. No. It did well. There's no shame in how it performed. But that was never going to happen.

Zodiac Age did exactly what it needed to, which was remind people how great of a game it always was, as it wasn't quite what people expected on launch.

XIIIs redemption moment will come next…

X that high is weird for me.

The hype at the time was all from how good a new Final Fantasy would look on the PS2.
I clearly remember most people not putting it that high up the pedestal for gameplay, characters and story when it launched.

Well it was past my FF prime, so don't have the nostalgia as some people here.

The "Reception" section here tells an interesting story. 12 *does* top lists (as it should), but Japanese publications/media consistently rate it lower or not at all.

Japan has always swung hard for X almost immediately after it came out. Prior to XIV, I think it always swapped blows with VII for their favorite of the games when they've done the anniversary polls, so being in the top 3 really isn't that surprising when it had long been duking it out for the top spot for as long as it has.

I wish they could have acknowledged a famicom entry. 3 for instance was a turning point for FF in Japan. It finally managed to past 1 million copies sold and it cemented the IP as more than a DQ clone.
