I don't mind using low-tier units for longer since it feels reminiscent of historic Total War, but I imagine it's a bit of an issue with factions who initially rely on the "meat-shields + specialists" tactic if it's more difficult to get hold of the latter in the early game.

Gonna do a chaos playthrough with the Gates of Chaos mod, it sounds pretty fun to see chaos armies coming out of ruined settlements

And with this gonna go for a total raze playthrough.

Games Workshop just posted an update one their The Old World project and it's about Kislev:
www.warhammer-community.com

The Old World: Ice Guard of Kislev - Warhammer Community

Today, we’re returning to the Old World – specifically the northern kingdom of Kislev…
This makes it a lot more likely that Kislev will be a fully featured race in Warhammer 3.

I wonder if CA had an inside line on this, hence why they avoided doing anything specific for Kislev themselves. Or maybe they had asked GW before and they refused to authorise it yet for (then) unspecified reasons.

While I hope CA knew this we also know that CA's original plan was just 8th edition races + chaos dwarves. IMO they probably though kislev and tilea could be eventually revamped as they had considerable amount of unique stuff but, imo, it seems they were only to be added in game 3 DLC.
if i remember correctly tilea capital and kislev capital are the only non playable races with unique settlements. Both have unique cultures.

I have serious doubts that the game was ever suposed to be as large as it is right now. I mean wh2 ME campaign is bigger then any historical title by a lot. If i remember correctly attila has like around 190 settlements, wh1 had 140 and wh2 ME has around 320 settlements. IMO the plan was for wh trilogy to be slightly bigger than an historical title which would make sense for the current ME map. The thing is CA has completely gone off the rails and just keeps adding stuff. The wh2 ME old world has considerable more settlements than wh1!
I wouldn't be surprised if kislev territory changed quite a bit in wh3. After all we are missing one of the oblast regions. Alongside this I think adding throg or a GS faction near kislev would make for a much more interesting northern map. right now the northern map is kislev, skaven, dwarfs and a LOT of norsca.

My point is that i have considerable doubts that kislev and tilea were ever supposed to be made before wh3 came out. Unless wh3 flops i think the main question is if these races will be part of wh3 base game or will they be DLC?
With the inclusion of vampire coast I think its pretty clear that these 2 factions are going to be made as long as the game shows there is profit to be made.

We know the series was originally scoped to be much smaller, from the ol' Russian leaks back before/when the game launched. Game 1 was roughly as we saw, Game 2 had 3 core factions (no Skaven), and game 3 focused exclusively on the four Chaos gods' factions. Presumably there was the same idea of a 'combined campaign' for each game, but the success of 1 and now 2 has led to them dramatically widening their development roadmap.

In the original plan, there was no Norsca or Vampire Coast DLCs. Game 2 was sized more like an expansion pack (with 3 factions vs. Game 1's 5), and Game 3 was presumably a similar scope vs. 2. But now each game is equal, with the sequel actually dwarfing WH1 in terms of content, by a wiiiiiide margin, too.

They made all of these plans long ago, and I wouldn't read too much into what GW is doing with Warhammer Fantasy. They're operating on different timetables.

No matter what any leaks said, I don't believe for one second that CA planned to have game 3 to be only the chaos gods.
IMO it made some sense assuming:
  • WoC and beastman both would need a rework to co-operate with the DoC
  • the units of DoC require a LOT of work. In wh1 the most complex units were the aranarok spider/ varghulf. Most other units were humanoids. Beastmen don't have their most complex units. DoC units would heavily rely on monstrous units that require much more work to animate fluidly.
  • They can probably re-use a lot of marketing similar to attila with the moto "you protected the botht he old world and the new world, now plays its end! Command YOUR end times"
  • You couldn't play wh3 without having wh1. Until wh2 was near release CA was very coy on how each game would interact with each other.
Personaly i think it is a bad idea to just have 1 faction even if it has a lot of depth. IMO the major draw of warhammer is variety and that game/expansion would not have much variety.

I don't think the four Chaos factions will be four lords under one faction--they're gonna be four distinct factions vying for supremacy, united only by Archaeon.

I'd bet there's something more to them, though. Some kind of meta layer that no faction has had so far. I've thought for a long time it'll be some adaptation of the religion mechanic for Total Warhammer, twisted for the Ruinous Powers' needs.

The problem is that even 4 distinct chaos factions will still be about destrying stuff. while if CA sprikles a good faction there yo ucan play a "builder" faction so to speak.

So archeon is the Pope?

I'd like this a lot. You'd have Warriors as the principal faction, headed by Archaon, and then 4 other tribes focused in on each God, with a lot more access to Daemons. Again, i think confederation by conquest is the best way of going about it, with an overarching religion mechanic to make it possible for the Warriors to usually come out on top if the AI is left to its own devices, but also to provide the player with some interesting incentives for when they're up there as one of the 5 groups.

I'm playing Clan Eshin in ME for the first time and it's weird.
You start in this awkward map corner that shouldn't be a corner. There should be lands to the north and east. And you have the ocean nearby but with no ports so you can't even trade.
I think Eshin will be a lot more fun in WH3 once they can expand in multiple directions and fight Chaos Dwarfs and Ogre Kingdoms.

Ah well. Hard to be actually upset about any sort of delays right now. Hopefully they do get that AMA set up, those are always fun. I want to know what their impressions are on the beta feedback.

Finished Vampire Coast and started Helebron. Really liked the mechanics in Vampire since I could ignore the Vortex stuff and play how I wanted. Helebron is much more like the traditional Vortex game. Have either Skaven or Tomb Kings on deck after Helebron.

If you want to ignore the Vortex stuff again for your next game, definitely go with Tomb Kings.

Just finished Tomb Kings. It was short, but fun. May try Skaven next.

Also
Reddit AMA with CA DLC team.

I had forgotten how horrible reddit is/was to read

My takeaway is
  • 2 lord packs left (i wish there was more)
  • black arks AI is a WIP. they still haven't found the time to make the AI use them as they should.
  • still haven't found the time to update WE, beastmen and WoC
  • merwyrm and prince apophas were cut due to not being able to find a satisfying way to represent them in game
  • CA is looking for ways to get all LL in a faction that isn't a conf
  • CA wants to make progression slower so that it takes around 100-200 turns to unlock all end game toys
  • CA is looking to heavily commit to making each start/LL feeling different (and is no longer making LL that can enjoyed by all types of players)
  • They are mostly (all?) working from home (this brought a smile to my face, specially with UK being rather stubborn to implement quarantine measures)
  • Black pyramid was suposed to be a mobile flaoting city but couldn't be implemented in the current game engine (nagash unique feature for wh3?)
  • So i think Boris was confirmed.
  • Last but not least CA said that they understand our issues with the map and have learned their lesson... So does this mean that wh3 immortal empires will be ... everything from game 1 + game 2 + game 3? no map cuts... is that even possible?

TWW2 is free to play this weekend, and the entire series is on sale for the next week. Good time to check it out if for some reason you read the thread and don't have the game. Is it worth making a new thread for new news?

Looks like the FLC chart was updated, coming next is an Old World Update, a new Mount and a new Legendary Lord.

new mount -> i want troglodon but maybe it will be aranarok for goblins? Coven throne has been in data files for a long time now. Maybe its that?
Any hope we'll get Araby in Total War Warhammer 3?
The way CA has been going out of their way to say Araby is not planed makes me thing that either GW or CA don't feel making it would be profitable And/or there is a disagreement on how to make the faction for total war.

The way i see it I think it will depend on how much game 3 sells. If it sold as much as 3K I think Araby/cathay/obscure faction could be brought to the table assuming kislev and southern realms are already planned. After all with such big playerbase having just a couple of factions as DLC might be a missed oportunity. (I assume that most DLC buyers will buy new races first instead of lord packs).

Do note that i am new to the warhammer franchise so I am assuming that the only factions left are:
  • Confirmed -> DoC, chaos dwarves, ogre kingdoms
  • very likely -> Nagash, kislev, southern realms
Which would be just 2 DLC factions. I think if the game is successful they would try to add at least 1-2 more factions.

I think Araby and Cathay might run into similar issues, namely, you start running into some real-world appropriation concerns. Same reason the Dark Angles over in 40k aren't native american themed any more. Lizardmen and Tomb Kings were obviously getting grandfathered in (tho notably they're both hugely changed for Age of Sigmar), but as newly playable factions, I think that stuff stands in the way for Cathay and Araby.

Is it worth jumping into the basic TW2 version at this point with the sale or do you really need TW1 for it?

No base TW2 is still very good but you can only play the Eye of the Vortex campaign, which doesn't involve the map from WH1 at all. If you own WH1 it allows you to play Mortal Empires, which is a sandbox mode that combined both maps together in a squished manner. If you just want to dip your toe in, base WH2 is totally fine and you can play at least 2 or 3 full campaigns before deciding if you should pick up DLC or WH1

Yeah! As a standalone game, it's preferable vs. TWWH1. Better in every respect.

Afterwards, I'd recommend getting TWWH1 as the first 'DLC', because you'll get the Mortal Empires campaign and five new factions to play with in it. Every faction except the Greenskins has received serious TLC vs. their appearance in the first game, too.

I bought 1 and never played it, but for some reason I am totally hooked on 2. Have almost 200 hours into it already and playing through most factions and DLC. Crazy how I ignored the first and am addicted to the second.

I'd recommend VC. It's CA's best DLC faction, IMO, being both well designed and super imaginative.

I mean... vampire pirates. What can beat that?

I agree with that. Bought a bunch of DLC and vampire pirates was my favorite.

Starting Skaven Ikit Claw Vortex campaign. What's the deal with Under Empires? How do you know whether to capture a city or create an UE? Is there a ratio? I don't love the UE UI either because you can't use the builder plan, you need to click each building unit to see it, unlike regular buildings.

Stick Under Empires in directions where you don't plan on invading (like cities where you've got less than ideal climate). If you get the upgrades to keep it hidden and another to collect food, they can be useful for later food management. The real trick is to also get the building that removes line of sight but has a chance of expanding to adjacent cities. That way you can just let it propagate surely but slowly and get more and more food buildings as the game progresses. At a later point you can always install the Vermintide building if/when you want to go on the offensive. Those have been my UE strategies in the past.

So under-empires serves 3 purposes:
  • Allows you to expand your resources without directly acquiring cities (which might be bad because of food)
  • Allows for ambushing/destroyong key cities/strongholds without directly involving your army
  • Can give bonuses to tech, ambush, corruption ,etc.
Ideally you want to pick a hero or 2 that can create under empire cities and send them far from your location, specially to rich cities such as tyrion and malekith's capitals. Once you have a couple of under cities you should build the building that has 5% chance of expanding them. Slowly these UE cities will expand all over the map. the UE cities will allows you to boost your economy, food or bonuses to your faction. These heavily help in managing the food.

A side note you shouldn't build UE stuff in cities you plan to conquer as theya re destroyed when you take over the city.

To answer your question there is no ratio for the ammount of UC, the more there are the better. That said since yo ucan use them to "steal" income from other factions i'd prioritize doing them in rich cities. They have a building that generates 50% income from the city they are in. If the AI plays ok-ish lothern can easily reach 3000-4000 income per turn which would mean a 1500-2000 income for you. Being a sneak rat is very profitable.

Thanks. That's all helpful. It's similar to the Vampire Court, but sounds much deeper and necessary than it was for the Vampires.

First time playing. I started at Tyrion in the Eye of the Vortex Campaign. Currently at war with Allerielle (hey, she declared on one of my defensive allies) and just grabbed the Sword of Kaine from the Scourge of Kaine (probably going to regret doing that). I have have 2/3's of the inner island under my control and so far haven't really been tested (Buccaneer's gave me a scare, but they haven't landed any armies). Also dealing with annoying zombie pirates. Fun, fun game. Bought all the DLC during the sale.
