Today is the 20th November; the Trans Day of Remembrance.
It is a day where we remember the trans people reported murdered between last year until now. Where we reflect on the senseless violence that trans people face simply through existing. For obvious reasons this thread will have less fanfare and is a place of solemn reflection on those society has let down. The Trans Day of Remembrance came about off the back off the murder of Rita Hester - an African American trans woman:

In the past year there have been 350 reported murders of trans and gender-diverse people.
This is a 6% increase in reported murders since last year. You can view the 2019 thread here.

It is important to note that this number and the breakdown toward the bottom will be heavily underreported. From it not being included in police reports, to family members who denied the trans nature of their children and a myriad of other reasons the visibility around trans people who are murdered is heavily obscured. This is why it is vitally important to raise awareness around this so that we may recognise the true face of the violence against us, and so that those departed may rest in peace as who they truly are. If we cannot find a life here, the least that can be offered is that we're remembered for who we were not who we were made to be.

Traditionally the names of those trans people murdered since last year would be read out. In place and to suit this forum, I will manually list them below, by month, starting with October-November 2019. These might not be at consistent times but I will do my best to keep up to date alongside the day. Where you are able, please take time to pause on some and spare some thought for them. Give pause to the importance of rebuking transphobia wherever it is present. That it is something that should never be accepted, dismissed or diminished. Violence and discrimination against trans people has no place in modern society.
Please note that this list includes details of death. I have not censored the causes of death, as I believe it is important to face the reality behind each victim and the violence they faced. We must shine a light on, and show the reality of, the situation these trans people faced.

It is a day where we remember the trans people reported murdered between last year until now. Where we reflect on the senseless violence that trans people face simply through existing. For obvious reasons this thread will have less fanfare and is a place of solemn reflection on those society has let down. The Trans Day of Remembrance came about off the back off the murder of Rita Hester - an African American trans woman:

In the past year there have been 350 reported murders of trans and gender-diverse people.
This is a 6% increase in reported murders since last year. You can view the 2019 thread here.

It is important to note that this number and the breakdown toward the bottom will be heavily underreported. From it not being included in police reports, to family members who denied the trans nature of their children and a myriad of other reasons the visibility around trans people who are murdered is heavily obscured. This is why it is vitally important to raise awareness around this so that we may recognise the true face of the violence against us, and so that those departed may rest in peace as who they truly are. If we cannot find a life here, the least that can be offered is that we're remembered for who we were not who we were made to be.
This number brings to light some alarming facts too:
- 98% of those murdered globally were trans women or trans feminine people;
- 62% of murdered trans people whose occupation is known were sex workers;
- People of colour make up 79% of the 28 trans people murdered in the USA;
- 11 trans people murdered in Europe; 50% were migrants;
- 82% of all the murders registered happened in Central and South America; 43% in Brazil;
- 38% of the murders took place on the street and 22% in their own residence;
- The average age of those murdered is 31 years old; the youngest being 15 years old.

These might not be at consistent times but I will do my best to keep up to date alongside the day. Where you are able, please take time to pause on some and spare some thought for them. Give pause to the importance of rebuking transphobia wherever it is present. That it is something that should never be accepted, dismissed or diminished. Violence and discrimination against trans people has no place in modern society.
