Doesn't seem like there was anything actually new shown from Trials of Mana at Gamescom was there?

Maybe the voice acting actually? Though I will definitely be opting for either JP or off after watching these lol

My most anticipated upcoming JRPG. This is what I imagined Secret of Mana evolving into when I was a kid.

If only they would re-do SD1&2 in UE4 with these graphics.

Secret of mana had to die for us to get this.

I teared up at the announcement because the second I saw lip sync and Hawk walking through the town I instantly realized this was in a whole other league than the SoM remake. And then the Charlotte scene sold me 100%.

In the remake of SoM, the emotional scenes don't hit as hard as they should because everything is so cheap you can't get invested. And this isn't about having Ff7 tier production values, just *some* effort. The music is very strong it's doing a lot of the job and the remake couldn't even support it.
But that Charlotte scene, if you've played the game, you can see they're actually doing it right and it got me right in the feels.

I think the exciting aspect of this remake is that it has a chance to actually be better than the original.

By providing strong action rpg gameplay and classes with spells that actually work etc... while capitalizing on the strength of the original (including presentation), I think this could be fantastic.

Woah they went the extra mile.

Each class has a unique model and design.

Will the Collection of Mana ever have a PS4 release? Not port-begging by the way, I'm just genuinely curious as I prefer getting games on the PS4, but if it's not getting a port I'll gladly pick it up for Switch.

Collection of Mana has been released on the switch in Japan not terribly long after Switch launch, it was like 2 years later that it was released in the US. And I feel like I heard there was some cooperation with Nintendo on getting the Seiken Densetsu 3 rom that was used in the collection. Given this I wouldnt gamble on a ps4 release myself. Stranger things have happened though...

Yeah, physical release just dropped on my local store this week, so I was contemplating getting it. Thanks for the info!

I didn't even realize this was an SD3 remake from the title, this looks so cool! Loved playing as Riesz, her (sprite) outfits were to badass. Looking forward to seeing the Fenrir one.

Are they concept art accurate?

The changing hair colors were probably a sprite palette limitation on the SNES.
I don't think there were illustrations for those classes. The old promotional art for Kevin for example only included God Hand and Death Hand. The hair color changing was probably also to make the classes more visually distinctive since all the sprites had gigantic hair.

I suspect they had HACCAN make new designs for some of the classes since he's been doing illustrations for the Mana series remakes and did the redesigns of the Secret of Mana heroes.

This might be one of my most anticipated games next year. I've played through this game so many times.

I just hope they balance out the classes a bit because some class trees are useless.

There's actually official art from the 2nd tier classes

Here's Angela as a Grand Divina and Magus for example

I really hope they stay as faithful to the original in charcter design as they can. So far so good, though I think some costumes might be impractical from a rigging standpoint. I feel like someone's class outfit had like a whole dead animal as a coat or something.

This is what I was thinking of
Riesz_Fenrir_Knight.png

I'd be quite surprised if we see that in game. I'm not even sure what's going on there.

Man, I hope they dress up the ladies a little. I was hoping to play this game with my young girls, like how I got into Secret of Mana when I was young. The sprite art doesnt nearly give off the horndog vibes that that this official art and the remake itself has been giving off. Such a disappointment for me. Sucks to see the Mana series go this way (or have gone this way but was hidden due to Sprite limitations).

For the record, they are using original designs for the classes.

But they take some inspirations here and there. Angela's hat is from one of her old classes.

Hawk's doesn't match any.

If anything they used the ingame artwork of the classes over the drawings as inspiration, then made their own thing.

And Blregmeister, none of Angela's class ends up having pants, so may have to stick to a Liz and Charlotte + one dude party :p .

Also Liz doesn't have pants either but she looks like Tinkerbell so heh.

The sprite art was different. Riesz clearly wore armor for example.

Go the way that's it's been for the last like 26 years?

The Mana collection just came out and has multiplayer if that's you're concern. Or you can even get a fan-hack for Seiken Densetsu 3 that makes it 3 player instead of just 2. Playing through the game like that withy friend and his wife, before I moved, is one of the best gaming memories I have.

This far they have been showing a great deal if care in preserving the style of the original, aside from not having the unique sleep animations. Certainly moreso than the Secret of Mana mobile remake. I'd hate to see them screw it up by changing up costumes for no good reason, aside from technical limitation because I still don't know how they'd do that howling wolf cloak thing.

The sprite art in the original game is gorgeous! I cant wait to play this.
I'm currently playing through the Trials in the collection right now (with the physical release). I just wanted to state my concerns that I hope the remake doesnt go too horndog in its art after seeing that big tittied woman in the trailer yesterday (sorry, went down Kevin's path on this recent playthrough, I dont recall her name), and seeing the original official art of wolf pelt Rieze and Magus Angela. I would hope the game play down those aspects so I dont have to police my daughters decision of characters for our playthrough.

Overall I'm super pumped for the remake and I wonder if they go for a remake of Legend next or if Square is ready to bite on something original?

If they do remake Legend I wonder how it would go. Its among my favorite PS1 games because if its proto open worldness and unique storybook feel. There are a lot of great things that could be lost in a remake, even though it has a lot of aspects that could benefit from a rethink.

I think they could pull it off if they approached it right. Dawn of Mana was a mess as a game, but they pulled off the look in 3D really well.

Like I told you, the classes have new designs (the original just had recolors for the actual sprites) so you shouldn't worry too much on that front.
The new classes look similar to their default look just tweaked in several ways. Angela doesn't have the thong in the remake.

Belladonna is an egregious example.

But as for Liz and Angela, they'll just have the classic trope of tights and not covering arms / legs in most of their classes. But I wouldn't say it's horndog.

That's very weird because I actually can't stand the overly "sexy" designs in games and here they check all the marks and yet it doesn't bother me quite as much. The artstyle just makes it all look cutesy so I don't look at them like say, Cidney in FFXV.

They did alter her design a bit in the remake so that you don't see her butt with the 3d camera.

They said they want to make an original Mana title and that Trials was a first step since they basically needed to remake the whole gameplay and storyboard.

Sad that it does not have multiplayer, but I guess the behind back camera they went with hindered them from doing that.
They could have atleast tried adding online multiplayer but maybe their budget didn't permit them.
I guess they'll be able to fix some of the jank I felt while playing the gamescom demo (not that the old games weren't janky), I hope the Switch version gets some attention there especially.

Is anyone having control issues with Secret of Mana in the collection? For some reason my character randomly starts to move on its own. I downloaded a patch, but the issue persists.

I'm using a pro controller, and I made sure to calibrate it just in case but the same problem still happens.

The Trials remake looks so good (unfortunately-unaltered ridiculous female costume design notwithstanding) but boy howdy, that voicework is amateur hour. I almost never do this but I'm gonna switch to the Japanese audio.

The Japanese voice cast is thankfully good it seems. Here is the Japanese TGS trailer and credits:

Duran: Takuya Eguchi
Angela: Rumi Ōkubo
Kevin: Ryōta Ōsaka
Charlotte: Sumire Morohoshi
Hawkeye: Yūki Ono
Riesz: Mikako Komatsu
Fairy: Maaya Uchida
Koren/Crimson Wizard: Yuichi Nakamura
Deathjester/Goremand: Tomokazu Sugita
Isabella/Belladonna: Yoshino_Nanjō

Although, the worst part about JP would still be Charlotte too. Still, none of the ENG voice cast even sounded like they were putting any effort into it whatsoever. Whoever is directing them must be asleep.

Woah, I must be the only one thinking the Japanese voice cast sounds worse. I can't stand, like, any of the female voices except maaaaybe Belladonna.

Excited - this remake looks like the real deal. I'm such a sucker for games with good evolutionary class changes.

Played SD3 a lot back in the day, and waiting on this as opposed to getting collection (I beat FF Adventure multiple times on the GB and also have the mini SNES for SoM).

They sound okay to me apart from Charlotte, who has the typical ear drum-piercing overexcited voice they give to children in Japanese media.

Wonder if Kevin's forms will change with the class too, or it will be just a recolor under the new clothes.

Each class has its wolf form because it's using parts of the costume he's wearing.

I haven't heard of this, does the issue happen if you use a joycon ?

I really never use it, so I don't know. But it happens with the pro controller.

Can two controllers be active at the same time? Maybe I have joycon drift and the joycons hooked up to the console is causing it even though I'm not using them?

I saw another person on gamefaqs with the same issue, so I don't seem to be the only one.

Yeah, but I mean changes on the wolf form itself. More deranged face, more or less fur, bigger claws, etc

Most likely not since their appearance isn't changing.

That being said the last stage of the classes might offer enough of a visual chance for it though !

Well nobody has heard of that issue, so the only way we can help is by ruling out potential causes.

I suggested trying to use the joycon to see if the problem persists with it. To see if it's a game problem, a switch problem, a hardware problem.
