BERLIN — The Trump administration is launching a global campaign to end the criminalization of homosexuality in dozens of nations where it's still illegal to be gay, U.S. officials tell NBC News, a bid aimed in part at denouncing Iran over its human rights record.

U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, the highest-profile openly gay person in the Trump administration, is leading the effort, which kicks off Tuesday evening in Berlin. The U.S. embassy is flying in LGBT activists from across Europe for a strategy dinner to plan to push for decriminalization in places that still outlaw homosexuality — mostly concentrated in the Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean.

"It is concerning that, in the 21st century, some 70 countries continue to have laws that criminalize LGBTI status or conduct," said a U.S. official involved in organizing the event

Remember Trump 2016 with the LGBT flag? This is that but for 2020. His team is prepping the bullshit. He rallied in Florida yesterday against Maduro and to secure the Venezeulan/Cuban/anti-socialism vote in the state for 2020. Everything is about winning in 2020 now and non of it is for actual progress.

As always, this is a bullshit poor faith effort, designed as an end run to push additional sanctions against Iran.

About Trump's ambassador behind the project (from the article):

Grenell, as Trump's envoy to Germany, has been an outspoken Iran critic and has aggressively pressed European nations to abandon the 2015 nuclear deal and re-impose sanctions.

It's not that I oppose an effort to decriminalize homosexuality (and other LGBTQ+ status)- far from it. This is near the top of my wishlist for the world.

But when Trump uses these issues in bad faith, it sets these causes back and interferes with the good, legitimate work being done by other groups.

The end goal is to build public support against Iran so it's easier to go to war, not to protect LGBT people.

The right trying to present themselves as more gay friendly is fascinating to watch, but I mostly have seen it as a way to paint muslims as uncivilised homophobes, even if the christian right is just as bad. Like, white supremacy superceding their other shitty beliefs, as I said it's a fascinating play.

There is approximately a 50-60% chance Trump confused homosexuality with heterosexuality here.

There's a 99% chance Trump has no clue this is hapening.

It's the efforts of the US Ambasador to Germany; someone appointed by Trump but I don't see how this is "his administration" on anything more than a technicality without more information.

If it does come down from the top it's a PR move; one that conveniently shouldn't matter to their base as it doesn't change anything here in the states.

Bolton wants to invade Iran and it's an easier sell to the American public for Trump if he can try to sell the American people on this false notion that they are somehow lesser people because of the particular type of theocracy that they ascribe to, which is pretty much the same type of theocracy that would lead to banning transgender people in the military or allowing schools to decide whether or not they should be able to allow LGBTQ students. It's basically waving one hand over here saying "look at what these bad people are doing" while the other hand is stripping away rights and freedoms for the same people in their own country. It's exploitation of an already marginalized group to enforce their xenophobic beliefs. Anyone who thinks there is any kind of altruistic intent behind this is either as dumb as a Trump supporter or somehow even dumber.

EDIT: Notice how they say their attention will be "mostly concentrated in the Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean. "...and not say Russia where same-sex unions are still illegal...wonder why Russia would not be a target of this campaign...hmmmm.....

I mean, evangelicals don't want it to be criminalized.

They just want freedom to be as bigoted as they want to gay people.

The true test will be to see how they handle Saudi Arabia, ostensibly an ally.

But, my thought is this is all meaningless fluff, and won't actually do anything.

Trump: how can I hold that gay flag again?

Staffer: we could push to decriminalize homosexuality world wide.

Trump: done, I thought it was already anyways.
