You know op, I think it would be helpful if you included a blurb explaining what the fuck matsuricon or why it matters that it will coincide with trumps meeting

More than not it sounds like they're worried that Rally goers might causes issues confronting con goers. There's already enough issues that cons face with those one or two bible thumpers that always stand outside and criticize people walking by. Can't imagine a big crowd of them coming upon the con would be great news.
Reminds me of this story (bash.org is a blast from the past for me)
http://bash.org/?12431
<Hiroe> he was dressed as a big fuckin devil
<Hiroe> like, HUGE costume
<Hiroe> 8-foot lizard wings, giant horns on the head
<Hiroe> at some anime con in california
<Hiroe> they were double booked with a southern Baptist group in the same hotel
<Hiroe> he's riding the elevator down to the con space
<Hiroe> doors open, little old baptist woman standing there
<Hiroe> he just says "Going Down" in his best evil voice

Yeah, Matsuricon is a convention that happens at the same time every year since 2006, so they've had the dates locked down for well over a year now. Plus, in my experience, congoers for this convention tend to be very open and liberal.
Yeah I can only imagine with some of our local ones things would not go smoothly.. People at cons are usually pretty liberal / LGBT friendly.

There seems to be a recurring theme with right-wing / Republican / Conservative gatherings/conventions coinciding.

This was also a thing in Canada back in 2017 when the Progressive Conservatives met to elect their new leader in Toronto at the same venue and time as Anime North.

Was waiting for someone to post this.

Oh we are gonna see some cosplay protestors
we are abso-fucking-lutely going to see cosplay protestors, there's already another Big Gay Dance Party FB event being organized specifically inside the convention center (with the first one being thrown for that Pence visit a couple months back)

This is going to make a certain segment of the convention attendees really happy
eh. been going to this convention for 8 years, and if there's a segment of MAGAs in regular attendance it's extremely small

I am ready for photos of...

1. Anime cosplayers posing with Secret Service personel.
2. Pictures of Nazi Furs trying (and hopefully succeeding) in getting into the Trump thing.

"Tee hee let me go ahead and make my jokes about how anime fans are all conservatives as if Twitter trolls go to cons XD"

Y'all ain't funny, just ignorant. Congoers are an incredibly diverse, left leaning crowd. Are there some assholes who probably also are the type of anime fan who go on /pol/ and have smug anime avatars on Twitter? Absolutely. But the vast majority go to these cons as a way to be able to express themselves or commune with others who they normally don't get to. This does lend itself to racist weirdos feeling wanted, sure, but far, far more emboldens PoC, LGBTQ individuals, and women. That's not to say things are perfect but bigger cons like Matsuri here are VERY good at taking the side of marginalized victims of harassment that out of con would find no justice.

Otakon this past weekend had a similar occurence being a few blocks away from the DC unite the right rally. As a result the con sent out a strongly worded, no holds barred message of no tolerance towards the alt right, how Otakon is a celebration of multiculturalism and sharing culture, and of dedication to safety of it's diverse con attendees. Further, a number of panelists and guests had some very choice anti-Trump, anti-nazi quips they threw into their panels and presentations all weekend, to applause and positive laughter. A few congoers even went so far as to attend the counterprotest- and none to the protest itself.

That all said makes me worried about this situation. Though thankfully nothing happened at Otakon, that's because the rightists weren't actually in the con center.

A large group of Trump supporters being in the same building with as diverse a group as congoers is an absolute recipe for disaster. The con center are idiots for allowing the rally at the same time. I wouldn't blame Matsuri for postponing or cancelling the con, but that'd give those racist hick idiots just what they want. I hope everyone at the con stays safe and nothing happens.

I thought Trump and this event was an oddly fitting pairing since I initially read the title as Masturcon.

I look forward to all the white feminist con attendees (and by all, i mean everyone at that con) saying how we all need to hear the nazis out. And it's all just different political opinions.

I literally live 3 blocks from the Columbus Convention Center.

I like anime.

I hate Trump.

I think I'm going to protest my little anime heart out.

Glad to hear that Otakon stepped up. Dragoncon's been getting pretty shifty about some alt right shit the past few years and it's made those assholes a lot more loud and visible at that con.

Oh God, no. It's more than unfortunate to hear that's been the case. :(
Maybe it's just that the cons I go to are in a fairly liberal area so all the con staff are from around here are run by people who 'get it' and that inherently keeps more creeps away. Or maybe it's because Dragoncon is a more general pop culture con? Whatever the case that just runs contrary to my experience entirely these past few tumultuous years at cons.
But yeah, it was great to see Ota put that statement out.

Lol, I remember that from last year. It sucked because the folks going for the conservative event were taking up a lot of the parking space for Anime North! Also, for some reason a newscaster on the radio mistakened cosplayers as being part of some mass protest for the event, lol.
