In terms of polling, this feels sort of like the start of January where Trump tried to convince the country that he wasn't the cause of the government shutdown but the only people that believed him were the core of his base. Just like then, it feels like he's not convincing the people on the edges of the middle that he didn't do anything wrong.

I don't even know why he's scared. Dragging this along earns nothing more than gold stars for House Dems. They know they can't get a conviction in the Senate.

Trump, frankly, is in pretty decent shape unless Biden escapes as the Dem nominee.

Nothing direct, but you can just about guarantee the SC will see cases related to:
  • congress's power to investigate and demand for example, tax returns
  • executive priviledge and the power to ignore subpoenas, what happens when they ignore contempt charges
  • the ability to indict Trump and other key executives
Some of these fights have already begun in lower court.
Fair enough. But you know that ain't what he's talking about.

He's gotta go. Like really really has to go. The man is incompetent and corrupt and we've let him and his horrid administration and the Republican Party get away with their crap for way too long.
The republicans should be ashamed. But I guess you have to have shame first

Congress is supposed to be the most powerful branch. They can override the courts with legislation. They can remove sitting presidents. They can even remove sitting SCOTUS justices.

Now Dems really fucking need to start impeachment proceedings. The sheer meltdown from Trump when he screams at someone to have his boy Barr immediately run to SCOTUS crying for help - and is told by Barr that it doesn't work that way.

Trump might run around the WH lawn screaming incoherently at the sprinkler system.

I feel as though you could flesh out a good week's worth of WaPo content with nothing but articles that start with "Trump shows profound misunderstanding of..."

He would certainly be free to go to the Supreme Court, but he wouldn't get a single vote in his favor.

Who will stop him when he goes to the Supreme Court? Oh, no one just like after every other thing he's done? Ok.

He's been able to do everything he's wanted to so far without any more than "discussions" about how bad or illegal or wrong it is, why should he worry about what the constitution might say about this?

It's like having the entire government in your pocket for two years means nothing.

He's just falling back on "just sue them" as a response to everything, and he thinks the Supreme Court is the end-all, be-all court for suing someone because he's president.

Everyone knew from the jump that he was grossly unqualified to be in the position he's in. The people who voted for and still support him never cared. I hope the state courts tear him a new asshole the minute he's a private citizen again.

I don't think it's a stretch.

Trump's picks Kavanaugh and Barr are both explicitly in favor of unchecked executive power.

I mean Kavanaugh is literally on record saying that United States v. Nixon was wrongly decided....

Saying what Trump wants to hear to get the job?

Kavangh is basically set for life and has no masters unless they share a shitty opinion. Are SCJ basically untouchable once elected?

"I will sue you! In SUPREME COURT!!"

I imagine Trump will sue everyone and it will drag on so long he will never go to prison because well, he kicked the bucket or he is ill, fake or not and the narrative will be it's a waste of tax dollars, leave the old ill man alone all while people lap up a trillion dollar tax cut for the rich and other such shit. Idiots.

The fact he's bringing up impeachment means we are in stage 2 and impeachment could be just around the corner.

This is him basically admitting that Kavanaugh is a stooge

He's been playing this card ever since Kavanaugh got the seat. Any time he's said "leave it to the courts" the last couple of months the intent was always that any charge would rise up to the SCOTUS and get wiped clean now that the conservative side's been energized with Kavanaugh's presence.

well, uh, the trial is run by the chief justice? That's about all SCOTUS has to do with it. And for the millionth time, "High crimes and misdemeanors" doesn't mean crimes -- though trump has committed both

The good news here is we are getting another infrastructure week

I'm pretty sure every person on the Supreme Court would just burst out laughing at him if he just walked in there demanding anything in this situation

To say he misunderstands the Constitution is incorrect. That implies he has some understanding of it but he's wrong. That's not the case. I guarantee he's never looked at it, he doesn't know what's in it, and he doesn't care.

Impeachment in my opinion is a waste of time. Primarily because it will never receive the 67 votes in the Senate it needs.

It will be used as a campaign issue to try and galvanize independent and moderate voters to vote for him. Not sure this country can survive another 4 years of Trump. Better to concentrate on the issues where he is vulnerable especially on healthcare, immigration, and the environment.

Perhaps a Democratic candidate wins 2020, then they can indict his ass.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't. If they don't, Trump will claim victory with, "Dems proved they had nothing to impeach me for, totally clears the President". If they do, he'll claim victory with the Senate backing him.

He has no morality or ethics. There is no level the man will not stoop too and no matter how low he goes, his base stands with him. Primarily because they hate liberals that much, or to be more precise they have been trained to, by right wing media.

1. Congress' ability to get tax returns is black letter law. There's not some kind of legal question for the SC to answer here.

2. Fair, and that could happen, but the events surrounding Nixon have created quite a bit of precedent that the President and other executive branch employees need to comply with subpoenas for evidence that Congress requests. Kavanaugh might laugh at that whole idea, but there's a reason we have more than 1 Justice.

3. Well, this is entirely unrelated to impeachment. Congress isn't going to be indicting Trump. It's also not really up for debate that anyone who's not-the-President can be indicted for crimes they commit. If Trump is hit with indictments it will be once he's no longer President to avoid the whole sticky situation.

I await Trump being escorted out of the White House in Handcuffs in 2020 and the new Democrat President takes over and says "NO Pardon".
