Advertisers are the only ones who have the power to force Fox News to change. Thing is, advertisers can't stay away from Fox's 65+ whiter boomer audience. Every once in a while a Fox host or guest let the mask slip too far and says something really fucked up/bigoted, enough to get mainstream attention. The advertisers scrurry away for a bit for PR sake. Then they start right back up approving ads to run on Fox once the heat died down a few weeks later. David Hogg and Laura Ingram's spat last year is a perfect example of this.

The fact that a significant portion of the American population can be successfully duped by the likes of Carlson and Hannity goes to show how horribly fucking easy it is. To a degree these people are convinced because they want to be convinced, and have already turned on the TV ready to be so.

Yes. It is currently how the Republican party operates. Fear rhetoric specifically targeting Brown people and Muslims. Also Black people and how they are thugs and living on your tax money. Their whole goal is to scare people to the polls because if not for that distilled fear, the people might actually start to think about how Republican policies only benefit the super rich.
Tucker has taken it upon himself to become the "the minorities are out to kill you and destroy America" hour. Also known as the White Supremacy hour. I have serious doubts that, unlike Trump, he believes most of the shit he spews but he believes it is for the greater good (and specifically for people like himself) to fool/terrify the masses.
I'm not entirely convinced that what we know as Tucker Carlson today is not in fact a sentient, malignant YouTube comment that burrowed into the man's brain about a year after Jon Stewart murdered him on his own show, and has been piloting him from inside his decaying, bloated husk ever since.

It's literally Nazi rise to power playbook. Usurp populist sentiment and exploit it for more followers of the cause. This is why centrism is also a danger. Centrists push back against the left gaining power and tackling populist problems with legitimate action. That leaves a power vacuum that fascists like Tucker are happy to occupy.
