Information
Tumblr will permanently ban adult content from its platform on December 17th in a move that will eradicate porn-related communities on the platform and fundamentally alter how the service is used. The ban includes explicit sexual content and nudity with a few exceptions, the company tells The Verge. The new policy's announcement comes just days after Tumblr was removed from Apple's iOS App Store over a child pornography incident, but it extends far beyond that matter alone. "Adult content will no longer be allowed here," the company flatly states in a blog post set to be published on Monday.

Information
Posts with porn content will be set to private, which will prevent them from being reblogged or shared elsewhere in the Tumblr community.

https://tumblr.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/231885248-Sensitive-content

Banned content includes photos, videos, and GIFs of human genitalia, female-presenting nipples, and any media involving sex acts, including illustrations. The exceptions include nude classical statues and political protests that feature nudity. The new guidelines exclude text, so erotica remains permitted. Illustrations and art that feature nudity are still okay — so long as sex acts aren't depicted — and so are breastfeeding and after-birth photos.

I fully expected this to include 'sexual speech' in a way that would only end up hurting the vast number of LGBT communities on Tumblr.

Colour me surprised.

RIP Tumblr, it was my go-to site for fun dumb pics and artists, which has been largely replaced by Twitter. And yes, Tumblr was a paradise for finding blogs devoted to an extremely specific interest (i.e. "here's a blog dedicated to Taylor Swift's feet when she's wearing green nail polish!")

I wonder what's going to fill the void (heh) here. I saw a couple people on twitter say they'll be posting NSFW stuff to Pillowfort. Haven't heard of it, but I'm sure something will pop up to replace it.

...Is there even anything else on Tumblr at this point?

Well, I know I won't be going back there. Also, this is a huge blow to queer porn.

Just refusing to come to terms with the fact they bought a porn site, people will migrate to old sites and then some successor (probably by patreon) will be made.

I can't imagine Tumblr will have much relevance after this. It seems like most fan artists will be focusing on Twitter now.

A lot of the LGBT community used Tumblr to discuss, share, discover, and generally be comfortable with their sexuality. This is really shitty just to please Apple.

This literally makes no sense to me, for what purpose even? The content on the website was there, but only accessible if you search for it or associate with people who do, it has SFW places and NSFW places. Is there some weird fear that children might stumble into porn? It seems like a very large portion of the users on the site relied on Tumblr for adult content, so how could they not have expected this backlash. Is basically killing the site altogether their plan in the first place and this is just a cover and the start of their slow process of killing it off?

I don't even use Tumblr at all, but I know people who rely on it for the livelihood of their sex work, it's just such a dramatic and sudden change for seemingly nothing. It just feels like there's no rhyme or reason for it, just "we don't like porn, so get rid of it".

Tumblr is how I got into shemale porn. Trappyfeet! Granted, I haven't used the site much the past two years...

A lot of SFW content is being flagged, even some of my own, 100% SFW content is flagged. I can't see Tumblr lasting very long after this takes places. I know there's alternatives, but none that are as convenient as Tumblr. If I want to be "Horny on main" on Twitter, I need to make a totally seperate alt-account, on tumblr I can just make a separate blog with my existing account.

Even if they could afford to lose the actual porn, which they probably can't, policing it is going to kill all the art communities that exist there, since no one is going to want to deal with a site that may decide their latest drawing is too risqué. And what's the point of these image blogs if artists no longer want to be there? Not to mention all the explicitly sexual communities of LGBT people who would have to be constantly on edge to stay, and who have been the backbone of the site's culture. They've just given up, and would prefer that no one be around for when they kill it.

They were taken off the app store because of the bots with Child pornography, Verizon is too cheap to hire a staff like any other porn site would use to weed out illegal stuff so they're going to use machine learning to wipe out anything that even looks adult.

Tumblr scrambling to deal with this situation is understandable given it was the existence of cp that lead to tumblr's recent actions. This however seems really backwards as the stigma against adult content needs to go away not purge adult content and Tumblr allowing adult content is what helped it become the go to blog site for so many.

Really questionable move as this may turn it into a super clean site but what is the point if you probably lose the majority of your userbase.

This is also an extremely shitty situation for artists especially ones that aren't already known by a good amount of people. Really curious where artists will go. Sure twitter etc. exist for posting stuff but where will they post the current progress of something they are working on for others to see

So is this why you can't find the app on Ios store? Will they bring it back once all the NSFW content is gone?
