I woke up and I saw this program heavily discussed on my japanese TL on Twitter: TV Asahi did a show called "TV Game Sousenkyo" and selected the best 100 videogames of all time, supposedly selected by 50.000 votes. Breath of the Wild won first place. This is the list in japanese, I will try to translate it now (Hellfire did it first, thanks!)

Yeah, I know, super questionable "Famitsu style" choices but it's japanese TV. I must say the only real reason why I'm posting this is because the TV program was a success and it's trending on Twitter right now in Japan. The list is from Denfaminicogamer.

Seems biased towards more recent games.

I am also surprised at BotW over FFVII.

Splatoon 2 is the 5th greatest game of all times? Come on 🤣

I like how you go through this list and it seems for a second like it's all Nintendo and Pokemon, then they suddenly sucker punch you with, like, Suikoden 2 and Tactics Ogre.

Switch running things in that top 10. Who knew the console had the power to erase memories of old games

Funny how 5 games from the top 10 are from Nintendo, while the other 5 are from Square Enix.
But all 5 games from Square Enix are before Squaresoft and Enix merger back in 2003, while 4 of the 5 games from Nintendo are recent games released on Switch.

Seems biased towards more recent games.

...which is perfectly obvious...?

The video game market greatly expanded in the last two decades and furthermore people that were interested in video games 25-30 years might not be interested in the media anymore, henceforth not participating in this kind of survey.

Also, more popular games get more votes. All games in the Top 10 have sold 2m+ units in Japan. Another obvious aspect in surveys.

Majora's Mask is not in the top 100, Pokémon Sword & Shield in top 20... Yeah... Hard disagree for me.

DQV being second isn't surprising, it's also my favourite JRPG of all time.

I guess if nothing else the list tells me that Japanese players love games developed in Japan...

Your Imagination
Apex Legends 30?

I had no idea it had that traction in Japan.
It's extremely popular there - though no idea why. Fortnite is trying to make inroads in Japan with collabs like Naruto and potentially more in future like Luffy, Tanjiro, Gundam and more.

Several times I have considered starting to play Apex if only for the huge JP following and several of my friends playing, but I just can't get over the art style.

This about what I got out of it as well. I feel like western enthusiasts love Japanese games as well as western games, but it doesn't seem to be the other way as much?

Makes sense. Those games sold way more. Mother 2 sold double of what its sequel sold. It's also been re-released more GBA, various virtual consoles, and the SNES/Super Famicom Classics.

So its ultimately just another popularity contest? I don't know what the point really is. Mostly just tells me how many great games just get completely passed on.

Off-Topic: Not gonna lie, I enjoyed trying to read out all the names in kana, that was fun!

on-topic: some interesting placement - MH: World above any of the previous ones (perhaps because it's new), if only cause people kept going "they're tryna make MH for them western folks with this one!"

and Persona 3,4 and 5 in there (5 twice with Royal)!

This is a good list of games (the full 100).

Sort of expected but I wish there was a bit more Western representation there too.

Also no Valkyrie Profile. The masterpiece everyone including Square and Tri-Ace forgot.

Seems biased towards more recent games.

Over half the Top 20 are older games - 6 from NES/SNES era and 6 from the PS1/PS2 era.

Whats the best way to play DQV? Always heard how amazing it is.

The DS version is fine. I think there's a mobile port of that version as well.

There's a PS2 version that's arguably better but it's Japanese-only. There's also the SNES original, but the remakes improved the game noticeably.
