Dud serendipitously finds himself on the doorstep of a rundown fraternal lodge, where a middle-aged plumbing salesman and "Luminous Knight" of the order, Ernie, welcomes him into a world of cheap beer, easy camaraderie and the promise of Alchemical mysteries that may - or may not - put Dud on the path to recover the idyllic life he's lost.

Now, years later, Harley has become a famous Hollywood actor playing a grown-up version of what he actually was as a kid. And it's wearing on him. After an embarrassing public meltdown in Hollywood, Harley returns to his hometown to take a break but finds that he can't leave solving mysteries behind. This visually stunning, new reality series follows 12 diverse individuals as they're dropped alone throughout various islets in Indonesia and challenged to survive among washed-up luggage, scattered resources and abandoned structures.

The only way to leave the remote islands is to persevere long enough to be rescued or to quit. As dramatic situations unfold on an expanse of islands in the South Pacific, the series flashes back to the real lives of each participant in documentary fashion, demonstrating haunting parallels to the lives they left behind.

Hang Ups - Channel 4 (Aug 8)

VG4vK4S.jpg

Stephen Mangan stars as Dr. Richard Pitt, a therapist with a chequered professional career, who finds himself at a crossroads in life – a crossroads precipitated by the startling realisation that his life appears to be falling apart at the seams….

After the collapse of his previous group therapy practice, Richard is no longer able to conduct the traditional 50-minute sessions most therapists have with their patients. Instead, he's developed a new form of therapy –weekly quick-fire sessions with his patients which take place online, through a webcam. The few patients on his list present a hilarious and outrageous catalogue of neuroses, phobias, issues, anxieties and psychopathies, but even these short sessions, where he's confronted by everything from the sublime to the ridiculous, are not his greatest challenge... His patience and temperament are stretched to their limit by the daily interruptions of a demanding extended family, errant teenagers and his own trouble-filled past...

"Hang Ups" is a farcical, dark and perceptive comedy about a man trying to help other people keep their shit together while his own inexorably falls apart. Heavily improvised, each of Dr. Pitt's therapy sessions are startling, unpredictable, discomfiting and hilarious.

"Hang Ups", with pathos and humour, presents a family and a society that have the opportunity to be more connected than ever before, but who in reality find themselves utterly disconnected. Time poor and technology rich, self-obsessed and neurotic, image-conscious but insecure, the world is full of hang ups and is it any wonder why…?

Better Call Saul, The Sinner, Jack Ryan, Disenchantment, Ozark, The Innocents, Ghoul, Lodge 49... this month is stronger with things I'm interested in than I originally thought!

Plus I'm catching up on Succession before the finale, and working my way through Counterpart.

Another awesome thread, great work!

  • Better Call Saul - My favorite ongoing series (after FX's Fargo, which isn't back until... 2020, looks like). BCS has been great and I'm looking forward to seeing where they go this season. I'm tempted to watch season 3 again in preparation for new episodes
  • Fear the Walking Dead - I checked out of TWD proper a while back but have stuck with Fear so far. Want to see how the rest of the season plays out, at least.
"Laura" was such a breath of fresh air, a mostly standalone episode. A small, bittersweet story without the baggage of the main storyline and its central cast. Other than that episode, though...

I know FTWD's characters aren't always making reasoned, responsible or sane decisions (Chris, anyone?), but the way things have gone the first half of this season has kind of soured me on the series. The story overall this season has been kind of disappointing.
  • I've got a backlog of Legion episodes to watch, too.

Props on the thread

Better Call Saul

The Sinner is tempting because of Carrie Coon, but the subject matter isn't usually my cup of tea.

August is lighter than I thought. My only definites are Better Call Saul, Insecure, and The Sinner, and I might jump back into Ozark S2 if I have a free weekend, despite not particularly enjoying S1.

Looks like a lot of garbage other than the good returning shows (BCS, Mr. Mercedes, Insecure).

That description for Random Acts of Flyness makes it sound like potentially the worst show ever made.

Malverde

One Winged Slayer
Avenger
Disenchantment is the only new one for me. I'll be finishing up Preacher this month and maybe starting Sharp Objects and Castle Rock. I am also behind on Cloak and Dagger. And I want to binge through all of Ash vs Evil Dead at some point to see what that was all about....

There really are not enough hours in the day.

What if your average workaday existing suddenly was changed by a single decision? Here's one idea. Amazon is out with the first trailer for Forever, its comedy series starring Saturday Night Live veterans Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen in which a little recreation turns in a life-changing event.

The logline: Married couple June (Rudolph) and Oscar (Armisen) live a comfortable but predictable life in suburban Riverside, CA. For 12 years they've had the same conversations, eaten the same meals and taken pleasant vacations at the same rented lake house. But after June talks Oscar into shaking things up with a ski trip, the pair find themselves in completely unfamiliar territory.

Catherine Keener, Noah Robbins and Kym Whitley co-star in the single-camera comedy created Emmy-winner writer-producers Alan Yang (Master of None) and Matt Hubbard (30 Rock). The duo — who also worked together on NBC's Parks and Recreation — exec produces along with Tim Sarkes, Dave Becky, Rudolph and Armisen (executive producer). The series from Universal TV starts streaming September 14 on Amazon Prime.
I've seen the first few episodes and liked it a fair bit. Worth a look this Fall.

Is the Ultraviolet show thats coming to Netflix just the Polish series, or did they remake it? Was the original Polish show good?

Definitely interested in Jack Ryan and Better Call Saul. Not much else has my interest at the moment.

Really liked The Sinner season 1, but it was one of those shows that I dont see the need for a season 2. How has it been so far?

Reviews are solid. Most note that the material is decent and mostly elevated by the cast.

That good to hear lol. Will check out the first episode and see how it is. After True Detective Season 2, im always weary about these sorts of shows now.

Speaking of True Detective, has there been any new news regarding the 3rd season? Last I heard was the cast announcements like a year ago...

Production wraps this month, so we should see it early 2019(?) There have been various bumps in the road but it sounds like they're close to finishing up.

The Orville, The Expanse.

Also, catching back up with Preacher. I just hate, hate, hate the AMC app and even the network, so ad-heavy. And paying $5/month for one channel doesn't do it for me either. I wish this show was on almost anything else.

Another light month!? What is this wizardry?

I don't think I have a single Will Watch this month show for the first time in years... this is a weird feeling.

Might Watch:
Lodge 49 - depending on reviews for the full season
Random Acts of Flyness - depending on how it turns out
Disenchantment - depending on when I get a hang over and just wanna watch a dumb show
Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan - it's the dumbest of spy fiction (and barely that at times) but I guess it could be fine?

I finished up watching Casual's final season tonight and I loved it. I always thought this was a good show that could be at times great, but for the first time, I found this to be an all-around great season for the series. It was funny and odd like always and even made me tear up a bit during the final couple episodes. They did a good job of wrapping things up. The characters showed some growth. There were some clever and appropriate callbacks to the pilot during the finale that didn't feel forced. I was happy with where each character's story ended. I'll miss this bunch, particularly Alex, Valerie and Leon. They could be a whole lot of fun together.

All about better call saul. Probably fear the walking dead, although the events of the last half season pissed me off its still entertaining enough.

Garage sale mysteries made me laugh.
