Twitter to kill the ‘ratio’ with new options to restrict who can reply

So basically FaceBook-style privacy options. Except for replies instead of who can see what.

Statement is gonna backfire so badly. Screenshots are a thing.

Sounds like one of those things that will be pulled back almost instantly

But I look forward to the creative way for people to get around that

This is basically allowing abusers to post whatever the fuck they want without any kind of repurcussions. Twitter needs better reporting and abuse management, not this bullshit.

This is basically the end of most normal people using Twitter, because what's the point without the dunking on famous people?

Twitter really doesn't like their alt-right asshole friends getting ratio'd for hate speech and punching down.

Isn’t this similar to Instagram’s recently announced plan to remove likes from its platform this year? I don’t see the issue. I think the removal of these metrics allows the smaller fish to thrive. Right now, the “likes” metrics of social media is significantly weighted in the favor of big business and influencers with a lot of money. And, yes, I know this pertains to the ratio, but it’s still a related metric affected by how much of a following you can gather, which is largely dependent on your marketing budget.

To see this in a more positive light, this looks like a great way for communities like the LGTBQ+ community to be able to shield themselves from abuse without having to set their account to private. I know tons of people who asked for almost exactly this kind of feature, simply to be able to safely engage with the group of people they want to engage with.

Isn't that statement option what we call a direct violation to 'freedom of speech'? not being able to reply to anything?

The NYT Op-Ed page is salivating at this.

Accounts that rely on bots will switch to statement tweets with the occasional group circle jerk, basically thousands of faceless likes with no engagement whatsoever. Which further incentivizes using bots to promote bs.

Oh good, more racist nazi's finding a platform they can scream onto and never get challenged so they feel they're always in the right, cool cool.

Yes, let's just allow things to be more of an echo chamber than they already are.

Look at the replies on this super fake photoshopped image that a congressman posted.

Next time, he's just gonna do that in statement mode.

It's obvious why they're doing this but Twitter is awful for any "discussion" anyway.

Most people restrict their Twitter access. Allowing people to publicly state whatever to a global audience without allowing others to respond is cowardice for a social media platform built for discussions.

Request: if you’re going to post a “statement” then no one can RT or Like it
