Excerpts below:

A United Nations official investigating poverty in the United States was shocked at the level of environmental degradation in some areas of rural Alabama, saying he had never seen anything like it in the developed world.

"I think it's very uncommon in the First World. This is not a sight that one normally sees. I'd have to say that I haven't seen this," Philip Alston, the U.N.'s Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, told Connor Sheets of AL.comearlier this week as they toured a community in Butler County where "raw sewage flows from homes through exposed PVC pipes and into open trenches and pits."
Of particular concern to Alston are specific poverty-related issues that have surfaced across the country in recent years, such as an outbreak of hookworm in Alabama in 2017—a disease typically found in nations with substandard sanitary conditions in South Asia and Subsaharan Africa.
According to the Census Bureau, nearly 41 million people in the U.S. live in poverty. That's second-highest rate of poverty among rich countries, as measured by the percentage of people earning less than half the national median income, according to Quartz.
These income and wealth disparities affect minorities the most. Black, Hispanic, and Native American children, for example, are two to three times more likely to live in poverty than white kids, according to a study using Census data by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

Economic inequality and racial discrimination have also been linked with civil rights abuses, particularly in Alabama and other states across the South. Furthermore, police shootings of unarmed black men and women are of deep concern to the U.N.

who cares about poverty as long as they get to take a half-baked stand on abortion, an issue which was settled 40 years ago?

Wow. Even worse than West Virginia?

Well, considering what I've seen from rural Alabama (and Mississippi), this isn't too surprising.

The American Empire is rotting from within, like many great empires of men. We don't really know how the world will look after the inexorable decline of the world's sole remaining superpower. Maybe China will rise to take America's place in world affairs.

People will gladly cut their leg off as long as a minority loses both of theirs

You watch them make excuse after excuse.

"they're lying"
"they're being paid"
"the girls are to blame as well"
"it was a different time"

When what they really want to say

"I DON'T LIKE BLACK PEOPLE OK"
I especially enjoyed how different the reaction is once Bill Clinton is brought up

The lack of self awareness is breath-taking. They take it as a conspiracy that these women are lying because they didn't say anything at the time.

Then they admit they also received similar harassment from others but never said anything until now!!!

It's pretty close as far as income goes.

The poorest part of the US is Puerto Rico though.

China has all of America's problems but magnified.

I have all the empathy in the world for people caught up in those conditions, but this is what they voted for.... so until they do something about that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

More people are living in poverty, than the whole population of Canada. That's shocking.

They're too dumb to see the wool over their eyes. How much of rural America will never vote Democrat? All because they are fed lies about trickle down economics and the evils of socialism. They're happy to barely be able to only shop dollar general stores because Wal-Mart is evil not seeing that they are getting weirder sizes and actually worse prices on a per cost basis. They're going to vote a pedophile into office all because he'll help cutting taxes that won't benefit them, cuttind medicaid that won't help them, send billions of US taxpayer money to Israel so they can maintain a military edge bombing Palestinians who throw rocks and bottle rockets. I don't really have sympathy for many. They are wilfully ignorant and they choose to be.

I mean, call me a bad person, but I feel weird talking shit about undereducated impoverished people who have no opportunity to rise above their social class due to conservative policies and propaganda.

Oh bull fucking shit. Trying to blame that on the interviewer is ridiculous. Some of you just can't deal with the fact that a large part of the population is irredeemable trash and have to make excuses for them no matter what they do and say

User has been warned for attempting to subtly accuse another person of racism.

How about the heavy racism that they have and continue to buy into that keeps them voting for policies and problem that keep them uneducated and impoverished? Is that weird to talk shit about too?

Even my mom, who hates Trump, said not too long ago that 'there's a difference between a black person and a nigger.' The casual racism here is stifling.

It is insane how a country as rich as the US can have so many problems and poor and homeless people. These are things that can be fixed with all the capital power the US has.

Makes sense to me to a degree. The country is as rich as it is because of the things that they do to keep those people from getting their fair share.
