Speaking on behalf of Ubisoft, Steam user Ubi_Warlock said: "I do appreciate why players feel the way they do about them (not a huge fan myself), however, as it was also pointed out, you can always just not buy them. In truth, nothing they said hasn't been parroted by gamers themselves over and over again, but dropping truth-bombs amidst angry Internet users is never healthy.

"If players simply didn't buy these crates, they would not be added into games in future," concluded Ubi_Warlock, adding that: "loot crates / cosmetic items in general have been a huge boon for the Gaming Industry, being a driving factor in the increased popularity of Gaming over the past decade or so."

"They aren't a bad thing if done right," they said.

Truth be told, the entire Discussion is a mess. When one user was asked how they feel about piracy, they responded with a nice and nuanced: "nice games don't suffer from piracy," while another added a truly unexpected "take note from CDPR you greed A-holes." What else is there to do than - sigh?
He's not wrong I guess, but still.

Welp. Can't blame a company to serve a market that desperately wants to be served.

Voting with wallet is a thing. It is just that one has no natural right to be in the most represented group. I personally think that the situation could be way worse with how eager people are to buy that stuff. I still see that companies try to make the both sides happy.

I've played my part. Never bought loot crates or cosmetics. Such a pointless waste of money.

Obvious, they would try to find something else to get more money out of their games.
Gamers have accepted loot boxes and now they have to deal with it.

I think a lot of these companies view successful implementation of loot boxes and go "well it works for them—lets do it too." It's one of those things where they could sell 100 boxes, if it's working for the other guy it's going to make its way into their title. Purchases (or a lack of them) won't matter, because they're looking outward.

What'll really happen is the players won't buy the game outright because the micro transactions changed the quality of the game in a fundamental way. But the publishers won't take the hint because money. Then they'll just sideline the IP because it didn't make them money.

While what they are saying makes sense, you could also extend that to Ubisoft converting to selling only energy drinks.

People buy a shitload of them too.

In other words, even if it's harmful these companies won't stop pursuing it so long as it's lucrative. So we ought to look into regulation.

For halloween i opened a disgusting amount of boxes between OW and TF2.

And every year i do it i ask myself why. Addiction is why. In the case of OW its because i dont wanna constantly play the game in a 3 week span.

If people didn't gamble there wouldn't be casinos.

If people didn't buy heroin there wouldn't be a market for heroin.

If people didn't buy guns there would be no NRA.

All these things above have something in common.

That's why nothing is ever regulated in this world. As long as people want it right ?

Yeah, it's stupid.

"People just keep buying them" doesn't sound like a good argument when most companies using lootboxes are actively trying to exploit people into buying them in the first place.

Capitalism truly is the ultimate douchebag playground. 'making money' is the only justification ever needed for any behaviour.

I was about to write just that.

They are at different scales (except maybe for the gambling that is almost touching the same brain strings) but man, place the guilt on the consumer when you are the supplier of the problem seems so wrong.

Literally what many people on here have been saying for years.

But you still have the crack addicts coming to justify them.

Makes perfect sense. It is kind of scummy but people can't help themselves and it is successful for them so why remove them. Jist don't buy them.

And I truly doubt gamers can unite seeing those comments by thise two and toxicity in general.

"If junkies simply didn't buy this cocaine, it would not be sold on the streets in the future"

Just because something that's manipulative and addictive is purchased does not make it okay from a moral or legal standpoint.

Oh no, ubisoft-san, you see, the consumer can't make those kind of decision, we must create laws to protect us from making our own stupid choices. The laws has always be welcomed with open arms by us and we are sure that they will be exactly what we need yet again, don't you worry.

That's a half truth. People obviously buy the stuff, but if they are so great for gaming why they make such and effort in developing new insidious ways to get more people further adicted to them?. Why they design a game's mechanics and gameplay around helping to sell more MT's?. If they were such a great and progressive thing, they surely be able to stand on their own merit without the need of enticing and manipulating gamers into buying them.

Shit thats pretty much Activision. Instead of calming the fuck down and not jamming games down peoples throats, they flooded the market and people got tired of the shit pretty quick. Instead of spacing the games out they just killed the IP's and moved the manpower to the remaning games. Which is partly why there are so many studios on CoD right now. Most of those studios used to have their own franchises. I don't think their strategy has ever changed but now they have microtransactions too.

I don't do loot boxes, but I do buy cosmetics and most other DLC. I like that stuff so I vote with my wallet.

Totally agree. Loot boxes are great, it let others pay for my entertainment. I've spent $0 on Overwatch since it came out and yet I can play everything they released since.

He's not wrong, but then again people wouldn't buy lootboxes if the game didn't offer lootboxes, so there's that.

Thanks for the people paying for them.

I bought OW in 2016 for 40€ and all the heroes and maps are free, couldn't ask for a better deal.
