Of course they did. Lol, who ever expected support for protesters from a multi billion dollar company?

Amazing how easily money or the threat of losing it can make people look the other way, isn't it?

Obvious right thing to do and yet they're apologizing for it. Typical.

so they first supported the protestor, but now by changing that and claiming to not support anything they are actually supporting the Chinese opression over those people, good job

Pathetic

I wonder if WD Legion will even be released in China, especially if the premise involves an authoritarian regime with a heavy-handed surveillance system. Like how are they going to censor that out.

Lol it's a game about resisting oppression*

*unless it's the Chinese market and ripe for tons of profit

Could this watchdogs game even be sold in China?

For a game to be released in China, it has to pass regulatory check by authority.
Their official website for Watchdogs 1 says that "Because of regulations required in China for game releasing permit, we currently have no plan to release this game in China".

It's a shame people are missing the value in Ubisoft saying this at all, seemingly because they were expecting an enormous private concern to go publicly gallivanting against the People's Republic of China. I'm happy with them sniping.

Fucking cowards. This reminds me of how Steam refused to stand up for the Devotion devs and their organised harassment by Chinese steam accounts and the Chinese government.

Pretty sure there was nothing Valve could do. The incident in question caused Red Candle's publishers to drop them which made Red Candle liable for the losses and further complicated the whole situation leading to where we are now with the game being removed altogether.

It wasn't Valve's choice to remove the game.

It's really interesting to see the concept of protest only be acceptable in works of over the top fiction, them being even referenced or cited in parallel with real world events being means for apology.

Simply backwards.

No politics is Ubisofts code

Yup, no politics, but "please buy our games where you participated in the second american civil war! It's not political though, never political".

Capitalism doesn't have human rights under consideration and China is a big market. Nothing surprising here.

It's clear Ubisoft has a policy of allowing and even encouraging their dev teams and artists to draw from politically charged current and historical events, but all the while attempting to maintain a hard line "no politics" stance when it comes to company statements. A system of "This work does not reflect the views of this company." taken to 11.

Remember that though individuals may want or try to make a statement, companies only want profit from as many people as they can get. Attract the leftists with alluring political statements, attract the rightists with lots of guns and violence.

Let's make a game about resisting a dystopian future and it's oppression and then distance ourselves from people resisting a dystopian future and it's oppression.

Ubi pls.

Ubisoft in a nutshell lately:

"Implies something hugely political."

"Swiftly and cowardly retracts statement saying their games aren't political due to backlash."

"Our game is about rising up against a big brother authoritarianism that oppress the people.

Except China.

China is very good big brother authoritarian country."

Yep. Banking on politically-charged settings while shying away from it when questioned. It's some meek shit.

What are you people realistically expecting from a giant company like Ubisoft? The responses in this thread are baffling.

So convenient when they can use strong political themes and messages in their games but in reality act cowardly in the face of real regimes and oppression. Is it so hard to for them to do pro democratic statements as a company?

RESIST! But only when it's financially convenient.

Capitalism, ho!

No one wants to be responsible of making its company lose a ton of money. I remember a movie where a dude stands by his principles but the company loses millions then when he goes to job interviews he gets praised and congratulated at but no one wants to hire him.

Turns out Ubisoft are equally as soulless and devoid of integrity as EA and Activision, they've just done a better job of tricking everyone into thinking they're producing art with a purpose and message.
