So many sickening things about this development, first you've got the chief whip pretty much publically blackmailing himself into a cabinet position, then you've got all sides of house acting like this should be the end of it because Fallon's left the cabinet...he's still an MP! What standards do the armed forces deserve from a minister than his constituents don't deserve from an MP?!

There are members of Parliament who have done a lot worse than Fallon and remained an MP.

It's not completely ridiculous. Thatcher, Major, Hague - all came from if not poor then decidedly average backgrounds. It's only recently that the Eton and Harrow crowd regained their positions.
