NHS doctors are warning that care being delivered across the health service has deteriorated in the past 12 months, according to a survey by the British Medical Association.

This may be driven in part by chronic staff shortages, which the BMA warns is forcing doctors to "juggle patients".

Seven out of ten hospital doctors (71 per cent) warned there are gaps on shift rotas in their department, but only 65 per cent reported gaps when asked the same question in May 2017.

Forty-seven per cent of GPs said they have one of more vacancies at their practice and three quarters of these had been unfilled for more than six months.

BMA council chair Dr Chaand Nagpaul said the results show growing concern among doctors that they are unable to provide the standards of care they want because of a lack of staff and funding.

He said the NHS "urgently needs a long-term solution to the staffing and funding pressures" it faces.

NHS Confederation chief executive Niall Dickson said the workforce shortages were the biggest issue facing NHS organisation today.

These shortages appear to already be undermining care.

The BMA survey received responses from 900 doctors, and found:

  • 67 per cent of believe the delivery urgent and emergency care services have worsened in the past 12 months
  • 72 per cent thought mental health provision had suffered in this period
  • 71 per cent of respondents felt that access to GP and primary care services had become more difficult

This is despite Theresa May saying in her response to MPs who called for a cross-party solution on sustainable funding for the NHS, that the Government was executing the NHS' own plan, the Five year Forward View.

The NHS received less than half the funding it asked for in the Autumn budget, and eighty-six per cent of respondents to the BMA survey warned the financial sustainability of the NHS has gone downhill in the past year.

Dr Nagpaul added: "As doctors, we want to be able to provide the best possible care for patients, but access and quality of care are being affected by staffing and financial pressures.

"The result is delays in patients being treated, and doctors juggling large numbers of patients to compensate for staff shortages.

"This isn't safe for patients and it isn't sustainable for doctors."

Good thing we're leaving the EU so that all the qualified doctors, nurses and NHS staff that join can be told to get to fuck and we give our jobs to pureblood British citizens.

You guys are so close to an American style system (if one can even call it that). I honestly can't wait for your conservative segment to lose their shit when they get that first bill.

Its honestly the worst. You guys are trying to fight tooth and nail for social healthcare, we're trying to copy you.

^Mr Joker American posters might as well ridicule us for seemingly attempting to slowly copy them. America is the proof of why we do not want the NHS to fail. Also why you don't act like a shitty racist nation and undervalue foreign workers.

What if we do more cuts?

Surely that will help?

Also, if we leave the EU, all the polish and brown people currently using the NHS will vanish so we can get away with not adequately funding the NHS.

Oh, and we shoyld continue shutting down A&E units around the country. So the waiting times will go down.....

Something something £350M to the EU per week.

Let's use it to save our Carillion! Wait....Is that how it goes? Or was it the DUP?

It's those browns and Poles stealing all the jobs in the NHS too. How dare they operate on me, save me and then nurse me back to health in a ward. All whilst being overworked and underfunded.

Kick them out. Take back control.

I have a friend doing her Foundation in the UK right now. She probably wouldn't have stayed even if she had the option because she's been treated like shit by the country at large, but Brexit pretty much ensures she couldn't even if she wanted to. Damn shame for you guys too. She's the best, most impressive doctor I know.

I assume this is the English NHS? Since as far as I know, things are somewhat different between the two.

Though it's still horrible regardless :/ urgh.

The tories have to go but what can we do, everyone will forget all this come election time. A disgustingly evil party.

As a citizen, I feel completely helpless. It's infuriating watching Hunt and May trot out the same bullshit for years on end when people know exactly what their plans are and there's nothing we can do to stop it.

The most disheartening thing is seeing people turning against the NHS because they believe the bullshit dreamt up by the DM about how useless the whole organisation is, despite NHS and other institutions (namely the Police) publicly calling out the government for lack of funding.

Sadly, I think this might be it - it's been a continuous slope downwards now for 2-3 years. I feel in the same way that Millennials' parents talk about how they went to University for free, we'll tell our kids how we had healthcare for free.

Doctors and nurses are working as hard as they can to plug gaps but they're so stretched and overworked the service can't help but see a decline. You know things are bad when even the Daily Mail is calling May out, of course a large portion of the readership wants to blame immigrants, health tourism, doctors... offer solutions like stopping overseas aid etc.

I think that's what saddens me most, the government will do what they can so deterioration continues at a slow enough pace and enough people aren't willing to go to the streets about it.

You're not kidding either http://www./news/article-5297257/May-faces-major-revolt-NHS.html

Its mostly based around Tory infighting though. Probably because the DM want May out and another Tory leader in now.

You make a good point. It's not as if the DM actually wants to see the NHS survive. Public fears over it to be played when it's handy though, like that bus, or when they want a change in Tory leadership.

Conservative governments are literally the most dangerous organizations on the planet. The lust with which they pursue their own financial gain at the cost of their citizens lives is sickening. England you had a functioning system and lost it because of morons voting wrongly at the booth. Sorry, the USA's system is even worse then you can imagine, I hate you are going to end up with it.
