I wonder, if, in this case, the conservatives are more a victim of the echo chamber than anyone. Or at least the hardline brexiteers. The more visible they become, the more unpalatable to the general public.

I do wonder, in addition to the general public, the party membership and parliamentary party itself..

I'd be interested to see if there are any studies done to see if the average member of the public/party member/MP has become more informed over the past few years than previously. I feel like people are following this stuff more than they did before. Which in turn makes snake oil that much harder to sell.

I'd like to think that, but remember the Tory echo chamber has several tabloids that are widely available everywhere. Once a leader has emerged and everyone flocks to him, just a few weeks of intense propaganda on the Sun and others, and he'll have his popularity skyrocket regardless of past baggage.

This is precisely how IDS came to lead the Conservatives at the time he did despite making their situation against Blair worse.

I'm sure his new think tank will come up with some stellar policy ideas to convince everyone of why we should be rooting for a glorious centrist future. Annnnny minute now...

Britain fell for a neoliberal con trick – even the IMF says so
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/oct/17/economic-lies-neoliberalism-taxpayers
Privatisation and austerity have not only weakened the country's financial position – they have also handed unearned wealth to a select few. Just look at a new report from the University of Greenwich finding that water companies could have funded all their day-to-day running and their long-term investments out of the bills paid by customers. Instead of which, managers have lumbered the firms with £51bn of debt to pay for shareholders' dividends. Those borrowed billions, and the millions in interest, will be paid by you and me in our water bills. We might as well stuff the cash directly into the pockets of shareholders.

Guardian opinion piece on privatisation - more at the link.

"Chuka Umunna Will Be Paid £65,000 A Year To Chair A New Centrist Think Tank"

Labour MP Chuka Umunna will be paid £65,040 a year to chair a new centrist think tank.

This week Umunna announced he would be chairing the advisory board of The Progressive Centre UK, which he said had the "aim of connecting progressives from across the UK with the latest ideas and experience from across the globe".

Umunna has disclosed in the latest register of members' interests that he will prepare publications and other content for the think tank in exchange for a monthly payment of £5,420.

The MP for Streatham said he would be spending 12 hours per month on his work for Progressive Centre UK. That equates to £451 an hour.

Between the news of Chuka and Clegg I guess that new centrist party is off. Not when there's some nice corporate money to be had.

I can see his connections in Europe being kind of useful but I can't think of any other reason for hiring Nick Clegg of all people.

I don't have Facebook so I'm still not agreeing with Nick.

I mean, that's flat out the language of the far right. The majority of grooming in this country is done by white men, but he has to specific Asians. And the use of the 'no go areas' is disgusting.

Judging from his speeches he seems to have a tendancy to bash Muslims. Really doing all he can there to fit in it seems.

The BBC is fucked if they actually view someone as that as anti elite. The fuck happened to it?

The nature of the remit I find is often is interpreted in a fashion that they have to take people at face value in how they describe themselves, as otherwise that would mean the Beeb making a value judgement. Which is why in their profiles of people, they often defer such judgements to what other people have said of a person.

That said, there's also been a noticeable slide towards... if not supporting, at least appeasing populists for the domestic end of things the last few years. Notice how after Brexit even a lot of their fillers shifted towards a very... 'local' or 'your X' approach.

Fucking hell. I've long been a defender of the BBC, but they've really lost the plot.

Public broadcasting is important, and should be funded, but the BBC needs to be torn down and started again.

I used to in my younger days be all for the BBC but I've happily signed out of the TV license; stopped watching live TV and the BBC with no regrets (4OD and 5OD catchups do me just fine).

People still buying into the groups not being apprehended/prosecuted before because of fears of racism is still the most ridiculous shit I've ever heard.

Tory MPs imagining 'knifing' of PM told to remember Jo Cox murder
Many MPs express outrage and say those who use "violent language" towards Theresa May should be publicly named.

At the weekend, amid fresh concerns at Theresa May's Brexit negotiating strategy, unnamed Conservatives told Sunday newspapers the prime minister is entering "the killing zone" and "assassination is in the air".

One former minister said: "The moment is coming when the knife gets heated, stuck in her front and twisted. She'll be dead soon."

In addition, Mrs May was told by one anonymous Brexiteer to "bring her own noose" to a crunch meeting with MPs on Wednesday.

Good. Race be damned when child sexual abuse is involved.

If anyone has a problem with it then go and watch 3 girls. Grooming gangs are popping up all over the country recently and it's disgusting how these victims were treat when coming forward with what they were experiencing every day for years in some cases.

If race was irrelevant then why did Javid invoke it? Or did you think people were angry over the convictions?

It's an uncomfortable truth but the majority of men involved in grooming gangs are men of a Pakistani heritage.

Majority of cases where the individual is acting on their own are white males.

Edit:

I would also like to add that the issue of race is the reason why these grooming gangs have operated with impunity for decades.

Leeds
Rotherham
Bradford
Rochdale
Stockport
London
Skipton
Newcastle
Telford
Derby

And many more areas have had decades of abuse going on but nothing was done because the authorities didn't want upset the Pakistani communities. It's an uncomfortable truth but the longer we let "race" be an issue then we are allowing girls/boys as young as 11 to be sexually abused with no repercussions.

What about the "No go areas" part? Do you actually believe they exist?
Also do you find it weird that the race of a group is mentioned when they are brown but not when it is Priests?

There are so many stories in which 1000's of victims have faced sexual abuse the issue of race is sensitive but it's a big issue that is unfortunately fuelling the far right like Tommy Robinson and until we can put the issue of race to one side we can't confront the real issues at hand which is the Crime/Victim/justice.

I highly recommend you watch 3 girls which is 3 part series based on the Rochdale grooming gang.

The video is not available now but it is available on the internet. Warning though it extremely distressing to watch but it's all based on true stories/events.
