Parliament not fucking around, i'd like to see them have even more powers to challenge companies like Facebook

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/nov/24/mps-seize-cache-facebook-internal-papers

The chair of the culture, media and sport select committee, invoked a rare parliamentary mechanism to compel the founder of a US software company, Six4Three, to hand over the documents during a business trip to London. In another exceptional move, parliament sent a serjeant at arms to his hotel with a final warning and a two-hour deadline to comply with its order. When the software firm founder failed to do so, it's understood he was escorted to parliament. He was told he risked fines and even imprisonment if he didn't hand over the documents.

"We are in uncharted territory," said Collins, who also chairs an inquiry into fake news. "This is an unprecedented move but it's an unprecedented situation. We've failed to get answers from Facebook and we believe the documents contain information of very high public interest."

Good. Glad to see them going at FB like this. Zuckerberg not showing up to Parliament will not be forgotten soon.

£50 note update, Thatcher still in the running

The late Baroness Thatcher is likely to have been included among a field of scientists due to her early career as a research chemist, including a period working for the food company J Lyons on emulsifiers for ice-creams.
It also comes after a campaign from the rightwing Guido Fawkes blog.

She's hardly Isaac fucking Newton.

That's one way to start Scottish establishments refusing English money.

I heard that the favourite for the £50 is Stephen Hawking, which I have no complaint over. I'd like to see Alan Turing on a bank note sometime..

Alan Turing is not on any bill? That's just outrageous...
We only have 4 types (5, 10, 20, 50 although nobody except bankers and tax-dodging tradesmen use the 50). The Queen has to be on one side so it takes a while for every famous Brit to have a go at being on the other side. Here's a complete list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banknotes_of_the_pound_sterling#Historical_figures

17 people have had their face on a circulated UK bank note. There's a new £20 with JM Turner on it coming in 2020, followed by the new £50.

Yes. Unsurprisingly CoE or the sadistic bastard church. Very Christian though no freedom of movement. I'm sure Jesus - oh wait. Very Christian though voting Tory - oh actually

She seemed to think faith was important, not in god but Cameron and May, i found her really odd.
Also people pointing out that she's doing the rounds at the BBC is suspicious as well, she's not an ordinary member of the public if she's doing the rounds at the BBC.

Just another angry tory mouthpiece to add to the list. BBC News is a shitshow. I'm not sure how you could reconcile being a fucking vicar and being May's biggest fan. Although I guess May is also from shit stock.

I really just don't understand how anyone can act that way towards another. Maybe I'm just a sap.

Unrelated to that, this sounds like typical Tory thinking...

A single mum who relies on universal credit is challenging the government's benefits scheme for being "irrational".

Danielle Johnson, 25, from West Yorkshire, said: "I have never been this financially unstable before."

With three other single mums, she is claiming in the High Court that the benefit disproportionately affects single parents - most of them women.

But an official in charge of it told the court it would cost "hundreds of millions of pounds" to re-design.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-46355306

We don't care that we're fucking over the poor. It'll cost too much to do things properly.

https://www.theguardian.com/busines...-customers-of-big-firms-vote-on-boardroom-pay

Customers of Britain's 7,000 biggest companies would be given the right to vote on the pay of top executives under plans for a clampdown on boardroom pay being considered by Labour.

A report commissioned by Rebecca Long-Bailey, the shadow business secretary, and John McDonnell, the shadow chancellor, calls for an annual binding vote on executive packages to include all stakeholders – including employees and consumers.

Other suggestions include scrapping all forms of share options so that executives are paid only in cash, a ban on golden handshakes and punitive fines for directors of companies that persistently fail to pay the minimum wage. The report also proposes that all companies in Britain with more than 250 staff would have to reveal the names of employees paid more than £150,000 a year.

Another potential policy idea that I'm sure would have stood a change of making it into a manifesto under an Ed Miliband led Labour.

There's so many prominent historical UK scientists they could give it to, she can't honestly be in the running, can she?... Krebs, Rutherford, Dirac, Crick? Or if they want someone the general public will more likely know, put Stephen Hawking on there.

From what I read, this initial short list is literally "who was submitted and is eligible"

Somewhat relevant for the thread - noted activist, campaigner, author and World War 2 veteran Harry Leslie Smith has died, as per his son, tweeting via his dad's account.

Been following his condition the last few days and read that this morning.

A great person who will be sadly missed.

I just want to put this here for prosperity.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-po...lloyd-russell-moyle-mp-on-hiv-positive-status

Lloyd Russell-Moyle's speech was something I hope isn't forgotten any time soon.
Good on him for speaking out, still huge stigma attached to HIV outside the Gay scene. I used to work in HIV services in Brighton and barring London they were some of the best in the country.

But just for the record they used to call everyone in for a test result whether positive or negative so if you are getting tested don't automatically think the worst. That said it's been years since I worked in the UK so not sure if that has changed, the policy used to be all results positive or otherwise were given in person by a trained counselor.

I was watching Question time there and there's some bloke who said he's in a new party led by Anne Marie Waters, didn't realise she was a UKIP far right nutter.

Not a chance. You'd struggle to find enough spine between all the Conservatives to support a single human.

Yeah, even the Take back control lot(bar a few) will do as they're told by the government.
Our system is quite useless at holding power to account if it goes into secrecy mode, they don't like the people knowing even the painfully obvious stuff if they can avoid it.

This thread is very quiet for such a joyous day :p

-BBC debate cancelled, ITV debate still possible (but May is trying to change the format)
-Government lost the amendment on being held in contempt
-Government held in contempt!
-Government also lose vote on Grieve's amendment, I dont know the full details but generally less chance of hard brexit
-Farage quits UKIP for being too (overtly) racist

It means that the future votes are open to amendment, which is crucial going into next year as it could mean amendments might be made to stop a no deal brexit.

What a week huh...

I hope all this gets us closer to a second referendum, it's too much of a shitshow to go ahead with (Which means there will be many in the country who will want to go ahead just to spite the rest of us).

Big cheers for Farage buggering off, hope the bastard gets indicted in the Mueller probe for collaborating with Assange.

I found a decent explanation here: https://www.itv.com/news/2018-12-04/dominic-grieves-amendment-and-theresa-mays-brexit-deal/

In short, Grieve's amendment concerns what happens after May's deal is voted down. It gives Parliament more control over what happens next, and there is at the very least a majority against hardest brexit within parliament.

Thanks! That's pretty helpful, I expect more fudge but at least there's maybe less of a chance of no deal.
