Did a YouGov survey today where they asked me to name the new cabinet members and other Tories from just their photos. To be honest didn't know many beyond the usual - Javid, Gove, Patel, Leadsom.

Wonder what the actual results will be like.

CF Johnson's speech to Bliars in 97 - eerily familiar isn't it?

Today I want to set an ambitious course for this country. To be nothing less than the model 21st century nation, a beacon to the world. It means drawing deep into the richness of the British character. Creative. Compassionate. Outward-looking. Old British values, but a new British confidence. We can never be the biggest. We may never again be the mightiest. But we can be the best. The best place to live. The best place to bring up children, the best place to lead a fulfilled life, the best place to grow old.

Interesting article on Mogg in the newest LRB. Feel like it nails him pretty good, the utter shit.

It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that Mogg wants people to use imperial.

Nouns: The Campaign Message

960.jpg
Imagine a fucking timeline where you can vote to gut the NHS, Schools, Police and make life harder for the poorest in the country.

Then be promoted by default into a position where you proudly tell the population that you've noticed some issues with the NHS, Schools, Police and poor people due to the underfunding you voted for.

BOJO: *punches you in the face*

ALSO BOJO: Oh, I notice you seem to have a broken nose? Please, givee me power and I absolutely promise to consider ways into which we can fix your nose!

BRITS: THANK GOD FOR BOJO!!!

The population really as dumb as fuck for this to be seen as acceptable.

Imagine using imperial measurements by choice in 2019. It's bad enough being forced to use imperial in road signs (change that shit over to metric already, come on)

Problem with Boris is too many people already hate his guts, May was relatively well liked prior to the GE fuck ups where she just came across robotic and arrogant

Seems Jess Phillips is at it again, this time attacking those people (many Bame themselves) who are pointing out that just because they have a couple of asian MPs in the cabinet it doesn't mean diversity is served, especially considering the very real bigoted policies they have supported.

I think more people hate them because they are fucking horrible tories on the right of the party than simply the fact they are tories in the first place.

Neither of them care about how poc are treated, neither does the other guy (bald black dude with glasses). They chat shit and suck up to racists or are racist towards their own kind themselves.

Fuck Phillips

A cabinet job for veterans affairs, Boris really wants to go american for our politics, no offense to former military people but it's just something the right will use for elections, and then forget about.

Especially since the main purpose of the job appears to be making sure soldiers can't get prosecuted for war crimes. It's telling that's the main item, not mental health support etc.

Disgraceful that Norris has dropped the investigation into mark field for grabbing the green peace protested around the neck.

Amazing how Corbyn keeps fucking up the country. Can you imagine if he had won an election on top of that? I mean, sure, the situation is bad and we're hunting rats to put in the stew, but at least we avoided the worst: Corbyn at Nº10.

American here (sorry), I've been seeing some stuff lately about Boris' approach could end up leading to a unified Ireland, splitting up of the UK, etc etc. I know the backstop is a huge aspect of this but how likely is that really to happen?

Interesting to see the socialists decry the "centrists" when they're the only ones with enough bollocks to stand against Brexit, which will wreak the kind of economic damage on the poor your lot allegedly want to avoid.
Doesn't really matter when their party wants to inflict that damage regardless.

Unified Ireland is super unlikely. Scotland leaving the U.K.? Significantly more likely but polls haven't really shifted much so who knows. Like Brexit, the indieref was largely split by age so as more young people come of voting age that could tip it. Still not super likely though.

United Ireland would be shots across the border from the Unionists, they're not going to take it lying down

It truly is amazing how all these opportunists go on and on about how corbyn isn't focusing on brexit by making it all about themselves

(criticising Corbyn about it is fair game though)

He makes some good points, which can be summed up as Corbyn needs to step up or let someone else takeover who can.

Who even takes over from Corbyn?

Always thought Corbyn was the right person at the right time when he came in and the rest of Labour fucked it. About 8 years after the financial crisis, people realizing lack of jobs and government cuts weren't a bump but a new way of life. An actual politician who sounded like he gave a shit about normal people. Now, he's just stuck there, is there anyone waiting in the wings? Anyone who has provided any inclination over the last three years they can command the party? Anyone whose position isn't just "I thought I'd inherit the role after Miliband left? that's how it works right"

Bringing in a carbon-copy of Miliband is going to make Johnson as confident in a GE as Corbyn maintaining the role, at least people have an opinion about Corbyn.

What is this based on? Lib Dem record in coalition? Genuine query.

Assuming it's fair, what's the point? Economic harm for the poor is ok if Labour facilitate it? This is facile.
Yeah, Lib Dem's voting record.

No, economic harm is not okay for the poor if Labour facilitates it, but Labour's policies are less likely to lead to that than the Lib Dems. Labour are at the very least supportive of a soft Brexit which while yeah, I'd rather they fully backed Remain is at least less damaging and Labour's actual policies would be very benificial for the poor.

The Lib Dems are pro remain which is good, but then the voting record of their leader and other higher ups show that they're definitely not going to be supportive of policies that benefit those who most need it. I think if we end up with some kind of Lib-Lab coalition/deal a lot of people are going to have their eyes opened as to how shitty the Lib Dems views are on a lot of matters. The Coalition was not them making concessions to get what they wanted, a lot of it was what they wanted.

It's shit either way which is why I don't vote either. But other parts of the UK aren't lucky enough to have the SNP.

No one can do better or worse than Corbyn because the rags will murder anyone from labour on sight. Meanwhile the biggest clown of them all gets free pass after free pass because he's Tory. The media killed England democracy.

Does Labour now back a second referendum in all circumstances? "What we'd say is there'll be a second referendum to make a choice between whatever deal is arranged and what the public want."

Including a Labour deal if you are in power? "Yes, of course, the same thing would apply."

Labour have promised a second referendum regardless. The only circumstance in which Labour won't necessarily back Remain is if it gets the chance to improve the deal. I do think that message is a bit too hazy, and they should probably just say "Remain regardless" right now, because time constraints mean there is no real chance of them negotiating their own deal anyway.

Meanwhile Lib Dems are "hmmm well I guess i'd say i'm a liberal democrat. Brexit is bad, but it's causes... it's causes are very good.".

I still don't think there's any chance that a second referendum would actually result in Remain winning tbf. But maybe I'm just a pessimist.
But yeah, Labour support a second referendum no matter what and will back Remain if the deal on the ballot isn't theirs.

Their stance for if they get into power though is still pro-Brexit but it's at least a softer Brexit, with Freedom of Movement being on the table which leaves open a lot of less damaging possibilities than the Tory stance.

I agree, I don't think remain would win.

Whilst I think political necessity means they have to back remain and a second referendum, i'm fairly sympathetic to the more idealistic view of trying to move on from the hell that is Brexit with an uber soft Brexit and somehow trying to stop the country being split in two, giving them a chance to fix the poverty and inequality that is rife in this country (and was the breeding ground for Brexit).

I'm honestly a bit baffled I had to post 'I want a referendum to stop no deal', because that should've been the bare minimum I expected from parliament, but here we are.

Hellworld.
