It's better for sure, but for now only. In a year or two we're back to cable subscription prices and then some.
Only if you will subscribe to all of them at once. And that's the point, you don't have to. You (not litterally you, just people in general) don't need to prepay D+ for 3 years in advance just because there's a deal on the table.

I get that. Cable is exactly the same way tho lmao
Starz, HBO, Showtime, ESPN. All separate packages.

It's just crazy to me how we've ended up back here.

Has been fascinating.

"I only want this little bit not a whole package"

Fine we will all give you little bits.

"I need all these little bits"

Here is a package of all your bits.

"I now have all my stuff in one package"

Lol. Never ending wheel

I work in an office with largely government employees, and every Friday a USB drive with the latest episode of The Mandalorian circulates. It's very normal, although particularly widespread in that case because it's not available legitimately in this country.

I feel sorry for the children if their first exposure to Frozen 2 is a crappy bootleg "HD" CAM, although I think your last sentence meant they failed to even put it on. CAMs are the absolute worst, though, and ruin the movie experience. Can barely see anything and the sound is often mistimed/poor. If you are going to pirate crap, at least wait until a copy comes out where you can actually tell what is going on fully ;p.
Imagine the days when a cam bootleg was filmed on a VHS camcorder so looked like shit even before it got to you via 15 generations of lossy copies.

I remember watching the 1994 Flintstones movie on a pirated tape that my uncle got from a market stall when it was still in the cinema, and discussing how you could kind of make out what was happening if you sat a long way from the screen and squinted to reduce the flickering.

I understand that what I did say was counterproductive, but not everything people say comes from rational thought. I was just going off my emotions there.

This settles it, OP is officially "that guy" in his workplace.

OP, are you slightly socially awkward or just a really conservative straight laced person? Because what you did isnt really normal and posting a thread for confirmation of your unusual behavior isnt really normal either. ...

Also this. OP, I hope this thread will give you some perspective, at least.

The year is almost over and OP has graced us with this nugget of comedy gold. This is such a regular thing to do. Definite overreaction. If anything you should have said "Dude, did you just admit to DQ11, one of the greatest JRPGs of all time heralded by our lord and savior Tim Rogers as being BUGGY?"

OP's story reminds me of when I was at a mall about 20 years ago with a friend and some of his friends that I didn't really know. We come across this guy selling N64 controller-shaped Famiclones from a stall. One of these dudes suddenly blurts out "These consoles are illegal! You're stealing from Nintendo!" at the top of his high-pitched voice. I don't know whether he thought the guy would run off or if a mob would form to tear the stall apart, but there was just this awful silence.

We all walk/run away pretty embarrassed and this kid follows and he's absolutely shaking with rage. He can't shut up about the guy selling these Famiclones. "He's destroying the industry! We need to do something!" Next thing he's calling the police who basically laughed at him down the phone and told him to stop wasting their time. He then called Nintendo who said they didn't really have anyone who could help him and that maybe he could write a letter with the details so they could investigate.

I didn't hang out with him again.

I grew up in the age of Napster, and for a while there it genuinely seemed like we were getting back to a place where you could pay a reasonable amount (either one-off, or on a subscription basis) to access pretty much every legally. Then the streaming wars began.

Why is piracy so hush hush here?

Is it so "we" can attract people in the entertainment industry?

I think the problem is that if you relax the rules, people start posting links and stuff and before you know it, you're basically a pirate forum. And also people here want to support the games industry by being seen to not condone that stuff and you can't really have one rule for games and another rule for everything else. I think it is a bit ridiculous that you can be banned just for just admitting you have NES ROMs though. I can't believe there are many people on here who don't have some old ROMs lying around on some old HDD or in the cloud somewhere.

Certainly 15 years ago, maybe even 10 it was a lot more convenient to pirate a lot of stuff than obtain it legally so a lot of people (even with the income) would prefer to do it that way. Music was the best example, and also digital movies. Piracy was in some ways understandable.

Hell I'm probably pretty naive now because I graduated college and I'm blessed with a good job right now. It wasn't that long ago I was begging for invites to torrent sites.

Honestly the only books that are debatable are University books, some of those prices are scams. Not just in the US but all over the world.

I'm an academic researcher.

There are 2 websites which I shouldn't name here, but any academic reading this should know exactly the ones I'm talking about. One mostly specialises in journal papers, while the other one is a little more general but mostly provides the books you are talking about.

Every single one of us uses those two websites. Not as a cost saving on our part (as individuals) exactly, but because they are vital for us to do our job, and because most university libraries do not have the funds to subscribe to everything (although most libraries are pretty good and researchers can forget to ask, so any reading this, remember there is a librarian on hand!). It also beats the hell out of using a VPN for everything.

I also have a couple of papers that are on there and I'm completely happy if people download them.

If Thanos would have snapped out everyone who ever pirated something on the Internet it would have been a lot more than half of all people.

As businness models have been advancing, only thing that has been getting pirated at least here are TV shows and movies that aren't available in google play, for example.

Anyone know if it's okay to put the legit Wikipedia link to that site? Or is that considered piracy as well? Like, are we even allowed to talk about these things?

For the sake of education, I would like to post the Wikipedia link but if it's not allowed I won't bother.

Is it so "we" can attract people in the entertainment industry?

Because it's, well, a crime. At least in the US. The rights holders could theoretically come after ResetEra if it was facilitating access to this stuff. Ad networks may not be willing to advertise on your site if it's not all on the up and up. That's a can of worms I'm sure the site doesn't want to have to deal with.

It's not like piracy isn't silently acknowledged here most of the time. There's definitely a lot of looking the other way kind of stuff going on in discussions because no one actually wants to admit being a pirate (the chances of there not being a single person in that MiSTER thread who pirates stuff is zero), so it's not that it isn't commonplace. Every so often someone slips up and admits to it, either by accident (like the guy who was talking about his digital copy of a season of the show, admitting he didn't own the DVDs, and people finding out the show never had a digital release) or on purpose (yeah I downloaded the entire Gamecube library so what who gives a fuck).

And you definitely see the attitudes among gaming journalists or youtube personalities to be extremely lax towards it (most of the time), with a various range of giving a fuck about admitting it.

It's always been seen as a victimless crime, especially if you can morally justify it to yourself somehow (e.g "I'm not paying some random guy on eBay $500 for a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga" kind of stuff).

But still, you know, a crime.

The notion that piracy is inherently unethical is dubious for a lot of people, especially in light of the fact that the legal purchasing avenues for a lot of stuff are also ethically dubious. For 99% of musicians, for example, if all you do to "support" them is listen to their music on a streaming service you might as well have just pirated their stuff instead.

Additionally, a lot of the time the argument against pirating something is literally incoherent to anyone but the rights holder. If a movie isn't being sold legally and the only way to obtain it at all is through piracy, the argument that the individual must step in and defend the copyright of the movie's rights holder by simply not watching the movie is ridiculous. There are complex questions about people feeling that they are entitled to art that aren't wholly addressed by either side of this argument, but the point is that people (rightly) feel little sympathy for rights holders that don't even give them the option to purchase something legally.

To be frank, Kodi can be used for other stuff than pirated content. Most people don't, but it's totally possible.
XBMC from the original Xbox. Good times. :D Had an RSS ticker set for the weather and Xbox news back in the day. Still have a hacked Xbox to this day. Imo the greatest moddable console of all time. Great homebrew. The NES/SNES Classic also do an amazing job as well.
