All lovingly wrapped in the LucasArts influenced adventuring style Dave and company are known for.

One year ago, a demon possessed you; forcing you to tear a trail of bloodshed through New York City. Your salvation finally comes in the form of the Unavowed – an ancient society dedicated to stopping evil.

You are free, but your world is in tatters. You have no home, no friends, and are wanted by the police. Your old life is gone, but perhaps you can start a new one. Join the ranks of the Unavowed, and fight against the oncoming darkness.

Previews

The traditional style of play combined with player choice inherently built into it marks a refreshing change in a genre that often either relies too heavily on the singular personality of a game's protagonist or sacrifices gameplay for choice-driven narrative. Here there's always plenty to do, while the characters and story are both engaging and deep, giving me the feeling that I'd only just scratched the surface of what's to come. These are characters you want to follow to the end to find out what happens to them.
Courtney Ehrenhofler, Adventure Gamers

It sounds an awful lot, and of course all of it will depend entirely on the quality of the story and the writing. But then this is Dave Gilbert, and he's yet to let us down in those areas, so there's good reason to hope. What I've seen certainly suggests good things, with strong voice acting, and even background banter between the NPCs in your party.

It's a fascinating prospect, taking all the best story elements of the RPG and working them into an adventure. And thanks to some desperately needed advancements in AGS, it looks much lovelier too – twice as many pixels are now available to artist Ben Chandler, and he's done what looks like might be his best work yet.
John Walker, Rock, Paper, Shotgun

From these early stages of the adventure, Unavowed does not disappoint in any way, taking the formula used in past Wadjet Eye releases, polishing it to perfection, and then expertly mixing in themes from other titles, along with fresh ideas to make for a highly engaging experience.
Adam Riley, Cubed3

The Unavowed is edgy, but not in a faux, middle-school "mature" way. It has something to say about humanity and control, and it's not afraid to spill some blood and tackle some very sensitive themes in order to do so.
The urban fantasy premise works nicely, and the grim edge makes Unavowed feel uniquely inspired, borrowing ideas from Supernatural and Buffy the Vampire Slayer to create a compelling and engrossing story about conquering demons and cleansing out the flaws in our souls.
Cassidee Moser, Shacknews

Reviews
If Unavowed had been released in the early '90s, it would be remembered today as one of the all-time classics of the adventure genre, lauded for its innovations with the form, referenced as an inspiration for games still being made today.
John Walker, Rock, Paper, Shotgun

Unavowed is another fantastic adventure from Wadjet Eye, and it's great to see studio founder Dave Gilbert back in the saddle. The humour didn't always land for me and some of the voice acting is a little iffy, but otherwise this is a fine example of a modern point-and-click adventure.
Andy Kelly, PC Gamer

The interesting characterizations, complexity of storytelling, jazzy soundtrack and beautiful visuals of Unavowed are all what we've come to expect from Wadjet Eye, but throw in multiple introductions, teammates, and impactful player choices and the quality is kicked up another notch.
Richard Hoover, Adventure Gamers

Overall, Unavowed is one of the best point and click adventure games to be released in the current generation. The high-resolution graphics, along with the strongly written dialogue, excellent puzzle design and emotive soundtrack provide the ingredients for a modern classic that will be very difficult to duplicate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: You mentioned this has RPG elements, Is there combat?
A: Nope! If you are looking for adventure/RPG hybrids with combat, you might want to look into the Quest for Glory series or its descendants such as Heroine's Quest, Quest for Infamy, Hero-U, and the upcoming Mage's Initiation.

Q: Does this require knowledge of the Blackwell series?
A: Unavowed is set in the same version of NYC as the Blackwell series so there are some familiar elements such as ghosts and Bestowers (a responsibility common to Logan and Rosa Blackwell), and maybe a stray cameo. Beyond the shared setting, there's no connection between Unavowed and the Blackwell series.

Q: Will there be Abe Goldfarb?
A: Probably. It wouldn't be a proper Wadjet Eye game without him!
Confirmed! He plays several small parts this time. See if you can spot them!

Q: Is there be a mobile version?
A: Nothing announced yet, but Wadjet Eye has a good track record of doing a mobile port after the PC launch.

Q: What about consoles?
A: Unfortunately, the engine this game uses doesn't support current consoles

Q: Which engine is that?
A: Adventure Game Studio is a freeware engine that was created back in the dawn of the Internet by Chris Jones (now maintained by a team of volunteers) dedicated to making games in the style of classic Sierra and LucasArts adventure games. AGS powers nearly every Wadjet Eye game and those of many other indie adventure game developers.

Q: What's the story behind Wadjet Eye Games?
A: Wadjet Eye Games is a very small (3-4 employees I believe) indie company that specializes in point & click adventure games with a focus on telling a good story, top-tier production quality, and not letting puzzles get in the way.

After mucking around with AGS for several years in the early 2000's making freeware titles, Dave was one of the first developers in that community to make an attempt at releasing a game commercially with The Shivah in mid-2006. Which was an incredibly risky since at the time the point & click adventures genre was considered "dead" (following the abandonment of the genre by Sierra and LucasArts around 1999-2001) and any remaining mainstream attention was focused on Telltale's early efforts such as Sam & Max Season 1.

The Shivah was followed by The Blackwell Legacy at the end of 2006 which kicked off a 5 game series that culminated in 2014's Blackwell Epiphany. Over the years Dave has also worked as a publisher and shepherded titles such as Gemini Rue, Resonance, and Technobabylon to commercial release and critical acclaim. Over the last 12 years the company has released 15 games, 8 of which were created in-house.

Q: Why is this the first time I've heard of them?
A: I don't know! But you should consider yourself lucky as you're in for a real treat. Go play Unavowed, and if you like it please give their other games a try. Their back catalog contains some of the best modern point & click adventure games you can find. Feel free to ask for a recommendation if you can't pick one to start with :)

Other
A quick shout-out to the fine folks in the Point & Click Adventure thread for the encouragement to create my first OT. If you're new to the genre or just want to learn about other games in the genre, stop on by!

Can't wait. Technobabylon was my GOTY that year and one of my favourite games ever and I loved the Blackwell series.

I love how Wadjet constantly tries to innovate in the adventure game space. It looks like Unavowed is taking queues from RPGs. We'll see how it works out.

Looking forward to it, Wadjet Eye never disappoints. Here's hoping for a Blackwell reference in there.

Really excited to start this soon X3

Word from their Twitter account is that it's going live on Steam around 9:30 AM EST tomorrow. Going to be a good day tomorrow: work, watch Smash Direct when I get home, and then chilling out (or not) with Unavowed the rest of the night.

Going to finish Detective Gallo tonight so I'll be ready for this game when I come home from work tomorrow. Wadjet Eye is consistently great so there's no need to wait for impressions. Just buy and support what has a high probability of being the game of the year.

Thank you gagewood for linking a bunch of reviews! I will incorporate that info in the OP tonight.

I don't believe so, that's the link provided by the official Wadjet Eye page

There's two links on the website currently that link to the Humble Widget. One loads it in a pop up which is how it's done for all their other games (except Emerald City for reasons), the other is a direct link to the widget (which is probably a bug or oversight).

As best I was able to determine in my research WEJ doesn't put their games in the store proper, they just use the widget. But, if you order via the widget it's still added to your humble account library.

And I'm incredibly happy they're including the OST with this one. I've always wondered where to get their soundtracks so I won't have to track this one down.

Booting it up now! Have a few days off work and getting lost in a new Wadjet Eye adventure is exactly what I'm in the mood for.

I know Dave Gilbert and his team have been putting everything into this one for years, nice to see it's getting glowing praise from RPS and others. The steady progression in design chops on each of their in-house projects is one of the most endearing aspects of the studio, and Unavowed is looking like their biggest leap yet.

I just saw on the RPG review comment thread that Dave Gilbert himself was taking 6-8 hours for a run lately and expected a new player to take 2-3 times as long.

I also think one of the previews linked said they were given the first third of the game and it was a considerable chunk of time like 6 hours?

So for simplicity sake let's just go with "definitely longer than the early Blackwell"

Just an FYI if anyone's unaware, Unavowed on Steam and GOG have nearly the same price in Canadian dollars, which is pretty rare. Great if you want a DRM-free copy with extra goodies. Not sure about other regions but it bodes well.

Just finished the first... case? Mission?

This game throws darker than Blackwell, which is saying something, especially when the last series has you solving literal murder like it was nothing.

The elements of role playing are nice. Lady cop is what I went with, but it feels a little hollow without voice acting. What drew me to the Blackwell games is Rosa. Her snark, her wit, and her unwillingness.

But it is good. The atmosphere is thick and rich, the lore is deep and tasty. The random conversations that can happen when going from room to room is great, and I already feel like I "know" these characters with only an hour in.

Did they say anything about multiple endings? Because already I've had to make two incredibly rough choices...

Walker's review at RPS is getting me pretty pumped to pick this up. I was expecting this to be another solid little game and am suprirsed at some of the effusive praise. Might need to pick this up sooner than I had planned.

So, Unawoved has broken Wadjet Eye's day 1 sales record in only 8 hours. It's pretty heartening to see this company doing well.

Man, that RPS review is glowing. I absolutely love what I've played so far (except I kinda wish that the LOOK verb was voiced).

Dave Gilbert is amazing. That art is amazing (Ben Chandler again?). That music is amazing.

edit: AGS has had a few nice improvements too. I like that you can choose nearest-integer scaling.

Yes, it's still Ben Chandler on the backgrounds.

Is the nearest-integer scaling the "max round mulitplier" option in the configuration utility?

Did they say anything about multiple endings? Because already I've had to make two incredibly rough choices...

I don't think I saw anything about multiple endings in the previews I found. The official blurb on the official Twitter account says "multi-path" which makes me think at minimum there's one ending with variations depending on choices, etc. Which would make some sense if they're teeing up to make this a series.

So, Unawoved has broken Wadjet Eye's day 1 sales record in only 8 hours. It's pretty heartening to see this company doing well.

There has been a lot of pent-up buzz for this game judging from the retweets Dave has been posting on Twitter. Good to see that's paying off for them.

Pretty impressed by this so far. The main character's a big of a blank slate but this is made up for by getting to pick a background (which then seems to inform the rest of the game), and the voicing/animation on the rest of the cast is excellent.

I'm having a great, great time with Unavowed so far. The "automatic looking" is such a simple quality of life feature, but one that makes a huge difference - and that's leaving aside all the other things that are great; the writing, the presentation etc. I don't like making all these difficult choices, though...

If I had one quibble - and it's a recurring one across many point-and-click games - it's that I'm not a fan of Ben Chandler's walk cycles. Although he's been improving over the years, and he is a wonderful artist in general, I think it's something about how straight all his characters' backs are!

Only got to play last night for about an hour, but this might be one of the strongest 1st hour in a game I've seen in a while. You really hit the ground running and they make it very clear this is going to be noticeably darker than the Blackwell games I've played (haven't started Deception or Epiphany yet).

Absolutely loving the jump to 640x480 resolution which scales much better than 320x240.

The hover to look thing is a game-changer for the genre I think, or at least for games on AGS. It's such an absurdly simple change that has a disproportionate increase in usability. Definitely something they could only do now because of the increased resolution as there's now more space to pack the description into the hover text. The only downside I see is going to be in the inevitable iOS port, although I expect they'll probably make it a long press.

Agree on the walk cycles as they've always looked far too rigid in past games as well. Which is a shame because he's a great artist. I don't know if he does rotoscoping for walks but it feels like that might help make the cycles look more natural? Regardless, not a deal-breaker but something I would love to see them improve in future titles.

Yeah, the opening is really strong. I thought about just stopping there and playing through it a few more times but already seeing this is a game built to be replayed, I'll see them eventually.

Cast is great, concept is intriguing, enjoying the BioWare crew vibes and after a bit of an adjustment I'm used to the silent protagonist approach. Was a bit disappointed at first that observational lines weren't voiced, but being able to quickly scan your surroundings while party members chat or hearing their commentary instead makes me miss it less. Gives the game more of an RPG hybrid feel than a straight up point-and-click.

Also always been a fan of the detailed and loving portrayals of New York that Dave Gilbert puts into his games, and it's particularly striking and evocative here. Great backdrops, rainy atmosphere and lots of little animations that make scenes pop.

I don't understand how this game doesn't get as much popular, publicity on other websites as much as Gemini rue, Resonance or other popular point and click game. Because it is quite the ultimate P&C in my opinion.
