So, it's been over three months since it was released and I finally finished this several days ago…
A part of me was ready for the conclusion but a larger part of me wishes there was one more fixer with another job in Night City. The game is undeniably janky, even on the XSX, but I never experienced anything game breaking, just a few minor annoyances trying to climb through windows, pickup weapons, or completing ineffectual side quests. Everything about this game was overhyped, and it delivered on few of the promises, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t one of the best games I’ve ever played. I rank it up there with the likes HL2, BOTW and Mass Effect as being a truly engaging experience to the end.
At times CyberPunk can be epic, but it's also the epitome of missed opportunity. Night City is empty, repetitive, and heavily scripted. The unused assets and extremely detailed areas serve little to no purpose, and destroy whatever fragile illusion the city manages to cast in those early hours. Yet when it became apparent that I was reaching the end of the narrative an odd thing happened, the game kept extending my playthrough. Another call, another mission. Some of the best moments in this game happen outside the main story beats, and give a glimpse of what the world of Night City could be. There are some really great characters and set pieces but it is evident the game is missing a lot of content, which is unfortunate because even with the flaws you can see the potential the game had.
In a massive pivot from Witcher 3 to essentially making a GTA sized game their first go at it, CDPR deserves applause. However, the state the game was released in was unacceptable, and the lengths taken to deceive the gaming community are baffling. Still, CyberPunk isn’t a bad game by any means, and if I’m being honest, if the DLC dropped tonight, I’d be right back.
