It's true! This track has been in the OS since the launch of the platform and it has remained unused by Nintendo.

There are criticisms constantly levied against Nintendo for pursing the minimalist and corporate strategy with the Switch after the failure of the Wii U, a platform whose UI was filled with personality. It seems like Nintendo initially planned on using a similar strategy with their current console, but they seemingly decided to drop the idea at the last second before launch. People often speculate that the motive behind its absence is to conserve as much memory as possible towards the Switch's fast and minimalist OS.

What do you think of the track?

Nice tune. But let's be real the eShop needs every bit of memory it can get. It runs like dog shit as is.

That does sound pretty great.

Totally get why they decided not to use it though, considering browsing the eshop as is can be a slog

It's no Wii Shop Channel, but I like it. As it stands, the shop lacks some personality compared to Nintendo's other systems'.

How can I describe it...It sounds like a video game shop track. As in, music for a shop in a video game, not music for a shop selling video games. Like, the item shop in an RPG set in a quiet part of a japanese city, or the upgrade/mech parts shop in between missions.

Wouldn't go amiss in VA-11 Hall-A either.

Anyway, I love it, I'll take a 3 hour extended version of that, yes please.

It's not speculation that Nintendo dropped the music and other bells and whistles to make a significantly faster OS, they've explicitly stated it.

Around the time of the Switch's launch, Image & Form's president sat down with IGN to talk about the Switch, and he said an important bit of feedback they provided to Nintendo was to focus on making a faster, more seamless console than the Wii U. I doubt they were alone.

Scary accurate description.

The music and other presentational aspects of past Nintendo shops were neat, but every shop to date has been awful to use to due to incredibly bad load times and download times. The Switch is still bad, but the least awful. I'd rather silence and loading twice as long as it should, and a music track looping infinitely while it takes 10+ times as long as it should. Going back to the 3DS and Wii U shops pre-shutdown is unbearable.

I miss the touch older consoles and even the 3DS had. The switch menu is so lifeless and dull.

Great track, but eShop on Switch is slow enough already. I much prefer responsiveness to personality when the difference is as stark as it has been on Switch from Wii U.

Memories of spinning the globe on the Weather Channel around as a kid while this played;

That app was such a vibe.

I always was amused by how the entire world had standard skeuomorphic weather icons, but Japan alone had little cartoon emoji ones.

I do agree with some of the comments in here pertaining to how the Nintendo Switch lacks a lot of the personality of the older consoles, like the 3DS. I've been using the 3DS recently before the store shuts down, and while it is quite slow and creaky, I think all of the Streetpass and pedometer nonsense is so much fun.

It'd be nice if Switch 2 could find a way to integrate some of that stuff again, without compromising the snappiness of the OS.
