Breaking now, nothing confirmed by Iran's government or military yet but it's all but confirmed. NSFW photos of a body which shows Soleimani's signature ring on the body's hand are going around.

Iraqi state TV says top Iran commander Qasem Soleimani killed in Baghdad attack

Update 1:

U.S. officials tell Reuters that strikes have been carried in Baghdad on Friday out against two targets linked to Iran.

Update 2: Assassination confirmed by the Department of Defense

BREAKING: Department of Defense confirms it targeted/killed Iran Quds Force Commander Qassem Soleimani "at the direction of the President" "Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region"

Update 3: CNBC citing three U.S. defense officials and one U.S. military official: the U.S. military will send about 3,500 additional soldiers to the Middle East, the new troops are being deployed to Iraq, Kuwait and other parts of the region
  • The U.S. military will send about 3,500 additional soldiers to the Middle East following the killing of Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani less than a day earlier, NBC News reported Friday, citing three U.S. defense officials and one U.S. military official.
  • The new troops are being deployed to Iraq, Kuwait and other parts of the region, NBC reported.
  • They are ordered to serve as a response to threats throughout the region in the wake of Soleimani's death.

Update 4: Trump threatens to hit 52 Iranian targets if Iran retaliates

Iran is talking very boldly about targeting certain USA assets as revenge for our ridding the world of their terrorist leader who had just killed an American, & badly wounded many others, not to mention all of the people he had killed over his lifetime, including recently hundreds of Iranian protesters. He was already attacking our Embassy, and preparing for additional hits in other locations. Iran has been nothing but problems for many years. Let this serve as a WARNING that if Iran strikes any Americans, or American assets, we have targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD. The USA wants no more threats!

What sort of attack, I wonder? Like a suicide bombing or militia gunmen?

Edit: Ah, Trump's revenge. This will end well.

To be clear, this is a huge fucking deal if the US is really responsible. Like "maybe war with Iran" level huge.

Ugh, absolutely short-sighted, all this will do is increase escalation with Iran.

Serious response: Trump is so afraid of having his own Benghazi that he just straight up commits an act of war.

After years of following trump I gotta ask:
Does this benefit Russia in anyway?
I really doubt it's about Russia.
There A LOT of people in the American government who has been dying to start a war with Iran for years, and I would imagine they managed to persuade Trump to approve that shit, I would guess selling it as "being strong" and showing he won't "have a Benghazi".

I mean, not really. What's Iran going to do when one of their guys gets killed in another country?
This. This wasn't an attack on a military personal IN Iran. He's a military target in another country. And Iran doesn't want war with the US.

What a horrible situation. You have the US military hitting Iran elite forces general, while the government in Iran ruthlessly kill hundreds of protestors in Iran.

I guess we'll soon find out if Trump thinks proxy wars are as easy to win as trade wars

I mean, not really. What's Iran going to do when one of their guys gets killed in another country?

What would the US do if, say, Russia missiled a US General while he was on a NATO in Canada? Obviously, Soleimani is up to things a good deal more nefarious than that, but still, you're talking about the killing of a high-level, on-the-books government official, not under-cover intelligence agents or anything like that, in a country that Iran views as having been part of its sphere of influence, if not outright incorporated territory, for the majority of recorded history.

There will be retaliation of some sort if this is true. Sinking tankers, strikes against US assets in Iraq, strikes against Israel, etc, and a lot is going to hinge on Trump being willing to play that cool, and say "we got Soleimani, let them have their tantrum", and not escalating it into a war against the Iranian homeland to retaliate against the retaliation. So, good luck.

The New Yorker did a wonderful article on the man about a decade ago.

Shame to hear that he passed away. RIP.

While your hypothetical situation is similar, the ramifications aren't. Russia killing a US general in Canada is not the same as this situation.

It wouldn't get bought, not when we just brought the last troops home from the prior Iraq war 9 years ago, and only just finished up major ops against ISIS less than three years ago. Nobody's going to want a major engagement, at least not in the general electorate.

Even in red states a lot of the "America first" mentality can contribute to an anti-adventurist spirit. That's how you got the Democratic class of 2006 in places like Missouri, Ohio, and Montana.

If this leads to open war with Iran it will hurt Trump.

Bush went to war after 9/11 gave him a 90% approval rating and the American backing to do whatever the fuck he wanted to satiate it's bloodlust. This was made worse by the fact that it had been 25 years since Vietnam and in the mean time the US had only had the Gulf War, a quick and pretty painless victory, to go on for the public to base their expectation on how this new war would go.

An already deeply unpopular President starting another Mideast war would be catastrophic for their approval ratings.

Some people on Twitter are reporting multiple airstrikes on Iranian bases in Iraq and Syria also arrest of political figures close to Iran by US Iraq.
