US hip hop star Talib Kweli has been disinvited from a German music festival after refusing to denounce the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Kweli, who earned recognition for his early collaborations with rapper Mos Def, was asked by the artistic director of the Open Source Festival to declare his views on the BDS movement ahead of the concert.

"As we are also working with public funding we have no other choice than to ask you for an official statement concerning your position towards the BDS," an email from the director read.
Last month German lawmakers approved a resolution denouncing the BDS movement as anti-Semitic, the first European parliament to do so.
The motion vowed not to financially support any projects that call for a boycott of Israel, actively support the BDS movement, or "question Israel's right to exist".

Fair enough. Nothing I've seen about BDS seems against the Jewish people, just Israel but some folks wanna play it safe and link Israel to Judaism and criticism of that state is tantamount to criticism of jewish identity and life.

What does a music festival have to do with that?

Not that shocked.

Europe as a whole has shown that it's still pretty cool with exploiting and killing brown people.

Israel is a garbage ass country. and its clear Germany is hard pivoting this way because the optics of that country being accused of doing anything remotely 'anti-semitic' is just too much, i get that.

its just such a shame that the narrative that the Israeli government has been pushing has been bought by western powers and media. BDS is a good cause. and it shouldn't be conflated with anti semitism.

Kweli is one of the few somewhat mainstream rappers they could have possibly invited that likely has an opinion on BDS, and it would not have been difficult to assume the answer.

Does Kweli's music have overt calls for boycott? If it doesn't I don't see how the festival can be classified as a project that calls for boycott.

Kweli urged people to ask hip-hop artists questions in order to engage them politically, but warned not to get frustrated if artists do not "give you what you want" in their replies. He said that music artists bear an unfair burden to use their music as a platform because they have the ability to influence more people. Kweli mentions that artists, just like their audience, fall victim to their upbringing.[SUP][62][/SUP] In 2017, rapper Remedy and Kweli feuded on Twitter regarding Remedy's pro-Israel political stance, which conflicts with Kweli's criticism of what he views as Israel's occupation of Palestine, and his criticism of Zionism.[SUP][63][/SUP]

Good on him, the hard-right of Israel (current gov) are responsible for atrocities against Palestinians and dont want peace if it means returning stolen land and recognising Palestine as a sovereign state.

The music festival is getting money from the German government.
Doesn't answer why it has to be this weirdly specific thing musicians have to agree to.

Painting the support of human rights as antisemitic says more about the adherents of this fascistic form of Zionism than it does the people they're criticizing.

I have to disagree with the festival. I hate to see how the world has decided that anti-israel is the same as anti-jews.
The occupation of palestine by israel is real and it's a human tragedy.

The confusion in this thread over anti-semitism and what BDS movements stand for is exactly what bastards in the Israeli government and military want.

Good.
Anti semitic organisations are on the rise and we should do everything to stop that.
Stupid people are on the rise as well, seems like you're one of them. Usually I'd have urged you to educate yourself, but at this point I genuinely think everybody already knows the crimes being committed by that illegal, apartheid state. It's just that most people like you don't care enough. I humbly ask you to go fuck yourself.

Pretty much. Even if not every supporter of BDS is a anti semit the intention is clear.

Especially in germany those "don't buy" stickers on israeli products are not ok considering the famous "don't buy" campaign by nazis.

I hope you're being sarcastic, but how the fuck is antisemitism as its intention clear?

Do you mean these things the Nazis used? Does the BDS use similar styled, designed, or otherwise intended to be similar/as hurtful to the ones the Nazis use? Would you mind linking why and how they're similar?

Or do you mean in general that boycotting Israeli goods is similar to the Nazi boycott back then? If so, you're being an ignorant, apartheid state enabler.

In either way, state your sources.

The conflation of Judaism and Israel is exactly how the propaganda machine is designed to work.

I want to boycott every one involved in the music festival.

All these people trying to shut down BDS need to be to have some ramifications to their actions, they are shielding genocide.

That goes triple so for politicians.

The sheer level of ignorance in this post is amazing.

There are crimes against humanity inflicted on a daily basis and you are defending any attempt to not support it, let alone stop it.

Just refusing to support war criminals is wrong to you.
