VOX podcast made the point that they could effectively just stop allowing news to be spread like they used to and solve all their problems if they really felt it was a problem, obviously they don't care enough about it vs their bottom line.

This can only go incredibly poorly. Wow.

For a bunch of really bright tech people they sure are incredibly dumb when it comes to this issue.

"We have a problem - our users are too easily misled by fake news because they are too trusting. We need to figure out a solution."
......
"I know, instead of establishing what news sources are trustworthy we should just ask our easily misled users what media sources they think are trustworthy."
"stunned silence"
"champagne corks popping* "WE DID IT!!!"

If Democrats fall for that then they are the biggest idiots on the planet. McConnell should have the words "Do no trust this man" permanently tattooed on his forehead.

It's a classic case of "to a hammer everything is a nail".

If the entirety of your disposition, upbringing, and education (formal or otherwise) is invested in technology as an end-all solution and algorithms as the primary driver of social aggregation then you will completely miss out on the nuances and difficulties of old-fashioned human thought processes. These are people trained to think of things as if there is an objective view that will simply emerge from the collective ether of everyone without consideration for the ingrained and inherent flaws we have.

Now is the time, I'm just worried that a prolonged shutdown over immigration will lead to conservative state Democratic Senators losing their seats.

Have you met the American voter?

Trump cheating on his wife with a porn star who he paid $180,000 is hush money to was a story for about a day.

Or look at the polls related to the Senate Pedophile Candidate.

People were panicking that the election was 3 weeks away and people would have forgotten by then. And the fact is, the race did indeed tighten, and had there been another 1-2 weeks, he probably would have won.

The ONLY thing that matters to the American voter is what happens in the 2-3 weeks before the election.

Doesn't surprise me. Thinking about this practically, if there's anyone I don't want on the hook for a shutdown, it's Donnelly.

I think McCaskill is much scrappier and lives or dies on her own ability, whereas Donnelly is more likely to survive based on the environment.

Good move from Donnelly if it helps him in Indiana. How many more does Mitch need? 9?

McCaskill is one of the best retail politicians in the Senate. I'm not too worried about her or Tester. Manchin is pretty much an institution in WV. Donnelly however is fish out of water. He really needs luck.

At the same time, respondents blamed GOP/Trump over Dems.

Does embedding tweets actually work for y'all? I'm only seeing a "Loading Tweet" link which changes to "Blocked by Content Security Policy - This page has a content security policy that prevents it from being loaded in this way." when clicked on.

With Donnelly that's 3 Yes from Dems:
Manchin, Peters, Donnelly

That only breaks them even since they're already down 3 R's

This trend was going on before this news even hit big. If the foreign bots were pushing this well before the news cycle, doesn't it mean that republicans are directly communicating with them?

lol what does he think reauthorize means?
He's not totally off the reservation here - the bill he signed reauthorizes section 702 (foreign surveillance against non-US persons) while any FISA warrants against his campaign staff (Manafort, Page, whatever) would have been done with a different part of the FISA law that wasn't expiring. The big brouhaha against 702 from privacy advocates, as it pertains to Americans, is mainly because it's open for abuse re: incidental collection and backdoor searches. (And realistically Trump's people have quite possibly been fucked by 702-related collection as well - the Russians they were constantly gabbing with could legitimately be targeted - but Ryan had to convince him otherwise so he'd backpeddle his tweet earlier in the week and sign the bill.)

That sounds like a work firewall thing. Works fine for me.

So Trumpy isn't doing his job with this MEMO thing. It's worse than Watergate, but he hasn't directed the DoJ to look into it and he even reauthorized the same law that was so disturbing, I mean, he could even declassify the original warrant and documents, but he hasn't even done that...

It's all so very interesting.
