My mom said she was disappointed in me when I came out lol. Real talk though? I don't tho k she realizes how much it hurt me and it still comes up internally sometimes and brings me down.My parents are both in their 50s. When I was 6 and asked my mom why Rosie O’Donnell was kissing women, she just said Rosie was making bad choices. I’m pretty sure my dad still doesn’t “approve” of gay people that much. They were both firmly against gay marriage in the mid-00s when it first started becoming a real issue people were talking about.
In 2012, Minnesota had an amendment on the ballot that would ban gay marriage. They both voted no.
I’m not even talking about Gillibrand here, I don’t know if her flip-flops were politically motivated or a genuine change in opinion. You really think people don’t change their views as they grow older, as they gain more life experience, as they’re exposed to new information? You just hit your 20s and that’s what you are for the rest of your life? You want every politician in this country to be like how Colbert described Bush - “he believes the same thing on Wednesday he believed on Monday, regardless of what happened Tuesday”?
This may shock and alarm you - every politician in history has changed their views on one issue or another. Even perfect pious Bernie Sanders. LBJ was a racist Southern white Democrat in the 40s who signed civil rights for blacks in the 60s. If a politician was on the right of an issue and suddenly decides to vote on the left, that is something to be celebrated, not jeered and derided while waiting for a perfect candidate who’s never changed their views and has always happened to be right.
Bee tee dubs, I was 17 in 2008, when many of my Republican high school friends wouldn’t shut the fuck up about Ron Paul. I saw right through him.
https://www.politico.com/story/2016/05/dnc-bernie-sanders-convention-2016-223477I'll admit I'm not keeping the closest eye on this latest relitigation but how was Sanders holding every Democrat hostage again?
And the DNC decided to give him those changes. They could've chosen to say "fuck off, independent scum,"but they didn't.Except he didn't get the nomination as a Democrat but then chose to demand significant changes to the DNC and platform...
I find it questionable that someone who isn't a Democrat by his own admittance then demands to change the party he does not identify with.
They did so because they feared the wrath of his supporters, a portion of which ALSO are not democrats. And the DNC decided to give him those changes. They could've chosen to say "fuck off, independent scum,"but they didn't.
It's almost like every Democrat knows that Bernie is a Democrat who claims to be independent for branding purposes!
Are we really playing this game?
Here was my answer. If it really is about how people are not genuinely changing when they're "older", then what's your stance on Elizabeth Warren, who was Republican until she was practically 50?
I actually dont know much of anything about Senator Warren so I cant answer this.
I agree. And I am expressing my opinion that Gillibrand is a bad candidate and should not be our nominee. I can only hope that the voters agree with me. If they dont, I will hold my nose and vote for her against Trump.I think some people are biased towards prominent female politicians because of what went down with Hillary and Trump being who he is. I'm guilty of it myself. I want Trump to be humbled by a woman, badly.
And maybe you're right that Gillibrand being an opportunist will disqualify her. But that is what the primary process should be all about, weeding out those who we feel won't best represent us. We'll have ample opportunity to nitpick everyone, and hopefully that process will lead to the best possible candidate being chosen to represent the Democratic party.
what was the hostage scenario here? eli5
Around that time, then the Trump admin waited until the absolute last day of the time limit to impose them and claimed "they weren't needed (sic)", opposing a 98-2 Senate vote. Not sure how that was even legal.Just to be clear- These were the sanctions that were voted on in November, correct?

Bernie Sanders will be able to claim more sway over the convention in July after the Democratic National Committee partially gave in to his demand for more control over the committee that writes the party's platform.
While DNC rules allow the chair to pick all 15 members of the national convention drafting committee, the organization struck a deal with the two campaigns so that Hillary Clinton will pick six members, Sanders will pick five, and DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz will appoint four, party officials confirmed.
It's short of what Sanders lobbied for — he wrote to Wasserman Schultz suggesting that each campaign pick seven members and that the final member be picked jointly by both campaigns — it's still progress for Sanders, who has had an especially rocky relationship with Wasserman Schultz.
His campaign recently accused the DNC chairwoman of actively trying to undermine his presidential bid from the get-go, while Wasserman Schultz has given Sanders grief for the chaos caused by his supporters at the Nevada state convention earlier this month.
The concession will give Sanders a greater say over the party's platform in July, which will give him a chance to inject his progressive policies in a more lasting way.
Sure. Why not? Angus King does. It's spreading! They did so because they feared the wrath of his supporters, a portion of which ALSO are not democrats.
Perhaps all Democrats should just fluctuate between Independent, Democrat, and whatever other label they want for expediency sake.
This is divisive bullshit.Im sorry but that's not an excuse.
I understand evolving views. I mean who here wasn't a Ron Paul supporter at age 17?
But there's a difference between being ignorant as a child and being an elected official calling for empowering local police to act as the gestapo. That's disgusting.
I can't believe the same people who bashed Bernie for his lack of credibility on civil rights are more than happy to wave this away by using literally the same excuse used by Bernie fans.
There's a line of "Assholes, but not Traitorous Assholes" that people like Gowdy and Bannon are on that's going to become an important distinction moving forward. With Gowdy announcing an investigation into the Porter thing, and now apparently a Republican calling for Shulkin to step down and be held accountable for abuses of power and corruption, could we finally, FINALLY start seeing rank and file Republicans having had enough of this dumpster fire of an administration, or do we think these are just minor blips that almost certainly won't go anywhere?
Angus isn't running for President and demanding to alter an entire platform.
Perhaps. It allowed Christ to flow into a democrat as his party went nutzo.I find it questionable that someone who isn't a Democrat by his own admittance then demands to change the party he does not identify with.
They did so because they feared the wrath of his supporters, a portion of which ALSO are not democrats.
Perhaps all Democrats should just fluctuate between Independent, Democrat, and whatever other label they want for expediency sake.
I mean, nothing's preventing you from researching and then coming back with an answer based on that. Are we really playing this game?
This was the question.
Here was my answer.
I'm surprised you'd argue this, because the reason Angus King did it was pretty explicitly racially motivated. (Because to many white people, Democrats are the "Black People Party")
At least this is a tax that is long overdue, which means he won’t actually do it.Read my lips, no new taxes, except for the one everyone has to deal with.
People should tell him he could use the monies for an infrastructure bill, though the HFC would be against it so not going to happen anyway. At least this is a tax that is long overdue, which means he won’t actually do it.
Wait. You're opposed to Gillibrand because of bad positions she held years ago, but are supportive of Kamala Harris?I agree. And I am expressing my opinion that Gillibrand is a bad candidate and should not be our nominee. I can only hope that the voters agree with me. If they dont, I will hold my nose and vote for her against Trump.
However, please feel free to join me on #teamkamela
If that mattered, Dem primary voters or Dem party members would have rejected Bernie. They did not, ergo, it does not matter. If you think it matters you should get involved in your local party and tell them to be more mad at Bernie!Angus isn't running for President and demanding to alter an entire platform.
I actually hadn't heard that, and it is definitely upsetting, but it's kind of irrelevant to the actual point I'm making, which is that it really doesn't matter if people who are extremely consistent Democratic voters want, for reasons unique to their particular states, to claim not to be Democrats, especially if the party's behavior makes it very clear that they view them as Democrats (by supporting them, including them in the caucus, not running candidates against them, etc.).I'm surprised you'd argue this, because the reason Angus King did it was pretty explicitly racially motivated. (Because to many white people, Democrats are the "Black People Party")
I blame the DNC and Bernie for it. The Bernie Bros still won't support the Dems even after the capitulation to Bernie. Why shouldn't any member of previous primary's have a say? Is it just going to be the final two that have the say? Final three? Why was Bernie given this opportunity but previous folks who lost the nomination didn't?I guess my question is why shouldn't have Sanders had some say in the platform
the primary was acrimonious, and giving him seats at the table was a gesture of goodwill - if you think BernieBros are bad now, they'd be even worse if their mascot actually had been frozen out by the DNC and they had a leg to stand on. as far as I can tell, there's no lasting harm from the decision, since I don't think Bernie pushing Hilldawg to the left was what made her lose the EC.
what leverage was Sanders bringing into the scenario that made it a hostage situation? what was keeping the DNC from shutting him out if they didn't want him there?
Because he maintained a significant power bloc inside the party after the primary ended, while others didn't?I blame the DNC and Bernie for it. The Bernie Bros still won't support the Dems even after the capitulation to Bernie. Why shouldn't any member of previous primary's have a say? Is it just going to be the final two that have the say? Final three? Why was Bernie given this opportunity but previous folks who lost the nomination didn't?
Good article. Here is an article that came out a couples days ago that talks about Gillibrand and her change from her past stances.
http://freebeacon.com/politics/gill...onservative-stances-guns-illegal-immigration/
Because Bernie Sanders and his deal with W to dump Vermont's nuclear waste in a majority hispanic southern Texas town despite their objections is a billion times better.Good article.
"I came from a district that was 98 percent white. We have immigrants, but not a lot of immigrants," she said. "I hadn't really spent the time to hear those kind of stories about what's it like to worry that your dad could be taken away at any moment."
Oh please. She lived in NYC and Los Angeles for 10+ years before establishing these positions as an elected official.
If this person is the 2020 Democrat nominee, you can kiss your Hispanic support goodbye. We see right through this garbage.
Your sarcasm may endear you to some, I'm not impressed with it. Leaves a bit to be desired. As to your actual point, for me it isn't about being 'mad' at Bernie. That you think that is the reason for my stance is telling. If that mattered, Dem primary voters or Dem party members would have rejected Bernie. They did not, ergo, it does not matter. If you think it matters you should get involved in your local party and tell them to be more mad at Bernie!
Good article.

I'd get on team Kamala if I had more faith in the American public. But we did elect a man named Barack Hussein Obama, so maybe I shouldn't let cynicism guide who I choose to support.I agree. And I am expressing my opinion that Gillibrand is a bad candidate and should not be our nominee. I can only hope that the voters agree with me. Are you asking if a GOP backed impeachment is a possibility now? With Gowdy announcing an investigation into the Porter thing, and now apparently a Republican calling for Shulkin to step down and be held accountable for abuses of power and corruption, could we finally, FINALLY start seeing rank and file Republicans having had enough of this dumpster fire of an administration, or do we think these are just minor blips that almost certainly won't go anywhere?
If you're referring to Howard Dean, he was a Democrat...Remember when John Kerry's more liberal rival for the nomination literally took over the DNC?
You expressly and literally did not answer it.
Good news for South Africans. Not to take away from one user's quest to make the last few pages solely about themselves and all of you indulging him, but this is big:
President Zuma of South Africa finally resigns.
Nothing but rural white voters up where I live—all of them are sensitive to gas taxes. The rich tax cut + a gas tax would really chafe them.Maybe we should have not cut taxes on the rich only to turn around and raise taxes on gas that would affect virtually everyone else who that matters to. Shit just got bumped up .15 here in CA. It's not even summer and we're already 3.25 a gal. Even if nothing comes of it, it's exploring stupid territory that's born out of their dumbass tax cuts scrambling to find income.
What the fuck. When people wonder what's wrong with the media, this is a good representation.

No empathy. No real care. Just looking out for themselves and their money as if these people's lives aren't worth shit.
just to add to this, Bernie puts in plenty of time with donors on behalf of Democrats - he's not exactly a freeloading gadfly, here[...] which is that it really doesn't matter if people who are extremely consistent Democratic voters want, for reasons unique to their particular states, to claim not to be Democrats, especially if the party's behavior makes it very clear that they view them as Democrats (by supporting them, including them in the caucus, not running candidates against them, etc.).
whoa.
If they weren't even Democrats and weren't willing to vote for anybody but Bernie, definitionally they were completely irrelevant to the election. We would not have won those votes either way. Literally the only way to get them was to nominate Bernie. Should we have done that?Your sarcasm may endear you to some, I'm not impressed with it. Leaves a bit to be desired. As to your actual point, for me it isn't about being 'mad' at Bernie. That you think that is the reason for my stance is telling.
Bernie wasn't a Democrat, trashed the person who was and was the only other option besides him to get the nomination, gave much more fodder to Trump in the general. Was he THE reason she lost? No, there were many factors BUT he was one of those factors as was his loudest supporters, whom about 10-13% weren't even Democrats and weren't willing to vote for anybody but Bernie (H.A. Goodman being a chief example).
