I know we all have every reason to be furious but I would save the cynicism on the Jim Jordan scandal. This is blowing up.

Franken's behaviour was shitty and he had 9? accusers. He was right to resign.
To be fair, Al Franken's conduct was inappropriate and undermined Democrats' moral credibility on women's issues.
Especially given that Moore's scandal was erupting at the same time.

The right call was to call on Al Franken to resign, which he did. Compare that to the GOP, which supported Child molesters, Nazis, and other scum and villainy.
Isn't Justin Trudeau in the same sort of situation currently? If a photo or video leaks, the Leader of the Free World is done too. Franken could have held on if there weren't those stupid pictures.
Dude I fucking loved Franken but he needed to go. I was extremely upset when that stuff came out (like to the point of wanting to throw up) but it was ultimately for the best.
His best asset as a Senator was his ability to correctly perceive when the GOP was being hypocritical about family values or civility, and one of the reasons he was able to do that was because he appeared to be an upstanding citizen in his own right. All that stuff coming out about him severely compromised that.
Obviously that’s setting aside too that it was just the right thing to do. We can’t present ourselves as an ally to women, the #MeToo movement etc and then let behavior like Franken’s slide. And practically speaking his replacement (Tina Smith) has voted the exact same way he would have on all major issues.
I run a small theatre company in Minneapolis and we just had to let go of an actor due to sexual assault allegations. It sucks, I have nothing against the guy on a personal level, but we can’t be sending the message that we’ll tolerate this.

The difference between Franken and Trudeau: Franken had multiple accusers come forward willingly. Trudeau's case involved one accuser, who had already accepted Trudeau's apology (the day after the grope happened), who only revealed herself because otherwise Canada's conservative media were basically going to dox her.
There are distinct differences between his situation and Franken's, including the amount of women, the period of time over which this activity occurred, and the description of the events by the women themselves.
The woman in that Trudeau article was harassed for weeks by the press (who then basically outed her) and she finally commented saying she wanted nothing more to do with the matter and considers it closed.
Having him resign over something rather ambiguous that happened 18 years ago is, to me, a bit crazy, though he’d probably best be off stepping down when his term ends so he doesn’t drag the party down with him.
His rubbish apology for it now though is pretty pathetic.

Should we demand resignations of poltical figures for unclear singular incidents that occurred 10-20 years ago? Obviously serial abusers like Franken deserve to go, but I wouldn’t want Trudeau to step down over this especially since the woman herself wants the case closed. Like, obviously if it was rape or assault I’d want him gone.

Trump’s history of abuse was brought up all the time during the 2016 campaign, but not enough swing voters cared. That’s it. All of Clinton’s ads about Trump being an offensive buffoon fell on deaf ears because people decided her fucking emails were more important.

I liked Franklin too, but the allegations were credible.
Like I said, as a practical political matter, I understood and probably even supported the move at the time. Everything was happening so fast in the midst of the Alabama special election, the story needed to go away as fast possible and Al stepping down was the best way to do that. Looking back though, it is impossible for me not to feel bad about the way it went down, especially due to the prevailing opinion among the uninformed masses that,
Dozens of women who've worked closely with him since his SNL days through his time in office disagree. His record in office on women's issues was second to none. People have a right to their opinions but reducing him to nothing but a habitual sexual predator is wrong and not supported by the facts.
We got up to like 7 women who accused him. Women who liked him mean nothing. I can find a dozen women who say Trump is great with women, and he might've even been great with them specifically, but that don't mean shit to the women he harasses.
Franken was done because we were up to like 8 accusers. One joke/photo can be dealt with but a clear pattern and more coming out every week was a pattern of abuse. He had to go and should’ve resigned earlier.

I think it is pretty insulting to Gillibrand's career to say that she launched her national profile because she called for Franken to step down 5 minutes before a dozen other Senators did. Mazie Hirano was the second Senator to call for Franken to leave; do you want to take any shots at her as well? Al did not get a raw deal. Al got off fucking easy and your attitude right now is one of the reasons why men who have shown a pattern of terrible behavior generally get off easy.

That's not how this works and you know it. You would be able to easily find dozens of women that Cosby interacted with that he didn't assault. Does that somehow make Cosby innocent? You need to take a step back and think about how your emotions are effecting your judgement here. If holding people responsible for their actions is "why we lose" then we don't deserve to win.
We do. The problem is that the Democratic Party apparatus can compel Democratic representatives to resign or retire when these scandals come out. We can’t do that to Republican representatives, only the Republican Party apparatus can take out their own trash (and they’re far more resistant to do so).
Franken would take Gillibrand or Schumer’s (or whoever) opinion seriously, Roy Moore wouldn’t. And guess what, we beat that fucking pervert so clearly our method isn’t always that of the principled loser.
The idea of working fast to throw Franken out was to show that the Democratic Party was actually serious about this issue while the Republican Party is not. There were enough credible accusations thrown at Franken that there was no way the issue wouldn't become a serious problem in the long term.
