He also thought he could get away with having two dates to the prom, so, you know.
Wow, what a GOP icon!

If I'm not mistaken, Last Man Standing is exactly that, and also gets consistently high ratings.
Oh yeah, I guess that's true isn't it? I guess I was thinking in terms of "we're doing this as a joke, you're not supposed to agree with them" thing and not Tim Allen being a scummy person playing a scummy character. But like Auto said above, even if they did do it as a joke, it'd likely get taken out of context by bozos who would think its legitimizing them.

It's reading the room culturally and politically about Jewish people, AIPAC and their relationship with America which is complicated AF. You can't juts say whatever shit you want about Jewish people or Israel and not expect controversy. Tact needs to be adhered to to avoid antisemitism or the appearance thereof.
Fuck this. Everyone with two brain cells knows this isn't antisemitism and I'm not going to run around like a scared coward at the chance of offending Israel or conservatives. This is so stupid.

Why are you digging up her old tweets? She apologized for that.
Because we have some Howard Schultz tier bad faith actors in this thread who spend all day thinking of ways to cannabalize the Democratic party.

This thread has become a fucking disgrace.

Politicians like Omar don't have the privilege to ignore the political consequences. It's going to be much harder to get elected when the reputation you've earned is being an antisemite. Politics is not in a vacuum, there are customs that apply for voters and Washington, not being viewed as an antisemite is one of them. Helpful advice for non-politicians, too!

edit: This about offending everyone, including on the left. How can you not know this?

I'm not good at arguing or coming up with arguements, thus why I quit my law internship lmao. I'll just end my ramble on this issue by saying I'm against AIPAC and Israeli policies and let this random tweeter sum up my feelings:

"She could've easily found three or four other ways to say what she said without coming off as Antisemitic, she just chose not to...

I understand that AIPAC is a tricky lobby to properly disseminate, but if she really wanted to criticize its "hold on politicians", she could've shown more tact. Especially when "Jews = money" is a common stereotype for such a small group of people..."

Omar probably can't actually afford any kind of perceived anti- Israel or especially anti-Semitism given SLP is in her district. At the same time it's probably a very small part of her voting block. I don't necessarily think israel should just be immune to criticism. This is all interesting at least I guess.

I'm completely exhausted by this useless hand wringing over the way liberals say things. Good on her for not being worried about the "political consequences" of making a statement anyone with intelligence knows isn't antisemitic. White conservatives assholes are going to find a reason to hate her no matter what, I don't understand why we have to do their bidding for them.

Omar, what are you doing?

It's a little weird to somehow find a tweet from over 6 years ago and not be aware of the timestamp. Like did you scroll a little too far in her timeline or

Also the Michael P. Keaton stuff was played for irony. His parents were old hippies who had protested Nixon and now their kid had Nixon memorabilia and supported Reagan. It's the age old kid rebels against parents but in the opposite direction.

I'm not doing the bidding for them, it's about political and social survival. She can't do much of anything for her cause if she can't get elected. The revolution to ignore these customs has not arrived so I'm working with the current system - which makes her framing inherently dangerous for a career in politics, the she's already facing numerous forces against her for being a woman, socialist and a Muslim and you want to add looking like an antisemite on top of that?

It's not useless to prioritise political survival, not to do is so politically suicide. How do that help her causes or the Justice Democrats?

I did a quick Google search for her twitter account to see what else she's said on this issue and that was the first thing that showed up. Not everyone automatically checks date stamps on tweets.

Don't bother posting tweets if you can't be bothered to check the time stamp. I say this to everyone as I see it happened from time to time but its like the bare minimum of what you have to do when using twitter as source material for debate since when someone says something matters A LOT.

Fellow democrat now insinuating the congresswoman said antisemitic things. Of course that’s life of a Muslim in America. Lack of trust even by fellow members .
Because the belief that Jewish money is the reason for Israel support in the world is a big part of anti-semitism. Omar can make her point more tactfully if she wants to, just saying that everybody supports Israel because of AIPAC money will be true in some cases and false in some cases.

Most of these freshmen reps would be better off ignoring Greenwald. He is nothing but bad faith actor anyway.

I'm.sorry but this is unequivocally false. AIPAC is one of the strongest lobbying arms in the country and right wing propaganda takes care of the rest of it. There's a reason both sides agree on wanking off to Israel, it's because of aggressive lobbying efforts.

If you support Israel for any other reason other than to save your political hide than I have even less respect because you are on the side of genocide

What does have to do with the insinuation that the support for Israel is due to Jewish money which is really at the core of anti semitism.

Where does political survival come into this? You acknowledge how powerful the lobbying is but are ignoring the political implications are for doing that. You ok with making the Dems even weaker than they are in the US as a party if they speak out against it? I don't know about you, but America as a country is broken and its needs the Dems more than ever to remain strong against the GOP. This is not solely about speaking, this is about how to break their hold and to date nobody on the Dems side has been in position to do this.

...you're going in circles. "AIPAC itself does not make political contributions and is in fact legally prohibited from doing so. Instead it uses its considerable resources ($3 million annual lobbying budget) to link current and aspiring members of Congress with pro-Israel donors." There's nothing anti-Semitic about facts.

You state support for Israel. You get lots of money. You don't they give that money to someone else who will take you down.

This is like..lobbying 101.

it’s cool how all of the “liberals” and “progressives” in this thread who want to primary or force out Ilhan Omar are basically just underaged boomers who want to “speak with her manager” and get her fired

you know, the inspiring, brave muslim woman from somalia who beat back incredible odds to get elected to congress and bring a much needed perspective to american government

it’s actually not cool it’s disgusting

this post from the dedicated thread for her “controversy” says it better than i could

It's always the oppressed who are expected to be precise and careful with their words or they are immediately punished. The punishment is immediate. They lose their jobs, their careers, their reputation. There is no second chance:

Marc Lamont fired for using a 'sensitive' phrase to demand equal rights for Palestinians
Steven Salaita fired from his tenured academic position because he tweeted in anger about the Gaza slaughter where the bodies of dead babies were being stored in ice cream freezers because there was no more space. But of course he had to be precise and careful even if he is angry.
Norman Finkelstein who lost his tenure bid because of his support for Palestinian rights
The Texas Speech Pathologist who lost her job because she would not sign an anti-BDS statement.

These are just a few of the many examples of Palestinians and Palestinian supporters being targeted because they gave a voice to the oppressed.

On the other hand, American media, senators, Presidents, congressmen, officials can say any number of terrible shit about Palestinians and nothing will be done.

That's the nature of the world we live in.

Isn’t.... the entire point of AIPAC to lobby on behalf of Israel’s interests? Isn’t that the whole point of lobbying? I think it’s a fairly limited understanding of lobbying that it just comes from money (progressives often say the same thing, incorrectly, about the NRA when it’s less about spending on campaigns) but like... what do people think lobbyists do?

*sigh* Listen, pigeon, I know we disagree on many things but this is a matter of how to solve a problem we both want to fix, not that I'm pro-Israel. I'm a supporter of the Two State solution, for God's sake. I'm sure many, many posters here agree with me on this. I want to help save the Palestinian people as much as you do, and for Israel's government to pay for their crimes against humanity. I didn't say this before because I thought that was obvious, but apparently it's not because you still are seeing things in pure black and white. Disagreeing with you on how to solve Palestine's genocide is not supporting Palestine's genocide. You're confusing protest with action on actually fixing that and this requires strategies to weaken AIPAC's hold on the US with both parties but all you have is protesting and we'd had that for how many years and it hasn't done squat to help Palestine. I want the Dems to do as much as they can for this issue but for this to occur it requires having an actual Democratic party to fight with. What good do you think is going to help Palestine if the Dems are a shell of what they are now? It's hard enough now, now you want to make them weaker? What's the end game here? What's the plan? How do you intend on acting on it and making it succeed? Because for now I see zilch backing your argument, just straw man hot takes because I'm not a leftist.

edit: Tone it down a notch, not everyone is who not a leftist is a Republican. If you can't tell what separates a liberal from a neoconservative this is a big problem.

Huh...Omar is saying the only reason people support Israel is the "benjamins baby". Lobbying is what lobbyists do.

The Teachers Union lobbying budget is like 5 million dollars - is that bad? Are Dems only supporting teachers because of money?

But the bad part about Omar's insinuation is that that Jewish Money ruling the world is a very very core anti-semitic belief. She can easily make the same point in a better way.

Yes you're totally not exaggerating in the way Internet socialists do, and it's not like a good number of people just hope for her to be a tad more careful in the future. Per your icon, when is Copmala throwing you in jail again? Should I have an icon of Tootsie Garbage photoshopped over Gaddafi or Assad?

It’s not a fucking genocide. For Christ’s sake it is possible to talk about Israel and criticise Israel without referring to genocide. By literally no definition are their actions genocide, and it’s unbelievable insulting to say so.

Hell, one of the issues at the heart of the conflict is the fact that the Palestinian population is growing so much faster than the Israeli population. Worse genocide ever!

I mean she can go tweet whatever she wants lol. People will go round and round in the same circles, justified or not. shrug

In lighter news here's AOC's interview with Chuck Todd.

Her political instincts and training are coming across swimmingly here. Chuck tries to trip her up but she's able to dodge his attacks perfectly. I'm overjoyed that they're figuring out plans to get majorities and that compromises, within reason, are being applied to get the Green New Bill passed. That's what I wanted to hear. Fantastic!

BFN: Rep. Seth Moulton Is Thinking About Running For President
WASHINGTON — Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton is thinking about running for president, he told BuzzFeed News in an exclusive interview.
The Democrat, best known for being a vocal critic of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, spent the 2018 cycle mentoring and endorsing Democratic candidates nationwide, work that has taken him through early presidential states like Iowa and made him a rising Democratic star. He is fresh off a trip to New Hampshire, where he spoke to Democrats in Bedford last weekend.
“I’m thinking about running for president,” Moulton told BuzzFeed News. "I’m not definitely running, but I’m going to take a very hard look at it. A very serious look at it. Because I believe it’s time for a new generation of leadership, and we gotta send Donald Trump packing.”

BREAKING: Virginia lawmaker backs off plans to introduce impeachment bill on Monday seeking ouster of Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax.

Patrick Hope @HopeforVirginia

Yesterday I sent draft language to my colleagues on the first step of an impeachment action regarding the Lt. Governor. There has been an enormous amount of sincere and thoughtful feedback which has led to additional conversations that need to take place before anything is filed.

We owe it to all parties involved- especially the victims- to make sure that we have thought through every option the General Assembly has. That's what these conversations are for- so we can build more consensus on a path forward.

I believe Dr. Vanessa Tyson and Meredith Watson. I promise that my work on this issue will be tireless until we have a process and outcome that treats these women with the respect they deserve going forward.

The far-left DOES need to stop the implicit antisemitic rhetoric. I don't support Israel, but it is naive to just ignore blatant and historical antisemitic stereotypes involving Jews, money, and secret influence. Acting like "oh Israel doesn't mean Jews so calm down" is ignoring the point! A lot of people on the right and the left don't care if you say Israel or AIPAC. When they hear or read someone implying Israel controls the United States, many think Jews! The Pittsburgh shooter thought HIAS controlled the United States, and used this to attack random Jews even though none of them were involved with HIAS. There must be better communication by the left regarding this issue because shrugging it off does Jews a disservice and forces us into a dilemma where calling out antisemtism makes us racist Zionists and excusing it makes us self-hating.
yeah nailed it. money in politics isn't really an issue and only AIPAC gets criticized for it; you never hear people on the left complain about the Koch brothers having influence over u.s. politics for example. Great point there.

Calling out AIPAC as part of the wider "we need to get dark money out of politics" argument is not antisemitic in any way.
