It's so refreshing hearing dems just outright say they want to legalize weed. A lot of us predicted it would happen but it was tiring hearing Hillary continually say that she wanted to just reschedule it. Weed legalization is popular across the country! Just say you want to legalize it!

In other news, 50% of Republicans will happily admit to being sometimes racist.
Hell, so will 20% of Democrats. They must have really enjoyed Robert Downey Jr.'s character in Tropic Thunder.
I'd argue Downey Jr.'s portrayal is a little more complicated than that. I always read the character as something to be mocked, especially since the movie makes the point to call out his character's behavior, as well as a lot of other problems with how Hollywood handles stuff like this.

The problem is it's a generational thing. A lot of the legal weed support is coming from younger voters, while the politicians making these decisions are considerably older.

Reminds me of John Mulaney's bit about weed being the first thing to be legalized not necessarily because of some social injustice needing to be righted, but because a bunch of people just really wanted it. Of course, that glosses over the injustice in how the legal system deals with black people toking up (which seems more systemic than "just legalize it," they'll find something else to put them in for), but from a white perspective it's absolutely true.

There were no doubt a ton of white people who just took it as "hur hur, Robert Downey Jr. in blackface is funny" and didn't think of the implications past that. Just like how "the joke" of Blazing Saddles to them is that the n-word is funny.

Yeah. That's why Hillary's message on the topic sounded completely boring to anyone not over the age of 50. Getting into the details and debating on a topic like weed really isn't what any millennials want to hear.

I actually meant to make that connection and completely spaced on it.

Downey Jr.'s portrayal reminds me, in a lot of ways, of how they handled David Duke in BlacKkKlansman. They wanted to show a negative thing in a non-positive way (because Downey Jr. doesn't get the Oscar for his performance and realizes how stupid he's being). But, admittedly, the Blazing Saddles comparison is pretty fair.

It's not directly tied to race but there's a YT channel called YourMovieSucks that made this observation w/r/t Borat and Bruno. He loved Borat for the social commentary and satire, and thought Bruno was even more effective in this regard - but noted that it was far less popular, and came to the realization that Borat only took off because his stupid character and mannerisms became more of a meme than the message of the film.

I actually did not read Omar's initial comment as being anti-Semitic, and thought it was a pretty clear reference to AIPAC's lobbying power in Congress (though I also agree with that one tweet, by whomever it was, that it's not like people in Congress need to be bought off in the first place, they're already staunch supporters of Israel). But her 'clean-up', if you can even call it that, has been disastrous insofar as it doesn't seem like she's even acknowledged needing to clean it up at all!

I don't want to believe that Ilhan Omar is anti-semetic, but she really needs to clean up her language because this keeps happening. People are waiting for her to quack at this point, because she's already looked and walked like a duck.

Yes you're totally not exaggerating in the way Internet socialists do,
i’m not exaggerating, people here literally do want her to lose her job over comments like this, not just “be a tad more cautious”

but also, if the same people truly supported the diversity she represents, in my opinion theyd be working to amplify and clarify her voice, not tone police it out existence

She was a favourite to win the primary in a safe seat lmao. Let's not get it twisted.
i mean that she came from a refugee camp... i find that to be an incredibly inspiring journey, but go ahead and belittle it because it was a blue seat

this is the extent that i will play this game

Hot bullshit take right there.
She was also defending the Maduro dictatorship, which in my opinion is indefensible even if she is ignorant on the matter. She's a Congresswoman. She should educate herself before she speaks on hot issues like this. And if she's wrong, she needs to apologize. She didn't.

Because of how amateur hour she is and is causing damage to our party, yes, I do think she should be primaried. I don't want someone who is so shitty at this to be representing Dems in Congress.

actually pretty weird how apparently your position is that no mistakes can be called out to a degree deemed by anyone else to be appropriate if the person making the mistakes is sufficiently "diverse"

Nazis telling people their opponents to not be anti-semitic lol
A lot of the criticism is absolutely bad faith, but a great deal of it is good faith, and what I'm seeing from people is that I'm not allowed to criticize her for dogwhistling against my people because she's on our side. Fuck that. She should do better.

Oh jeez, I logged into facebook for the first time in a year and saw someone I used to drink with went on an insane rant about how lbgtq community is part of the bourgeois and is no friend to working people.

Kevin McCarthy is an embarrassment.

Amazing how the GOP gave a complete moron one of the top positions in their party because no one else wanted it. No forward thinking at all. Nancy stayed as minority leader and thus was in a prime position to take the reins when Dems got the House back.

Both of these things can be true: 1. Republicans are taking advantage of the situation for political gain, and, whatsmore, it is hypocritical; and 2. The comments have been not great and at the very least she needs to do better on the tweets.

At the same time, I think it's weird to say that money needs to get out of politics, and that the Ukraine, Russia, Saudis, etc are all buying influence, yet somehow Israel is exempt from it. I get the anti-semitic angle, but to ignore the fact that the state of Israel has enormous influence over congress is foolish.

Ramussen gooses their numbers to send messages to Trump. They allowed it to tank during the shutdown to try and get him to understand how bad the shutdown was hurting him and they’re probably now boosting them to try and hope he doesn’t shut it down again.
