Before we start talking about Tim Cook's political activity at all I would want some clarity on his political donations and Apple's.

Billionaires want you to think about their public statements and not their private choices. The latter are more important.
I generally think that if someone agree with you an issue, you can almost always work with them toward achieving it (the "almost" here is to give me wiggle room to not work with nazis and shit).
But I am more and more starting to think that a whole lot of liberal rich people use gay rights and immigration in a way that is really not all that different than how conservative use the same "wedge issues" with their base.
I mean, they're obviously on the right side of the issue, and that's important, but like, they all try to get people to like them and sometime vote for them because hey, I may not like tax cuts for the rich, but at least they're against abortion/pro gay rights.

I really dread liberals going down the path of anyone having a record on crime punishment/prosecution being disqualifying. I want people to pay their child support and not graffiti and not sell drugs in my neighborhood. This cannot become a litmus test.

The Dem ticket isn't a sole voice based on Racism like all GOP votes are. This spectrum of candidates is why the country needs a viable third party. The way this is going, the GOP will collect another win. Especially with Russian/Chinese election meddling going full steam. However, when you have such polar world views, yes, things are going to count against those they want to represent them in office.

I hope the field narrows, I'm ready to hold my nose and vote Kamala or whoever the leading dem is because a fascist is in office, 4 years of whomever that will be less than a fascist is a good vote. I just fear that its going to cause folks that are liberal, and aren't affected by trumps rhetoric, to take their ball and g home because no one is perfect. Or their choice didn't make it in. Again, highlighting the need for a third party.

Fascism isn't a non issue for me. But I know it is for people of social/visible privilege over others.

When Republicans stop using "GLOBALIST" as a dog whistle for Jews, I'll consider both sidesing antisemitism. But as it stands, the right wing is consistently antisemitic, and are also the first ones to jump up and shout about it.

Not paying your child support is literally stealing food out of your child's mouth. Not sure what the circumstances would be to make that awesome.
Not awesome, but like, not being able to afford child support warrants felony defacto debtors prison?

Not saying that was the circumstance, just saying that would be a circumstance in which a felony is probably not appropriate.

Exactly.

Also, the government itself should be ensuring that those kids have plenty of food for their mouths because they're American citizens (note: or rather because they are human beings in general) and we produce more than enough food to feed them.

This is not a defense of deadbeat dads, but a realistic assessment of the fact that some single fathers are likely poor themselves.

The main roadblock to expansion of the welfare state is the racism, not the marginally different views on economic policy.

Lol, Bernie isn't going to drive turnout more than the first black woman to have a shot at President. I guess Warren can be the first American Indian. Oh wrong thread. Whatevr

After having read this article at Deadspin on sex workers in Atlanta during Super Bowl weekend, I'm wondering if we're where we need to be as a country to start addressing the issue that a lot of women are getting harassed, locked up, and not allowed to make a living (because these prostitution and sex trafficking stings target women rather than men, as the article notes):

And not all sex workers were worried about getting busted. David, who sees female clients, said he wasn't afraid of arrest during Super Bowl week since he knows the target of stings is nearly always female sex workers.

This is probably going to have to be addressed first at the state level to gain traction, as marijuana legalization did, but something has to be done about this. As it is, we're just targeting women who just want to make some money in their preferred field of work.

Tim Cook thinks that Apple pays too much in tax, I don't think that's a marginally different views than mine.

We're competing with the EU. But now the US's statutory rate is in line with most EU countries, and the wealthy need to have higher taxes to compensate for the 2018 tax cuts. So they can stop bitching.

That tax holiday is fucking bullshit, and like, we did it under Bush so those motherfuckers can't even claim ignorance on what this shit will do.

Seriously, Omar's tweets were sloppy, but the response to them were pretty damn sloppy themselves, and I doubt we're going to get the same apology from them that Omar gave.

Matthew Yglesias
@mattyglesias

Congressional leaders of both parties really did a good job today of debunking the notion that pro-Israel groups wield disproportionate influence on Capitol Hill.

Just catching up on things, but this tweet pretty much sums up my feelings on the latest de jure controversy that has dominated discussions.

This was posted in reply to Matt's tweet -

Can amend this to add "stupid" to the bad faith bit:

I think she would have tripped some bad faith alarms regardless of what she said, partly because it's Israel, partly because she's Muslim -- and I don't think she should be scared of tripping those particular alarms. But she tripped too many alarms, some in good faith, by being sloppy in this instance.

Attacks over antisemitism from the right are double annoying because they only reason they give a damn about Israel in the first place is insofar as it's important to evangelicals' entire apocalypse nonsense and conveniently also aligns with their general disdain for brown people. It's ludicrous.

Meanwhile can't denounce literal nazis. This is all a farce.

Given what's gone down today did we ever have a topic covering Kamala's racist campaign flyers during her DA race? I mean surely the people who are certain Omar's comments were antisemitic are absolute furious at Kamala for that bigoted fear-mongering?

Yeah, they simultaneous spent 6 years bitching about deficits, then did a arguably necessary cut to corporate taxes without any offsets.

100% fucked it up by CUTTING taxes on rich people. Fucking insanity.

Also, Tax Holidays are bullshit with the new reduced rates.

Not American but I'd love to see a Harris/Buttigieg ticket.

A black woman as President and a gay man as VP would be the greatest fuck you to Trumpism and the GOP.

Lower drug costs seems silly. I can't see any candidate coming out and saying "I want higher drug costs, or they're perfectly good the way they are!"
