This is a real messed up story.

A 92-year-old US woman shot and killed her son, 72, in order to avoid being sent into a care home, police say.

Anna Mae Blessing, who is charged with murder, contemplated her son's intentions to put her into care for days, according to court documents.

"You took my life, so I'm taking yours," she reportedly said as she was escorted out of the Arizona home she shared with her son and his girlfriend.

.... That's messed up. Well, she'll be in jail for the last couple years of her life instead, I guess.

So now you're gonna be sent to a more secure facility with slightly worse food. Didn't really think that one through.

I think the weirdest thing about this for me is a 72 year old having a girlfriend. I struggle to wrap my head around old people dating.

And yeah, she really didn't think this through. Why is prison any better than a home?

Nursing homes are apparently a hot bed of STDs. Large proliferation of lube, accessibility of viagra,no need to concern yourself with possibility of children and free time are a hell of a combination.

RIP son.

This seems like it's going to become a big problem in the future with a huge population of seniors.
Zero or limited consequence crime. People joke about seniors stealing batteries. . .

Throw in Alzheimers, bad backs, poor eyesight, alcohol

This is a strange story that you'd sort expect when you walk in to see No Country or Three Billboards.

Her son was 72 and she's 92 so she basically had him since she was 19/20. She also tried to kill the 57 year old girlfriend first with the revolver which the girlfriend managed to knock out of her hands and then with a pistol left to her by her late husband which was also knocked out of her hands. All of this began with an argument over her being difficult to live with which prompted her to kill him and choose jail over assisted living. This wasn't due to the one argument and her statement makes it seem like she pretty much resented him having been born perhaps?

My grandma had a boyfriend before the dementia set it. They're people man. People want companionship.

I hadn't even considered old people having sex.

Nah, I get that. It's just I always think that by that point they've either found their life partner or their partner died and they don't want to go through the motions again.

I think they realize at that age that the relationship is fleeting and they've made peace with it.

That certainly makes sense.

What's the alternative?
That's why I said not everyone has a choice. Personally, I'd take my parents in my home. Get a home health aid. Nursing homes sound incredibly lonely. Yes there are other seniors, but relationships take time to develop. And if 30 year olds complain about the difficulty of making friends, what about 80 year old folks?

we don't know the full story about their relationship.

Was the son a benevolent son or was a he moocher? The story doesn't dig deep into it.

we don't know

Home health care. There are programs that can help you get hospital beds, lifts, and other equipment as well as help pay for nurses, doctors, and aides to come helpcare for an elderly family member. My mother worked in nursing homes for 16 years. She saw the half decent privately owned ones and the hell hole corporate owned ones. When my grandmother had her stroke, my mom was like hell no and got to work setting things up to care for her. Grandma got to have a nice quality of life her last few years in her own home surrounded by family that loved her. If you have the option, and admittedly it can be very stressful at times, I recommend it over a nursing home wholeheartedly.

How exactly would a son "mooch" off of a 90-year-old woman?
My uncle stole my grandma’s social security and pawned a lot of her shit, so like that maybe?

Just saying that’s how young people mooch off old people, not that this guy did anything wrong. Seems like they had a fraught relationship.

User warned: Inappropriate joke.
Lots of people here are forgetting that she got something better than an old age home and even better than staying in her own house: Sweet revenge.

My great grandma was married for 40 years, her first husband (my biological great grandpa, who I unfortunately never got to know) passed away when they were in their 70s. She ended up remarrying someone she went to church with and was with her 2nd husband (who has always been the only great grandpa I've ever had) until she passed away a couple years ago in her late 90s (he's still around). The elderly are still people.

I would be totally cool with a nursing home in my last years. It'd give me time to go through my Steam backlog. Nursing homes are going to be one big LAN party by the time we get older.

My father's 71, he's still going around travelling to other countries, having a nice time. It's really not that old nowadays. Definitively not to old to date.
