Do I need to play Valkyria Chronicles 1, 2, or 3 before I play Valkyria Chronicles 4?

Not at all. Each Valkyria Chronicles game is almost entirely standalone. There are usually callbacks to the previous games in the form of cameo character appearances or newspaper articles, but there is nothing that would actively impede your enjoyment of VC4. Even VC2 which is a direct sequel to VC1 story-wise was an extremely standalone title, and there is nothing to suggest that VC4 will be anything different.

Will this game have the same balance problems as the original?

While the game still awards money and experience based on how fast you complete mission objectives, the issue of rushing objectives via overpowered orders has been largely mitigated through the use of special objectives and enemy placements.

Is there DLC?

Overall, there are six DLC scenarios available for download at varying prices, with two of them being included in - but not limited to - the Memoirs of Battle special edition. In order of release, the available DLC is:
  1. Tank Decals - Available at Launch for Free
    • The Tank Decals available at launch include: Gallian Crest, Cherub, Bakery, Cygnus, and Royal Flush.
  2. Squad E, to the Beach! - Available October 9th, 2018 for $6.99
    • September, 1935 EC. After a narrow victory, Squad E is given a special assignment: Cut off one of the Empire's critical supply lines. But when Claude's squadron storms the enemy's base, they unexpectedly find themselves standing on a pristine sandy beach... This story can be played after completing Chapter 10 of the main story. Complete this extra story to unlock swimsuit uniforms for Claude, Riley, Raz, Kai, and Minerva. To access this story, go to Book Mode > Menu > Extra Stories
  3. A Captainless Squad - Available October 23rd, 2018 for $4.99
    • Winter, 1935 EC. Squad E, traveling now aboard the snow cruiser Centurion, notices one day that rescue dog Ragnarok has gone missing. Feeling guilty for neglecting him, members of Squad E sneak out to find the lost pup. Before long, though, they find themselves embroiled in a "picnic" of a decidedly unpastoral nature... This story can be played after completing Chapter 10 of the main story. To access this story, go to Book Mode > Menu > Extra Stories.
  4. Expert Level Skirmishes - Available November 6th, 2018 for $4.99
    • A desperate plea for help has come from the war-ravaged front lines, and Squad E has answered the call for reinforcements. Six different battlefields, each one a bleak struggle for survival—could it be that the elite Squad E has finally met its match? This mission can be played after completing Chapter 18 of the main story. To access this mission, go to Book Mode > Menu > Extra Stories.
  5. The Two Valkyria - Available November 20th, 2018 for $4.99
    • 1933 EC. Behind the Empire's towering facade, Crymaria awaits a crucial test with Lieutenant Colonel Selvaria Bles. This cataclysmic reunion of the two Valkyria will determine Crymaria's fate. This story can be played after completing Chapter 18 of the main story. Complete this extra story to unlock Crymaria, Nikola, Chiara, and Selvaria for use in the main game, along with swimsuit uniforms for each. To access this story, go to Book Mode > Menu > Extra Stories.
  6. Edy's Advance Ops - Available December 4th, 2018 for $3.99 - Included in the Special Edition.
    • A special mission that gives you a weapon useful in the early part of the main game. Additionally, if you complete it, you will also get Edy from the original Valkyria Chronicles as a playable character! This mission can be played after unlocking the Headquarters in Chapter 2 of the main story. To access this mission, go to Book Mode > Menu > Extra Stories.
  7. A United Front with Squad 7 - Available December 18th, 2018 for $5.99 - Included in the Special Edition.
    • This story features an encounter with Squad 7, the heroes of the original Valkyria Chronicles. After playing through this extra story, you will get the characters Welkin (in the tank Edelweiss), Alicia, Isara, Largo, and Rosie for use in the main game. This story can be played after unlocking the Headquarters in Chapter 2 of the main story. To access this story, go to Book Mode > Menu > Extra Stories.
If I like [Game X], will I like Valkyria Chronicles?

Check out our Features section below for a description of the game and its charms. VC as a series is very unique, but people who enjoy X-COM and Fire Emblem will definitely feel comfortable with VC4's turn-based tactical combat.

How long is it?

According to the reviews, it will take roughly 40-50 hours to complete, but more for completionists. The scenario and number of battles is much larger than VC1.

Is there NG+?

There is no NG+ but you can replay any mission at any time, unlike in Valkyria Chronicles 1.

BicSovy.png

The Valkyria Chronicles series is set on a continent called Europa similar to the real world's Europe around the time of World War I. Following the Industrial Revolution in the 18th Century, demand for the mineral Ragnite skyrocketed due to its usefulness in everything from fuel to military weaponry to medicine, leading to escalating conflict between Europas two major powers, the Atlantic Federation in the west and the East Europan Imperial Alliance in the east. The year is 1935, and for the second time in recent history, the two powers enter full scale conflict.

While Valkyria Chronicles 1 details the story of Squad 7 of the small independent country of Gallia's militia as the Empire invaded the country for control of its Ragnite deposits, Valkyria Chronicles 4 tells the tale of Federation Squad E. Three months after the start of the war, the Federation is losing to the advances of the Empire's relentless attacks and superior numbers. Plans are made for a desperate counter attack against the Empire's capital city: Operation Northern Cross. Commander Claude Wallace, who led Squad E to an early yet bitterly fought victory over the Empire, is chosen with his squad to undertake this mission. Meanwhile, whispers of Valkyria, ancient people said to have been able to fully harness the powers of Ragnite, appearing on the side of the Empire have created an all new source of worry for the Federation's soldiers.

Okay, but why should I buy Valkyria Chronicles 4?

Valkyria Chronicles is a turn-based strategy RPG with semi-real-time action gameplay. Choose units to command or issue orders from a bird's eye tactical view, then take direct control, and hop right into the action. Fans of Fire Emblem and X-Com that always wished they could take that critical shot themselves should give this game a closer look. If that doesn't convince you, there's also:

Six Unit Classes

The original five character classes make their return: the highly mobile Scout, the stalwart Shock Troopers, the anti-tank Lancers, the long range Snipers, and the highly supportive Engineers. Joining them is the new Grenadier class which boasts long range heavy artillery for shelling fortified enemy positions. Units level up together as a class allowing you to make sure that that all of your units don't fall behind.
Vehicles

Tanks make their return, now costing fewer Command Points to encourage their use, and returning from the sequels are APCs that can be used to quickly ferry your troops across the larger battlefields while providing a modicum of armored cover.
Brave System

When a unit is near death, they may - if you're lucky - activate the special "Brave" state. When activated, the unit can either "Entrust" their duties to an ally to recover 1 CP and buff a nearby ally or "Stand Up" once more, gaining one turn of invulnerability and 1 AP for an attack before falling on the battlefield and needing to be rescued.
Lovable Cast

Get to know an all new diverse cast of over 50 characters that's returned to the grounded roots of the original game rather than the anime high school or heightened shenanigans of the sequels. Each character has their own unique set of strengths and weaknesses based on their background and personality and all have their own side missions to learn more about them and unlock their full potential!
CANVAS Engine

The CANVAS Engine is back with all new weather, dust and particle effects all in the series' signature watercolor inspired anime aesthetic. Fight through roaring dust storms, blazing fiery hellscapes, frigid blizzards and ice-sheets, and war-torn battlefields as you experience the wonder of playing a moving watercolor painting.
And More!

Valkyria Chronicles 4 also includes:
  • New tracks from original series composer Hitoshi Sakimoto.
  • Larger and more dynamic battlefields for bigger battles and grander strategies.
  • Finally, it also has a medic dog in a hat.
    • It's a dog...
      • ... wearing a hat...
        • ...that rescues your downed soldiers!

Thanks for the OT! My PS4 version should be in by Wednesday, but I'm playing Dragon Quest right now. I'll join the fun soon

I had forgotten this was releasing until I got a shipping notification last Friday. Might take a bit for me to play VC4 but I'm looking forward to it; the game already seems to be in the running for "best dog" going off the OP.

Was excited to jump into the English version immediately, but it's $99.95 AU on PSN ($72.60 US) after not being available for pre-order >.< It's weird, because Sega is usually pretty good about their pricing here (Yakuza 2 was $77.95 for instance).

Oh well, have platinumed the JP version already. Placed a physical purchase for a much saner price, and will just put up with waiting for delivery. Meanwhile, y'all enjoy what is a fab game.

I'm really hyped to play this game!

Sadly I'm pretty busy at this moment and maybe I'll finish DQ XI and finish Spiderman before starting Valkyria.

Cancelled my special edition but still plan on picking up the standard, heard good things. Hopefully I've done enough of the demo to get the bonuses out of it. I'd like to delete it from my switch.

What are the demo bonuses? I don't feel like finishing the demo since I want to start over fresh.

I played the demo and i love fire emblem.

Something don't work for me here. It's SLOOOOOOOOW.... each time you go back to map and need to select your unit before going back in 3D. Maybe i miss something but using a turn to move each unit it's ...slow.

FE is more speed .

If it helps, there is a setting in the options menu (second page) that lets you set enemy turns to "Fast". I highly recommend turning this on.

There's some weapons I believe you can get early as well as some accessories and tank decals but I'm not sure if those are all in the a main game anyway or not.

The only demo exclusive bonus is an accessory from importing your demo save into the full game. I'm not sure if you have to finish the demo to get it. Everything else can be obtained in the full game. PC players can't even get the demo exclusive accessory as far as I can tell.

I am on the fence about buying this. I love Fire Emblem but when the first game came out I didn't play much of it. I am tempted on waiting for the release of VC1 on Switch and playing it again before jumping on this one. I want to say when I got the first one on PS3 it was around the time of another big release and that may be why I didn't give it a chance.

Edit: Yup, I checked 2008 releases and it came out around GTA 4 and MGS 4. So that is probably why I didn't give it a release chance.

Picking up the special edition tomorrow. The demo got me hooked. I haven't played a VC game since the first one on PS3, but this seems like the perfect time to jump back in.

I've saved the demo till now so I can transition smoothly to the main game instead of the month wait. Really like the randomness introduced with negative perks.

Still not sure which version I'll keep. I have both SEs preordered but the switch has a bunch of visual issues I personally can't ignore. (But also gives a discount on handheld VC1 and feels better to play which is super weird to me.)

Do you get a discount with a physical version of the game? I am still having trouble deciding between PS4 and Switch myself.

Yeah, you get $5 off as long as you get it for Switch - specifics, such as how its redeemed aren't out yet but I assume it applies to both physical and digital.

I'll get this as soon as I finish Spider-Man's main story.

Also, I'm glad it got a 86 on Metacritic for PS4!

This series needs good press.

Anyone know of any good analysis into what's different about the Switch version from PS4 or PS4 Pro?

Ended up ordering the PC digital and PS4 CE...I've gotten away from buying CEs for the most part...but I needed to have one for this as I'm still in shock it even exists...I'm not even gonna play the PS4 copy, but ah well.

Note that the PC version has been confirmed to support 4k resolution, ultrawide aspect ratios, and uncapped framerate.
(The latter was something I was worried about, and which was confirmed by a developer on the Steam forums)

Can't wait!

I just got the game in the mail. Installing now on my PS4 Pro.

Why is the physical version of this game so cheap? All the console versions are only €40 around here. I thought this was a "full priced" game. It's €60 on PSN and Steam.

Oooooh, I may get this on PC then. Was leaning heavy towards Switch but uncapped framerate is a major bonus.

reviews look nice

shame that the game still has overpowered orders

the real problem of the first game was not the ranking system or the scouts per se, but that you could completely nullify the drawback of scouts with overpowered defensive boost orders

Playing through the first one I didn't know scout rushing was a thing and hardly every used orders and had a perfectly fun time of it so ::shrug:: I'll probably try the same here.

Era squad, I am so so so excited for this game! I wish the season pass was available for purchase on Steam though. I have the money for it and it is a lot easier to just buy it outright so I can get all the DLC.

Still not sure whether I'll be there day 1. Labyrinth of Refrain is also a candidate, while Octopath, Shining Resonance and Battle Chasers are still waiting for me to play them. But the demo was pretty great and I'm quite thirsty for some SRPG.

The other issue I have is that I'm digital only so far on Switch, yet the game can be found for around 45€ over here retail while being 60€ on the eShop. That's quite the difference at release... Definitely makes me reconsider the idea of buying this digitally.

Darn, cannot make my mind up.

VC4 was way under my radar because I read impressions from the JPN release that it wasn't very good.

So I went into the demo with any hype and it was soooo good and I couldn't understand why it was badly received until I went and saw metacritic scores above 80s.

I pre-ordered the Switch version the next day. Can't wait to play it!
