Entrevista Harvey Smith, creador de Deus Ex y Dishonored

Hablamos con este veterano diseñador, creador de juegos tan míticos como Deus Ex o Dishonored.

The interview is in Spanish, so excuse the Google Translate quotes below.

On the future of A.I.
For you, the decisions of the players are important and I have the feeling that artificial intelligence has been a hindrance in developing games that convey that feeling of freedom. Do you think that new platforms like Stadia, in which there are no such technical limits on the ability of AI, will open new paths for freedom in video games?

You mean if cloud computing means we'll have better AI or something? Hmm, I think that would be nice, but these eyes have to see it. Raph told me about his new game,Weird westand it said that, speaking with the programmers of the previous cycle of consoles, it asked: "How many characters can we have on screen at once?" and they would answer: "five" and then the next generation would come, which was more powerful and all that and the question was: "can we now have 1,000?", "no, five", "how that five again?" . Well, because now you can pretend that the characters listen, that if a glass breaks somewhere, they can hear it, not that they run to where you are and attack you, but go to the place where something has been heard and investigate the area . That makes the player feel more part of the game, doesn't it?
The scenarios are cooler, the animations too, the modeling is more detailed, the player, the weapons…. Everything is more detailed. And all that adds up and in the end you end up with only five characters on the screen. I have high hopes but we will see. If what you want is to have a great artificial intelligence, you have to consider that this is the basis of your project, a responsive AI, and then you have to lower the bar on everything else, graphically, the size of the game, you have to lower everything.

We've talked about cloud gaming before with Stadia or Luna, but what can we expect from PS5 or Xbox Series X | S?
A new cycle of consoles is always exciting.

How many characters will we have on screen?

LOL. Five. What they can do is, you know, pull the trigger and feel that haptic pressure, that's a great thing. They will connect you more than ever with your friends, the graphic quality is also a little better, or a lot. Of course the PC is always a bit ahead, but it's another console cycle, it's exciting.

On his involvement on Deathloop
You worked at Dishonored at Arkane Lyon and now you're at Arkane Austin, so you're not working at Deathloop .

No, Dinga Bakaba [game director] and Sébastien Mitton [art director] are with him, but I worked with them on Dishonored 1 from Austin. We collaborated between Lyon and Austin for the first Dishonored and then for Dishonored 2 I moved to Lyon and was there for four years. Raph stayed in Austin and worked at Prey with Ricardo Bare and Susan Kath and the people I'm working with now. At the end of Dishonored 2 I went back to Austin. I'm not in Deathloop , I'm in something else, working with the guys who made Dishonored and Prey

Would you like to be working on Deathloop ?
I think it would be very exciting. I have played a fairly early version of the game and now I am hoping to play a more advanced one and give you some feedback but the spirit of those guys, their dedication to the gameplay and player movements, to art, to scenery… I think it's going to be something fascinating to watch.

On the Microsoft Buyout
Now that Microsoft has bought Bethesda, have you noticed any changes in the study?

I think the process is still unfolding, I can't say much about it because I don't know much either. I would say there has been no change at Arkane so far, but if I were to imagine the ideal partner, thinking of all the publishers and the people I know who work for them, it would be very, very difficult to find a better partner for Bethesda than Microsoft. They fit perfectly.

Arkane is such a talented dev and I can't wait to see how their future projects benefit from this acquisition.

Love him, one of my favorite people in game design. Also, totally buried the lede here, he was one of the designers on the original Deus Ex, and in my opinion, one of the reasons that game's levels were so damn good. Warren Specter gets so much praise but when you look at what both him and Harvey Smith went on to create, I think it becomes more clear what each brought to the project.

Was it previously confirmed that Arkane had a second project in development? Very excited for whatever Harvey and team and working on. Also excited to play Deathloop, and see what it's actually about.

Dishonored is on pause people. I for one am glad. I didnt play more than 5 hours of the sequel. I loved the first one. Guess the main loop just couldnt click with me anymore.

Id like Prey 2 but I kinda hope they are working on a new IP as well.

Can't wait to see what it is. Dishonored, Prey or new IP.

Hoping Deathloop continues the great run they've been on.

Deathloop does nothing for me for that snippet about being on something with the people who made Dishonored and Prey...oh lord. Prey is so damn good.

Arkane has two studios.
Lyon and Austin

They both worked on Dishonored, after that they splitter:
Austin made Prey
Lyon made Dishonored 2 and Death of the Outsider.

Austin is working on a new title while Lyon is finishing Deathloop.

Arkane is so good. I'm not the biggest fan of how their games feel mechanically, but their level design is second to none.

Thank god the immersive sim genre still has this dude making things, utterly brilliant designer. I'm down for whatever he's working on.

I'm not very optimistic but I really want a sequel to Prey 2017 at some point. This game was amazing and I loved the believable sci-fi world.

The founder of of the studio leaved it for a reason, but maybe the recent acquisition could give it another impulse.

Arkane are probably a top 5 studio in the industry. Excited for Deathloop next year and whatever the Austin team is cooking.

No more Dishonored. Those were 3 wonderful games but the story is comprehensively done. With their track record I'd be happy with whatever worlds they come up wth next

Whether his next project is Dishonored, Prey or something else, I'm there. This guy only makes bangers.

The world of Dishonored is far bigger than Corvo, Emily, or any of their associates, and this sentiment is apparently shared by Arkane itself: the two-and-a-half existing games collectively encompass what it calls the "Kaldwin era".

Personally, I'd love a prequel featuring one of the handful of female Royal Protectors that Dunwall has had throughout its history, as established in the original game.

Don't think Smith was involved in Prey but nonetheless interested in what they do next as a studio.

In my headcanon, Microsoft bought Bethesda just to make damn sure the most interesting developer in the business keeps making games.

Love you, Arkane!

Wow, Harvey Smith is not working on Death Loop but on another Arkane project? That's news to me! Can't wait to learn more.
Also, what on earth was this question:

Lol

I want a game in Pandyssia. Change up the genre though since the setting doesn't fit normal Dishonored mechanics.

Learning that he's working on something with the same team/s behind Dishonored and Prey has me very excited! Loved both of those games and definitely want to see more in those franchises, but something new would be great too.

I'd like to hear more about this if you have info. This must have passed me by when it happened.

Dishonored 1 & 2 and Prey were all great. Haven't played Death of the Outsider yet.

Former Arkane boss on why he left triple-A: 'You're not making a game anymore, you're making a product'

Arkane founder Raphael Colantonio talks Weird West, immersive sims, and why he doesn't want to go back to big budgets.
I tought it was interesting to remind regarding his previous role. So while I am sure they will keep the DNA of what Arkane is known for, maybe not in the evident direction we are excepting (for me Deathloop is already an iteration of that legacy, so it can be for the best).

When you are the head of a AAA studio, the amount of time you spend doing business and executive glad handing and publisher blockading increases proportionally to the size of the team you head until you basically have no time to do actual development and designing.

He wanted to be able to be more hands on with his games again.
