This thread is for very original video game character designs that definitely weren't nicked from anywhere else.

Here's a few I had in mind:

Jazz Jackrabbit and Bucky' O'Hare:

The Machine (Turrican series) and Galactus (Marvel comics):

Supposedly, Solid Snake is not a ripoff of Snake Plissken according to Hideo Kojima, but it's up to you if you believe that.

Ridley Scott and Ridley (Metroid). It's like Nintendo didn't even TRY to make them look different.

I mean, originally sure, the character in MG1 and MG2 has almost no personality. But by MGS1 he's clearly full on Snake Plissken, and then in MGS2 he uses Plissken as an alias. So yeah, the character at inception wasn't but the modern portrayal of the character absolutely is.

Having recently gotten into the Anime and Manga, Yojiro Hanma (aka "Ogre") from the Grappler Baki series proves that Capcom plagarized the shit out of him with Akuma.

-Both have red hair

-Both are obsessed with fighting strong opponents

-Both "groom" the main character from their respective series to grow stronger so that one day they can have an epic battle against them

-Both have a "demon" motiff

-Both have a trademark pose where they show their back to the camera

-Both typically like to battle opponents to the death

-They even have similar moves, such as the dive kick

You could apply this to nearly every classic Street Fighter character. Capcom gave no shits and pretty much cribbed from all sorts of sources (JoJo, Battle Angel Alita, Fist of the North Star, Doomed Megopolis, etc).

Fei Long from Street Fighter is just Bruce Lee. If I remember right the developers even said as much at one point.

Naughty Dog will/should be listed a few times here, but the Metal Gear cover is kind of pathetic:

In a historical context, I can understand the blatant lifting of poses.

This sort of artwork had short deadlines, low pay, and to add insult to injury, the company kept the physical paintings. Not exactly a prime gig.

Also, Suda 51 has gone on record citing Johnny Knoxville as some inspiration for Travis Touchdown (among a million other things, because No More Heroes is postmodern as fuck).

Final Fantasy XIII's Serah is very similar to a character from a very popular hentai.

Not gonna post pics for obvious reasons.

Lee Rekka from Last Blade is Jet Lee as the Chinese folk hero Wong Fei Hung in the Once Upon a Time in China movies. He even goes to America in his ending, just like Wong Fei Hung does in Once Upon a Time in China and America. He also has Wong Fei Hung's signature No Shadow Kick.

So curious to note, and it's kinda the opposite but figured I'd mention this.

Mint from Threads of Fate (Dew Prism), would ultimately serve to be used as the basis of of Asuna from Negima.

What happened reportedly was as follows (provided I'm not misremembering anything). Originally Ken Akamatsu was supposed to work on a manga adaptation of Dew Prism (his younger brother had been involved with the game, along with a couple other Square Enix games at the time), but reasons unclear, the project was scrapped. Aspects of his design works and stuff would end up being re-worked into the Negima! manga, including Asuna's looks and personalities likely being based off of what he intended to do for his adaptation of Mint.

My guess is originally Dew Prism was supposed to be a bigger multi-media project for Square Soft but a lot of plans fell through for various reasons. The deal with Kingdom Hearts could've been one of the things that killed it, honestly. But who knows.
