Remember that viral video of the former NASA engineer who got sick and tired of people stealing his packages? He built an impressively high-tech glitter bomb to prank the thieves and even lent the sneaky invention to friends so they could do the same. Well, it turns out that some of the video was faked by his friends. And the creator, Mark Rober, has apologized for the deception.

To be clear, two of the reactions were faked by someone else, and MArk later found out and removed the footage. I don't know the channel very well but that makes Mark look a lot better.

You mean that lady who shouted at a glitter bomb in the privacy of her own home and threw it in the trash for the owner of said bomb to rummage through her trash and retrieve it later was acting?

I'm shocked

As soon as he said they would auto update to the cloud to get the video off before they discover their are 4 500 dollar phones inside it, I suspended by belief. That shit would have been broken and beaten instantly. Some of those reactions we're way too mild while others I believed.

Wonder if I am alone at feeling dirty for laughing at this now. Some of the reactions from the black “thieves” seem stereotypical at best and racist at worst, in retrospect.

And also the part where literally every "package thief" was a POC...prank video culture is so steeped in racism.
I mean... they weren't though?

The internet strikes again (and simultaneously demonstrates how you have very little privacy if someone wants to go digging.)

I bought it initially, the fact that they got through that many people without losing it (I guess you could assume the last guy in his bedroom kept it because he didn't freak out) certainly made it more unlikely. Definitely a perfect example of being the lie you want to believe though.

I was thinking on first viewing why would a guy risk retaliation or having four snazzy smart phones getting stolen, obviously a tad less risky using friends :p

Still a great video and loved the one where he explained the design and production that went into it. He should patent that spinny mechanism and sell it to some kitsch mall retailer like Brookstone, people would definitely buy something like that.

I would’ve thought it was fake but I actually gave it the benefit of a doubt because the uploaded was that NASA guy, now I’ll never trust again.

Why would you just... make up a lie like that? Literally the first dude is white. Baffling.

EDIT:
Well you're gonna fake shit, guess you don't need meet as subscriber. Jackass.
I mean, besides the fact that they don't, the guy (in his apology) really doesn't come across as a jackass tbh. Seems like an overreaction, and I mean, we all know that package thieves exist and the machine works.

He's blaming the people he paid? Yea okay. Shit looked fake as fuck to begin with. Why would anyone stealing a package not steal the damn package full of cell phones and remove the sim cards?

Well, the guy claims only those two were faked and that’s why he removed them. And those two people were black.

The phones weren't visible though, the thieves throwing it out is incredibly believable in the scenarios in the video.
Eh. I don't know. Shit don't smell right. Just the way he's explaining shit is fishy blaming some unknown people that he paid. I have no reason to believe him after he passed this shit off as completely real.

I'm not sure I follow what you're trying to say, or how that changes things, sorry

Well, that kinda boils down to "I don't believe he was lied to, so he must be lying".
I agree that it's plausible that it's all BS and he just got caught, but a scenario where other people fake footage without his knowledge isn't exactly impossible either.

I feel the first post should at least make it clear that he himself was, alledgedly, deceived.
