At this point, Virginia is going to be governed by some random intern.

AP said:
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Another top Virginia Democrat has admitted to wearing blackface decades ago. Attorney General Mark Herring issued a statement Wednesday saying he wore brown makeup and a wig in 1980 to look like a black rapper during a party as an undergraduate at the University of Virginia.

The revelation further roils the top levels of Virginia government. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax are already facing controversies, and Herring would be next in line to be governor after those two men.

At this rate, we're going to discover that every Democrat in Virginia has dressed up in blackface at some point. Disgusting.

So we basically win in 2017 with it looking like we will basically take VA away from the GOP and their gerrymandering and NOW we might not bee able to see the fruits of our labors???

Fucking kidding me?

4th in line for governorship if the Lt Gov does end up having issues and the AG bows out is the speaker of the house. A Republican. I assume they let the Lt Gov take over and appoint another dem if he does have sexual assault issues fully surface to stop it.

Wonder what rapper he was trying to dress as in 1980. Someone in the Sugar Hill Gang? I don't even think Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five was a thing by then

Edit: Never mind it was Kurtis Blow

search might work better if they just flip it and ask if anyone in the state has not worn blackface before.

Not a good look, obviously, but...

“In 1980, when I was a 19-year-old undergraduate in college, some friends suggested we attend a party dressed like rappers we listened to at the time, like Kurtis Blow, and perform a song,” Herring said in a statement. “It sounds ridiculous even now writing it. But because of our ignorance and glib attitudes – and because we did not have an appreciation for the experiences and perspectives of others – we dressed up and put on wigs and brown makeup.”

This is WAY different, imo, than posing for a picture next to someone in a KKK hood (or being the person in the KKK hood).

What was the point in admitting to this? Was there evidence forthcoming that he was hoping to get out in front of?

Worse yet, it's the very same Republican who got office via that tied vote where he won the fishbowl pull...

New Yawk City!
If there is any consolation into this, it’s that the attorney general was pretty open about how fucking stupid and awful that was. And that consolation will be a pretty cold dish. That’s a really low standard, but with so few people meeting it (Northam trying to moonwalk, Fairfax literally going for “fuck that bitch” in a private meeting over the accusations last night), I wonder if he’s the one who can actually survive this.

This whole thing is a MESS

Even if you leave out the part where people think Fairfax leaked the pic to ice Northram
And then Northram/the mayor allegedly did the same on him but with the sexual assault allegations

I have to say that it's disheartening that this was almost forty years ago yet will be inevitably be used to spin a "both sides" narrative when drawing comparisons in a purple state against a party that is happily running racist ads and instituting racist policies in the present day.

Infuriating, really.

This is just stupid, tragic and hilarious. I didn't knew Virginia was that widely backwards.

Unless there is photographic evidence I think he should have remained silent, as shitty as that sounds.

I mean, probably. Clearly knives are out in terms of all of the OPPO research getting dumped.

This was the straight ticket I voted for. How embarrassing. I know they were running against Neo-Confederate Corey Stewart's Republican Ticket but Virginia should have much better options.

Owning up to one’s past without anyone asking you to and still doing it with a better dignified response is much better than current governors contradicting responses on getting caught

So...is he technically second or third in line? I believe second is correct since the Lt. Governor would be first in line...right?

I'm seeing outlets use both.

Well, dehumanizing black people is an ingrained part of their culture. We were kinda fucking baffled with Megan Kelly was talking about how blackface was such a regular fun and acceptable thing for people like her growing up.

At least his statement had a lot more self reflection than murder crusader Liam Neesan.

So given the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and now AG all seem like shitty people, the person below the AG in the gubernatorial pecking order must be partly thrilled and partly sweating.
