Virginia Newspaper prints FULL, UNREDACTED KKK ad as part of a newsstory

A Virginia newspaper has come under fire from its readers after it ran a Ku Klux Klan recruitment flyer in full on its front page.

The Westmoreland News ran a story on how KKK recruitment flyers and DVDs had started appearing in the town of Colonial Beach, Virginia.

However, the paper decided to include a copy of the recruitment flyer, which included racist and anti-Semitic language, in full on the front page to illustrate its story.

“They posted the whole flyer as if they were giving them free advertising,” Colonial Beach resident Betty Tate Thompson told WTVR. “It even had the number on flyer to contact the head of the KKK. Which I thought was totally ridiculous.”

Must be a top notch newspaper.

“She explained that she wanted to put it in to show people that those of us in Colonial Beach who may think there’s not racism…I think she didn’t expect for this to blow up the way it did,” Plott said.
What a weird sentence, it's breaking my brain.

It's a good thing to want to prove racism is alive and well, something a good amount of America absolutely denies (or agrees but feels it's really against them).

But I'm not sure how this mistake can be made, it seems pretty obvious. You don't prove racism is a problem by giving racism a bigger platform. I mean at least edit out the phone number for Pete's sake. Black folks aren't just going to assume you have the best intentions when you're spreading racist materials.

It's time for another good idea, bad idea.

Good idea: reporting on racism still present in the United States

Bad idea: reporting on racism still present in the United States... by printing KKK flyers in full

If it was my local paper I was going to go down there for real!

This is legit free advertising, what in the hell were the newspaper staff thinking?!

Clickbait op. I thought the newspaper actually took money from the KKK and ran an ad.

This looks bad but not that bad.

Why didn't they remove all the phone numbers and websites at the very least?
Hmm.

Yeah, you are right. Would have been a story if they took the organizations money and then put the KKK ad in full on the homepage. Thankfully though they displayed the ad in full on the front page for free.

Close one.

It seems like they meant well but were completely asleep at the wheel. Even if they had buried it under the fold or where the story was continued on the next page. Yeesh.

Oh I thought they were actually supporting the KKK. Clickbait title.

On the one hand, some people are so ignorant they think racism is dead and hopefully this kicks them right in the stomach and makes them do something beneficial culturally.

On the other hand, some people are racist and will consider joining, they will be given support to do racist things because they know there are others who they can find community with.

Overall, I think it is good to get the awareness out that there are assholes in your community. If people are interested in joining they have probably already looked it up on the internet. It would have been prudent to not give contact info, but who knows, maybe people will contact them and show them the bigger community doesn't support their hate. I'm not sure that censorship is the best course of action given the freedom of information we already take for granted. Maybe showing the contact info will be the evidence some people need to really shake them out of their apathy, that without it those same people would have waved it off as fake.

We do not need to provide Era users or the internet with the KKK's contact information. Do not post the uncensored ad again.

I'm guessing that the KKK is getting a lot of prank calls right now so maybe it isn't a complete disaster.

Damn that would be scary to have flyers like that show up in my town. Even scarier still to have my local newspaper signal boost it like that, holy shit.

Adjusted the thread title to accurately represent what happened. The KKK didn't buy an ad in the paper, the paper printed an un-redacted KKK ad as part of a story they were doing.

Ehhhh I’m kinda split on this. On one hand, I can see where people think it’s free kkk promotion.
On the other hand, in the actual context of the story on the physical paper, it looks more of a “this shit is happening in our town, be aware that people in this town are openly promoting and distributing flyers like this.” It’s the news providing an uncensored local reality. There are people out there who downplay racism and organizations like the KKK are a thing of the past. This story provides a wake up call.

i mean i get why it was dumb but where racist people really waiting for an ad in the new paper to join the KKK, they should still remove the number but i think there doing more good then bad.

Huge difference between putting up an ad and displaying it as part of a story. It’s essentially the same as showing Nazi propaganda in its unedited form for educational purposes, not in support of it.

So it's an article about a "disturbing package" that residence got; the article clearly is critiical of the KKK and pointing out how fucked up the whole thing is. Maybe blur out the contact info on the ad of course but the intent seems to be pretty obvious to me.

There might be a difference between this and historical educational pieces with Nazi propaganda though. I don't know. You tell me.

Don't Newspapers edit out contact information like names and numbers anyway as part of journalism ethics? Or like protection against getting sued? That's a big ooops to make.
