It's also the first time they haven't waited until business hours in jp to release a game on Steam.
Usually they release during business hours so they are around to takr care of stuff in case.
I'm pretty sure Steins;Gate Elite/LBP was released at around 6pm in the UK on Steam, as Darling's Embrace just was? I got LBP free at the time due to a pricing/bundle error.

Finally booted my Vita copy of Fata Morgana and honestly really bummed by the audio compression. I get that it's a lot to cram onto one Vita cartridge though.

Guess I'll just hack through the PS4 version (which has great audio quality) to unlock the ability to get at Reincarnation.
Is this the digital version too?

I haven't launched my digital copy yet, and was torn between PS4 or Vita.

The price seems a little too high, but it has a ridiculous amount of content. Like, how long are the two titles combined? More than 100 hours? Holy shit

I don't know about you, but I find it really difficult to pick up a VN once I stopped playing it for a while -- especially the types with bad ends and a true ending. I just end up spending at least an hour reading up on what happened earlier in the route and during other routes to get my bearings again.

usually if I have to stop reading a VN for whnatevere reasons (usually time contrains) I end up starting it from the beginning again because I tend to forget stuff about the plot.

post about the cuts made to the game https://sekaiproject.com/blogs/news/baldr-sky-changes
there is supposedly a restoration patch being worked on that will come out within days, whether by the original fan translator or on the downlow by the official translation team or even a collaboration between both, it's hard to tell lol

To provide an accurate gauge on the amount of content the skipped sex scenes works out to, the count is that in the main story 3680 out of the total 87877 lines of the script are removed, amounting to about 4% of the game's lines.

Holy shit, that's a lot of porn

I often play a VN alongside with a game of another genre (particularly if the VN is on the PC, since that means it will take me longer, while when it is on Switch I often play it alonte until I finish). But in my case I don't find difficult to re-enter a stopped VN. Even though I could have the sensation to have forgotten everything, as soon as I read some lineas I start to remember (my memory works this way also in other fields, not only for games).

In the meantime, I started The Fruit of Grisaia. I am currently in the common route (in July, so I think I am near the first character route). It is quite long, I have already played it for more than 10 hours, and particularly episodic, it is clearly not the VN I would suggest to someone as their first VN. However, all the five main girls are amazing and all the episodes convey some feelings (fun most of all, but some moire serious theme which I suppose will become relevant later have already been touch, like death). Now I am looking forward to playing the five routes, I think I will follow the natural order in which they are presented: Makina, Amane, Sachi, Chiruchiru Michiru, Yumiko. I read online so many different suggestions about the route orders, so I think I will just go for the traditional one.

Thoughts on Steins;Gate Elite? It looks interesting and it's now on sale on the Nintendo eShop so I'm thinking of picking it up.

Did you play the original game? If so, it is almost the same game, with only some removed content (which is related however to secondary routes and does not have a big impact, particularly if you don't know what it is), with the anime scenes instead of the original graphics.
If you didn't play the original game, however, I think it is up to you. If you prefer playing VNs on Switch, you should go with Elite. If you consider the possibility to play it on the PC; Steam has often sales for the original Steins;Gate version. But in any case, if you didn't play it, you should do it, in a form or the other. It is the best VN in my opinion.

Busy playing Sakura Wars lately so I did not step into this thread, and now I discover Baldr Sky is out.

Man, having so much IRL stuff has so drained me, I had completely forgotten about the fact that the sequel to fucking Umineko came out 2 months ago and I didn't even read it

How is Root Letter Last Answer? It's on sale right now.
I for some reason loved it. It's a pretty great example of virtual tourism with a simple yet grounded story (except for some of the Last Answer endings) and has very lightweight point & click adventure gameplay in it. I've read in an interview that the game was meant to make Matsue (where Root Letter takes place) more attractive for tourists and I think it does that well.

Did you play with the new visuals? They look a little corny.

Just completed my first playthrough of Gahkthun of the Golden Lightning. Took me about 27 hours. I mostly let the voice-acting play itself out, but sometimes read at my own pace when I felt the dialogue was starting to meander.

I really enjoyed it.
  • The steampunk setting and art was fantastic, probably among the best I've seen. Colors were vibrant; characters were well designed; and the world felt lived in. Proportions for 1 character felt off though, but that's really all I noticed.
  • Prose and translation quality were both high. I had to bust out a dictionary which I hadn't done in a while.
  • Story was straightforward and episodic. I'm not really a fan of episodic stories, because I want to see continuity and a recurring cast of characters. Gahkthun has a core cast that appears in all chapters, but there are some really cool characters that feature in their own chapter and then sort of disappear.
  • I don't think choices had a big impact on the story. At least, not in the way of other series like FSN where it would lead to completely different routes. That's fine by me, because I'm totally okay with kinetic VNs. That being said, you do get rewarded with extra scenes/small vignettes if you made the right choice.
  • It sticks the landing (i.e. ending), which imho, is a tricky thing to do. It leaves me feeling all warm and fuzzy.

I kinda felt a bit sad when it ended because I wanted to see more of the main 2 characters (which is testament to the fact that I enjoyed it quite a bit). I heard there were 2 light novel sequels, but I can't read moon runes so I probably won't get to explore this world further any time soon.

tl;dr 8.5/10

Can one of you explain Umineko to me? I'm on Episode 2 and I don't really understand what is happening.
I've played Higurashi and in that game the different episodes were all....
alternate universes that Rika had to go through in order to obtain her and everyone's happy ending
But what's the case for this game? So far Episode 2 seems to be a different retelling of Episode 1 with deaths happening in different orders and in different ways but is it an alternate universe like Higurashi? It's confusing because I thought Battler wanted to prove his family's innocence regarding the first episode but now all the situations are different so what exactly is he arguing? Please feel free to spoil because while I enjoy the theatrics of all this it's hard to really engage with it when I don't really understand it.

It's a little hard for me to answer because it's been such a long time since I read it, and I forget what's covered in each episode or if I'll word things in a way that's 100% correct for where you are. I think you will get a better understanding of it if you just continue, but I can try to give some basic help now; others should feel free to correct me, though.

Generally speaking, I think it'd help if you thought about it as...
What is possible to have happened. If the goal is to prove their innocence, that can't just be that they didn't do it in one theory for what happened on the island. It needs to be proven such that alternative theories of what happened don't line up with the things that have been established as objectively true. Does that help?

Additionally, the wording the game uses it is more or less that the "meta layer" characters are playing a game with the characters as their pieces.

Well, it is intended that it shouldn't be clear to you yet what is the context behind each chapter's story, it's part of the narrative behind the question arcs - but it WILL be clear during the question arcs, unlike in Higurashi where it was part of the question. You mention Higurashi's context, but in Higurashi the true nature of the episodic structure was also confusing until chapter 7 where things were finally laid out (heck, it wasn't even clear that the episodic retelling was part of the mystery until Rika referenced past episodes' events!).

Same as before, all of the different universes have the same context and the story is about figuring out that context from the shared variables. To find those shared variables you have to solve each episode's "local" mysteries... at least, that's what was expected of the reader in Higurashi, right?

But this time, unlike Higurashi, there are a "meta" Battler and Beatrice that give their own commentary on the events, doing that same job for you. Think of them as separate to the "game piece" Battler, and as something that doesn't have an equivalent to Higurashi (and - as characters whose nature you may or may not want to figure out yourself before the story reveals it to you), or rather, the equivalent was the reader himself.

So if the game took (what was in Higurashi) your job from you in the meta layer, what is the reader supposed to do in Umineko? For one, meta Battler isn't really fulfilling this job very well, so it's up to you to fill in the holes for him. There's something else beyond that, about the meta layer itself, but it's somewhat controversial (I didn't like it myself) and will start getting clearer during the question arcs. I was more or less satisfied just thinking along the meta layer like I did in Higurashi but you're free to go beyond that and think about the meta layer itself, especially during the answer arcs.

I'll just say that in Higurashi I kinda skipped the after-episode meta discussions because I didn't like the hints and 4th wall breaking, but in Umineko it's 100% required to read both the tea party and ??? party before the next chapter every time.
