What game currently even needs this outside elder ring and Insomniacs games with the 40fps mode. Preety much all the ps5 games I've played have stable 60fps.

Horizon Forbidden West has a clear problem with IQ on performance mode, it has stable 60fps but all in all it's the roughest performance mode I've seen lately. I hope it will hugely benefit from VRR support with a dedicated mode closer to resolution's IQ.

I second this. I haven't bothered to play this as I was waiting for them to either add a 40fps mode(unlikely then but perhaps now) or a patch to clean up the performance mode which didn't happen.

Resident Evil Village in Ray Tracing mode
Deathloop I’m quality mode
GTAV in performance ray tracing mode
Both Spider Man games drop frames in 60FPS mode
Crysis

There’s lots of titles that will benefit from this.

There is some games that have "120FPS" modes that in some scenes drop a few Frames like Warzone f.e. Those benefit heavily from VRR

Surprised GT7 and HZD aren't on the list, you'd think it would've been a priority

I heard GT7 can get framey when driving in rain with multiple cars on screen? If that’s the case it would go a long way into cleaning that up.
GT7 has incredibly rock solid 60FPS, only few frames are dropped at race starts in heavy storm weather in custom race mode. And those few drops are ironed out after few corners.

But nothing stops users to toggle VRR for all titles... As for removal of 60fps lock, I don't expect that from Polyphony.

Ghostwire Tokyo
Deathloop
RE Village
DMCV SE
etc

There are tons of games that have drops when in high framerate mode. This will help loads.

DIRT 5 is already updated, so once your PS5s get their console updates you can toggle VRR right away 🙂

It also supports 120fps (has since launch) so try that out if you haven't already.

I'd really wish they clarified the difference between VRR support via a game specific patch and the system wide toggle. As it is I am not sure what to expect of the system wide toggle VRR feature. If only patched games end up working properly and let's be real, most devs won't bother patching their old games, this could lead to a situation where their VRR implementation ends up mostly useless for old games.

so what day can we expect it? When do they usually update?

Some people on B3D have the update

forum.beyond3d.com

Playstation 5 [PS5] [Release November 12 2020]

Indeed, I've just tried pushing my triggers down by placing the controller in weird ways on the desk and knee with little success. Potentially you...

I have the update working now. Only supports 48-120. So no unlocked frame rates for 40fps modes in insomniac games. But the performance modes do hit 70-80 fps. It's pretty great. Dirt 5 is buttery smooth now.

:(

Why not 40? There are unlocked framerate games like Elden Ring that drop into the 40s.

VRR is up, it's a back-end update and not a firmware update, just turn on your PS5 connect it to Internet and wait a bit for it to show up.
Just tried Ghostwire Tokyo and it runs perfectly with VRR now, i can't notice any framerate drops.

Can you check whether it works for BC PS4 games as well? Well, not easy to test as most of them run at a smooth 60fps anyways.

I got VRR. There wasn't an update. I think the last major firmware already had this and was just enabled on the backend.

Yep, seeing the options in the video settings page, cool. Hope someone can provide Elden Ring feedback, since I just uninstalled the game yesterday.

Cool to hear about Ghostwire, is that on the performance mode or quality?

TV is an LG C1. I toggled even for unsupported games. VRR does not work with Horizon Forbidden West.

It'll probably benefit but since it drops below 48fps regularly (apparently the lower bound of PS5 VRR support) this is not gonna be the slam dunk people were hoping this to be.

I have samsungs Q90R with freesync premium 2. Seems to be working!
Maybe it also has the hdmi 2.1 VRR standard implementation but the TV doesn't make the distinction.
Anyway, I'm a quite thrilled over this now. Someone a few pages back said it wouldn't be compatible.

As far as I can tell, it seems to run A LOT better. There's some areas where still has some trouble but it's like night and day.

Samsung Q90R is TV from 2020, I really doubt it has HDMI 2.1

Rtings says it has "HDMI Forum VRR" support.

PS4 games don't get VRR, i just tried Dark Souls Remastered and YS 9.
Gran Turismo 7's PS5 SKU also doesn't get VRR but Ghostwire does so i don't know what's happening.

I just tested Modern Warfare 120Hz.

VRR is not supported. I guess this doesn't work with PS4 games.

VRR works with GTAV.

VRR works with Control RT mode. It doesn't look like its performing any better. Maybe because RT mode is a smooth 30fps already.

VRR doesn't force 120Hz.

Okay, here we go. Screw leg day I’m testing all my games. I’ll update as I go and if anyone wants to know about a specific title let me know.

So far:

Elden Ring PS5 version:

Very quick test but performance mode now feels smooth. Quality mode still feels awful. It’s different to the Xbox in that it seems to take VRR a second to kick in after a load and you can see some stutters for a brief moment, but then it activates and is smooth.

Elden Ring performance mode runs smoother for sure

Didn't test with quality as I'm not interested in that mode

Performance mode actually has utility now. While swinging you can see anywhere from 70-105fps

This is really transformative for Ratchet as well. 40fps feels great but 80-90 is pure butter

Exactly why we need a pro console for higher unlocked fps :p

I have a Samsung QN90A, PS5 is plugged on the HDMI 2.1 port, when a game has VRR when you launch the game the screen goes black for a few second to activate the feature and the input switches to "3840x2160 VRR".

Yep, that's basically telling you that the connected source is sending out a VRR signal.

Deathloop:

Quality mode - noticeable drops and stutters. VRR doesn’t seem to go as low as Xbox and any drops under 50FPS are noticeable, so this mode doesn’t feel smooth at all

Ray Tracing mode - In the settings claims to be locked to 30 but with VRR feels a smooth 60FPS. Only tested out in an open area so might drop in combat, but much smoother than quality mode

Ultra Performance mode - aims for 120FPS but has drops and doesn’t feel smooth. Can still see small stutters in the opening area.

Looks like VRR might make ray tracing mode a viable option but I’d have to test a few stress test areas first.

Elden Ring PS4 version -

The latest patch must have fixed an early stress test here because I can’t get it to drop any frames. Anyone know a good stress test area for the PS4 version on PS5?
