Oh, I don't disagree one bit. Every fanbase has their complete assholes. It just seems extremely prevalent in the gaming community online.
I would add a line at the end of every patchnote for the game:
- Waluigi not added
I dunno, whatever is going on in the Star Wars fandom right now seems a lot worse than a developer receiving stale memes on Twitter.

I'd say it's more trolls/memes in general seeming more prevalent through the internet. Plus, Trump being president helps normalize the behavior of being an asshole.
This terribly unfunny meme has gone to far. Waluigi has always been a b-list guest character for Mario spin off games. The fact that people are harassing Sakurai for nothing but the inclusion of a video game character boggles my mind. It's fine to be bummed out that your most wanted didnt make it in, but to harass someone because of it? Absolutely absurd.
I feel like so many times throughout a year it's embarrassing being lumped with the same group of people who do dumb shit like this.
I imagine that would actually please most of them since they would think about how great it is that they were capable of ruining something for certain people.

But if there's one thing I have noticed among Reddit users is they can beat a dead horse like nobody else. They're still crying about EA to this day trying to score cheap upvotes. I expect the Waluigi nonsense to continue for some time.
