WaPo: AOC to endorse Bernie Sanders for President

Behold, for I am here to deliver the only correct take on this development.

AOC’s (and The Squad’s at large) base already supports Bernie. None of them are running for national office any time soon. All this does is allow them to appeal to their base by remaining politically consistent while allowing them plenty of room to endorse the nominee in the general. This is politcking 101. Any other takes are dumb and partisan.

I honestly don’t care who gets the nom out of Sanders and Warren, they’d both make great picks. My only worry is that their battle will allow Biden to take the win. And Biden who struggles forming coherent sentences could definitely lose to Trump.

Not really. They dont work at all. And again, you're supporting AOC for the wrong reasons. They are literally the same person ideologically.
Ideology is not everything. I'm a hardline socialist but you wouldn't vote for ME for president, would you? I sure as hell wouldn't vote for myself.

Simply put, while I would like a person with Bernie's views in the White House, I don't think Bernie Sanders, the person, would make a good president.

I’m not upset she endorsed him I just don’t think he’s going to win.

I’d love it if he did win because I think his policy is great. But I don’t think he can.

It's *always* been about the optics of an old white man having more progressive street cred than other candidates. That's the reason for the visceral hatred some liberals on this forum have for Bernie.

Sanders can't claim the most progressive title until he takes active steps towards gun reform. This is a guy who helped give the gun industry special liability protection because guns. Can't see how a carve out like that is progressive. Why shouldn't gun manufacturers be treated equally under the law?

Why should Warren drop when she's going to win the nomination?
and Warren votes in support of plenty of pro US military bills and the infamous pentagon budget increase which inflicts just as much gun violence on innocent people every day. We can play this game all day.

Why are you being disingenuous about his stance on guns?

Also, the guy with a D rating from the NRA isnt suddenly not progressive. What a strange take.

I mean, he''ll take on the NRA, supported the bump stock ban, wants to end the gun show loophole, wants to expand background checks, wants to end the sale and distribution of assault weapons, and expand mental health care in the US, as well as supported legislation that would make it harder for domestic abusers to purchase guns, all of which are things that would help curb gun violence in the US.

Also Vermont is one of the laxest states in regards to gun control but has one of the lowest gun crime rates, with most of the gun crimes reported being suicides which his mental health care expansion would help offset.

well, most Democrats actually have an F.

But I think Sanders is good enough on gun reform, although he definitely isn’t the most anti-gun of the current candidates.

On the point of gun control: mandatory buybacks shouldn't become the purity test. Castro today made an excellent point about giving police the power to come knocking on your door being the last thing people of color should have to deal with right now.

I disagree with Sanders on both gun reform and the Filibuster. But he is absolutely the most progressive candidate running. Its objectively true

I don't think a lot of voters actually really care about gun control, at least enough to make it a priority on who they vote for. Maybe that will change when Zoomers get into power since their lives have been shaped by mass shootings much more than any other generation.

Omg the whole future of the fucking party is endorsing him!! This is what progress looks like. Some of yall hate Sanders so much you still refuse to see it, but it is happening.

Also I called this endorsement and melt down months ago. Just sayin. Stay predictable Era.

Oh shit! Didn't even realize that. Well, hopefully this helps boost him up a bit then.

I agree. It's important to point out Bernie has been softer on guns than other Dems. But it's important to remember unlike most of the candidates, he acknowledges a host of other problems beyond mere lip service, and unlike all of them, he actually understands what needs doing to fix them. This is especially true with how he's expounded upon other views he didn't touch in 2016.

Ironic post given Danny's been outspoken in support for Bernie lol.
Edit: beaten to the punch lol

This is a good point. When you say “only cops and the military should have guns” you’re effectively saying “only white supremacists should have guns.” Also how you gonna not pay for M4A but have a national buyback program?

I'd wager many AOC "fans" angry that she is endorsing the candidate with the views closest to hers probably was only using AOC as a prop for being a young women of color.
It's not that insidious. A lot of people in that grouping treat her like a pop star or a little kid where they like for the "enthusiasm."

They never saw or treated her like a real politician.

Speaking only for myself, I would rather have her as President (when she's old enough to legally do the job, obviously) than Bernie.

He voted (multiple times) against the Brady Bill, he still supports the PLCAA (which was a NRA priority and carved out special protections for the industry), and he consistently voted against funding for research into firearm injuries until he launched his first bid in 2105.

He also blames gun violence almost entirely on "mental health" issues.

No he doesn't have a perfect score from the NRA, but the NRA certainly doesn't hate him.

Anyone who follows gun issues knows that Bernie may be economically progressive, but he's noticeably to the right of the other candidates when it comes to gun reform.

I prefer Sanders over her for the nomination, so yes I don’t want her to win. Thanks
That's different than wanting her to drop out because you're afraid she'll win. :)

I'm happy to have Bernie stay in the race until the convention in they same way I'm happy to have Biden stay in. Neither is a threat to Warren and she's not attacking them or their respective bases.

Good for him, and her / them. If this propels Bernie to the nomination, great. He'd make a fine president, and may very well bring enough enthusiasm on his coattails to take the Senate, and get some shit done.

If it doesn't get him the nod, though, I don't like the thought of the Squad's supporters potentially adding numbers to the "Bernie or Bust" crowd. In our political reality, it takes only the smallest of numbers, in the right place(s), to propel Trump to another EC victory. And those places will be getting hammered with Russian trolls encouraging that Bust mentality.

They really needed to do this so I"m glad they are. There are fundamental differences between Bernie and Warren and while I like Warren, Bernie aligns far more with the DSA.
